View Full Version : BEER! Cause natty light doesn't always cut it!
I have an obsession with trying as many different kinds of beer as I possibly can, and not in the sense of drinking till I fall down. I worked in the industry as a second job (and some times only job) for over a decade and a half from the bottom to the top. I spent a few years under the tutelage of a great owner that taught me lots. Shift drinks were a requirement  not an option. I learned a lot and lost count when I went over 2000 (known) different types of beer tried.
I don't slam 12 packs or cases anymore, my liver hates me because of those days, but when I do drink beer I go for 2 or 3 high quality beers.
This isn't the thread where I ask "your headed in to the woods for six weeks , you can only take 8 beers.........."
So other then the normal stuff what do you like?
What food pairings go with it?
Local or foreign?

I just recently has some Brau Weisse that truly pleased my palate. It went great with some bangers and mash from my local Sherlock's Pub and Grill. It also allowed me to teach this hot little waitress some German. :inlove:

Local brew, Weemac Scottich Ale, and Sunlight Cream Ale(silver medalist at world beer cup)! Both brewed by SunKing Brewing Company here in Indy.
I am a full on beer snob, so the term "normal stuff" I imagin means things like Bud, miller, coors....
and not since 1998 have i touched any of those.
In no order:
gritty Mcduffs
gary's
Flying dog
harpoon
Dundee
Newcastle
Guinness
And this is by no means a complete list.
The hotter the weather the more I lean to IPAs and fire cooked meat, the fall is seasonal brew time, and winter its the thick stuff.
and now I think you talked me into buying some beer right now.
I also demand beer whenever working with concrete or cleaning guns...an odd habit, how or when it started I don't know.
Anthony

Guinness.
In the UK, the local draught bitters.
Brazilian beer is good. Pilsen generally, and served very cold due to the heat here most of the year.
The best IMHO, are Boemia, Antarctica 'Original' and Cerpa. Brahma Special is fine also.
I don't know if you can find these up there?
I have drunk many American beers also.
They vary from 'ok' to fine.

Anthony.

I think Eric Pfleger is our staff Beer meister. There was some brew I tried in a bar in Prague, Czech Republic two years ago that was very nice. I will see if I can find the name.

get away from "american beers" and try the local micro beers, and you will find at least some that are far, far more than "fine."
-RDog
Also I'll add if in russia go for the "охота" Russian beer is not anything to write home about, and this one is a bit malty...but it packs a punch.
at this moment I am enjoying a "long trail IPA"
there are better IPAs but its not bad.

Hey RDog....(tongue-in-cheek) you don't really need beer like that at all do you....but you want it. After all....Budweiser is beer and if you needed it, you could make do with that right? You see the want with beer but not with other things in life?
Open your horizons.
Just because one man cannot afford the best beer does not mean the best beer is not better that Budweiser.

This subject came up in class at lunch. Wegmans and the beer section. How it was easy to walk out with a $60.00 six pack that has some of the finest brews on the planet. We also discussed how life was too short to drink crappy scotch or bourbon.

Lately it's been Magic Hat No. 9 Pale and Wacko summer seasonal, New Holland Mad Hatter IPA and Black Hatter black IPA(hard to find out of season, but the best beer I've had). Also a Bell's Amber or Round Barn Amber and Stout will find its way in the fridge. Blacksmiths are always fair game too, which is a Black and Tan but instead of Bass you use Smithwicks. I would also like more Beamish Stout, best Irish stout ever, but Heneken bought them and stopped exportation for the brew. That's what's on the summer list.

If you're in Central Kentucky "Kentucky Burbon Barrel Ale" is always good. It's a 7oz pour if that gives you any indication, and tastes great with steak, fish, or anything else. Just my personal opinion.

Lagunitas IPA or a good barley wine and mead hits the spot for me. However while grilling with the buds on the weekend, sometimes a cold, cheap 'Merican beer couldn't taste better. I've been living in Germany for the past 18 months, and have missed my local micro brews from the west coast. One gets sick of the monotony of pilsner and heffeweize.

For a long time I was a big fan of Leinenkugel's Berry Weis... Blue Moon's Harvest Pumpkin Ale's pretty interesting, Real Ale Fireman's #4 or Guiness when I'm in the mood for something a little stronger. Of course, just about the safest place in the world for a beer is in my fridge- I tend to drink when I go out or with family, not so much at home these days...

One of the best I've had is Three Floyds Brewing based in Indiana.
Bell's is also very good.
Franziskaner is amazing (although, I enjoy a good wheat, some don't)
I enjoy most Oktoberfest (Marzen style) brews. Favorites are from Paulaner and Sam Adams
If you ever visit Pittsburgh, be sure to go to the Church Brew Works. Fantastic food and beer with a unique experience.
Some pretty good tastes here!
It's interesting to see how far the micro-brewed company's have made it.
For all you guys talking about Bells, Stone brewing, Lagunitas, the list goes on......
I got the chance to meet all those guys when they were first starting out when they'd come talk about there beers. All of them were good folks with a dream that weren't satisfied with the regular beer that they had. There was a want, not a need for these beers. Yet there company's became successful because the want was so great. As Gabe said it is WANT not need that Americans have learned to capitalize on. Yes some business' make money off of need.....but very few.
I too want to open my own restaurant/bar and can truly say that all of my customers would be there for want, not need.
captbeach-next time I'm down in the DC metro area I'll meet up with you and take you to some bars that will blow your mind form there beer list.

Never did develop a taste for the US style micro-brews...
I like an occasional Guinness (preferably as a "Black 'n Tan" with Boddingtons) or a Newcastle Brown, but the Pilsener style beers (lager) have always been my favorite: Czech Pilsner Urquell and Budvar (the original Budweiser, but they can't use that name anymore since selling to Anheuser-Busch), next in line German Warsteiner, and from up North, good old Flensburger, still sold with the old-fashioned hinged pop-top bottle!

From southern Germany, and rarely found on the menu or taps outside that region, Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu. Very crisp, clean taste, apparently due to the Black Forest water source they use.

Wow, I was starting to think I was the only one that knew about the PNW craft brew scene! Life is SO good up here. My fav's...
-Black Butte Porter (Deschutes)...chocolate cake in a glass with a bit of a bite.
-Drop Top Amber (Widmer Bro's)...BEST BEER EVER with grilled meats. Don't know why, don't really care. Heaven.
-Summer Citra Blonde (Widmer Bro's)...crisp citrusy flavor, but not over-bittered. My hot day hero.
-1554 (New Belgium, Ft. Collins, CO)...smooth, easy dark beer. Best brewery tour EVER, btw. Go.
-Skinny Dip Summer Seasonal (New Belgium)...replaced this year with Somersault. Bring back Skinny Dip, plz. :crying:
-Private Reserve Classic NW Lager (Henry Weinhard)..what Bud, Coors, et al wishes they could be.
-Terminator Stout (McMenamins)...Chocolaty like Black Butte but smoother & a hair stronger. Probably my fav of all.
-KGB Russian Imperial Stout (Widmer)...not my pick to drink a lot of, but even an amateur like me can tell this is an incredibly well crafted brew. If RIS is your thing you gotta try it.
The best all around brewery I know of is a guy that goes to my church. Masterful home brewer who takes care of his pastor.

Left-hand Brewery Sawtooth Ale. Colorado has plenty of good choices however, more micro breweries than anywhere else in the world. It's hard to choose some times. If you can find it, Coors Batch 19, its a prohibition era recipe they started brewing recently. As for food, we have a bar here that serves an elk burger with sauteed onions and Bacon. You have a potentially good area in MN...not a lot of competition for craft brewing, like there is in the PNW. But then again, midwest taste buds aren't generally the most sophisticated either (lived there '05-'08). For some people ketchup is too spicy...and I wish I was kidding. I've done a lot of research into it, and crunched some numbers, and the biggest hurdle for us (isn't it always?) is start up capital. We need quite a bit for facilities, cover costs for a year (or two), permits, etc.
Haha, craft brews are actually quite popular here, now. You'll have your swill-drinking masses everywhere, but there are a lot of people here who appreciate a craft or home brew. I have a few connections here to take care of distributing and marketing, so it's still the capital.

Never had shiner 101, but if it's anything like Shiner Bock, I won't like it. Tastes like liquid iron.

Tastes like water with way too much iron in it. Water from a well. Rusty.
Believe me, I'd never say this down in Texas: I want to keep all my teeth. :biglaugh:

Other dudes and their chicks will down their light beers all night (bud, miller, etc) But that crap is just flavored water as far as I'm concerned. I start at Shiner and Sammy A and then go up.

Is a beer called something like Tusky, Old Tusky, or White Tusk still available there.
It had a pic of a large elephant with huge tusks on the label. This was 1974 so it may have even been Kenya. Sigh getting old. LOL
Not sure, as I haven't actually been to Ethiopia (it was at an Ethiopian restaurant in L.A. that I discovered St. George's Beer).

I dont go in for the micro brew stuff. There is alot of it around here and I dont drink enough beer to get into all the different varieties.
We have a no alchohol while you carry law here in TN so I basically cannot drink a beer out in public since I am always armed. Therefore I have learned to do without or just drink the occasional bottle at home. I usually dont drink anything at all unless I know I am in for the night and am ready to de-gear self.

We rode the motorcycles up to Herman today to check out the Octoberfest in German country. Had a Stag beer with my sandwich at a dive bar...does that count?

Kilkenny is amazing, but nearly impossible to find; but I really enjoy Wexford Irish Creme as well. Rochefort is easily my favorite of the Trappist variety.
Had a fantastic local brewed stout yesterday (Boulder Dam Ale), powerful espresso and chocolate - YUM!

Yeungling (USA's ldest brewery)
Killians (generic, but good)
Solera Verde (Venezuela)

When I want a DARK beer, I go with Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. Or Murphy's. I likes a Murphy's.
For my more regular drinking, I tend to favor Hefewiezens and Witbiers. Maisel's Weisse and pretty much anything from Weihenstephaner. My preferred domestics tend toward Blue Moon, Shock Top, and a lot of the Sam Adam's craft beers.
For the days when the currency is sparse, or I'm buying beer for a LOT of people, PBR works just fine.

Queensland XXXX and Victoria Bitter Drunk at the Australian Embassy in DC some 30+ years ago. They brought in in under their diplomatic pouch because they were not going to drink that "...cheap crap they make for export."

I've got a few different brews in my fridge at the moment...
Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve NW Lager,
1554 (New Belgium),
Black Butte Porter (Deschutes)
Okto (Widmer)
Mirror Pond Pale Ale (Deschutes)
I really like them all, though I'm favoring Black Butte over 1554 quite a bit. But I find myself happiest when I look toward the back and find just one more Mirror Pond. Malty, toasty, rich...amazing on its own or next to a nice piece of meat.

This past weekend my dad and I were drinking Guinness Black Lager and Sam Adams Winter Lager. That Black Lager was excellent and Winter Lager is an old favorite.
I just recently tried North Coast Brewing's "Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout" it is amazing, and definitely a "Big Boy Beer" at 9% alcohol.

Not just the alcohol content...the potency of the flavor profile of Russian Imperial stouts reaches up outta the glass and punches you in the face. Hard. Old Rasputin is a 7 or 8-time gold medal winner. A truly magnificent brew...if you've got the palette to accept the challenge.

Hmm, that's a tall order. I'm a pretty big beer fan. Boulevard Wheat is one of my favorite go-to's. Also Smithwicks, Tsing Tao, Fat Tire, Dos Equis Special Lager, Paulaner. I suppose the Boulevard would also count as a hefeweizen like Paulaner, and I've pretty much enjoyed every one of those I've tried.

I'll try anything. And, I gave up remembering them all a while ago.
My best biking buddy during college also owned a bar (he was significantly older than me BTW) and he stocked every microbrew he could get his hands on. Greatest bar ever!
Even so my favorites list isn't all that odd i dont think.
1. Stella Artois (even named my dog Stella)
2. Yeungling (I'm from PA)
3. Dundee Honey Brown (I like it, and the wife will drink it)
4. Great Lakes Brewery, Edmund Fitzgerald (no reason, its just good)
5. Stone Brewing Arrogant Bastard (None of my friends will ever steal it outta my fridge)
