View Full Version : Serpa as a Rig Holster

I was thinking about how to secure (as in not fall out) of the Jeep I'm getting in a few days. Usually my truck gun just lives in the center console of my Explorer but since the Jeeps console seems to be farther back I'm thinking about mounting a holster "somewhere" close to hand for those times.
I know the Serpa isn't the best holster for carrying a firearm but I'm thinking something like the lock might be a nice feature for this application.
Thoughts?

I'm thinking one of the holsters that are sold on OST would be a better choice. A well made Kydex holster that locks the gun in will keep it mounted where ever you choose to mount it. Less motor skills to draw from a Kydex and more mounting options where placement of the button on the Serpa would limit mounting places.

I know that on here the Serpa is not well thought of, I carry in one 5 days a week. I have never had any problems with mine. If thats what you want to put in your jeep go for it.

The SERPA would be a great choice from the standpoint that there is a noticeable click when the weapon is inserted and locked into place. Another good aspect is the mounting hardware that is included with the holster, as opposed to simply a belt-slide or belt clip.

What I'm thinking is Fobus makes a holster with an attachment for a car mount and Serpa is a step up from Fobus. While I am a huge fan of Dale's rigs, I don't think any of his would really lend themselves to being mounted under the dash or between seats.

Where would you mount it? Im dealing with the same issue. Im not sure the Serpa is the best (especially if youre not used to it); but its worlds above the Fobus. Is there a reason a cheaper nylon holster (perhaps with a thumb snap) couldnt be used and perhaps velcro'd to the carpet?

Will it be possible for gravel to fly into your jeep? If so, DONT use a Serpa...

I doubt gravel will fly into the Jeep but I know what your saying.
As for where to mount it, I was thinking under the dash maybe or under the seat. Still not sure yet.

Buy a locking steel security center console from Tuffy Products, and mount a cheapo nylon holster inside it.

Carrying it and drawing it under pressure are different. I've seen people in classes and a few in matches that didnt like the fact that they brought one after the day was over. Pushing that button equates to fine motor skill and it will fail under stress...much like forgetting to click off a manual safety. Saw a guy do that about three times in a match last week...and thats just match pressure....not real-life attack pressure. Better to have fewer things to fiddle with when it gets serious.
Carrying off body mounted in a truck is different though. If securing the gun and not having it go flopping into the floor is paramount then some sort of retention would be in order. I'd be more likely to just get something like one of dales and tighten down the tension screws. It wouldnt be locked in but it would be held tightly.

What kind of Jeep are we talking about? A Cherokee? If so, you are correct that the center console is too far back for quick or stealthy access. Ideal place for a pistol would be in the cup holder area just behind the shifter. Maybe fabricate a custom insert for the cup holders that can house a pistol?
As for using the Serpa (or any other holster for that matter), I just don't see any good place to attach it in a Cherokee:
1) That is immediately within reach of the driver
AND
2) That is not in plain sight
Maybe you will figure a way to do it that works for you.
Another possible solution...
If you are left handed or comfortable enough shooting lefty, then you could remove the speaker from the driver side door, modify the space for a small pistol, and use the speaker cover for concealment.
Just an idea.
