John, What is that tire size again? I know you've said it before, but I can't remember.
I had a 83 Suburban that was able to fit 35's with only 4 inches of suspension lift.
Also, I assume you've swapped out the 10 bolt rear to a 14?

The last few years it's been sitting in the garage waiting for me to have time to finish the dual Toyota transfer cases.

My car . . . bought it 3 years ago when I was in college, she had 72K back then, now at 107 . . . a tune up and some new tires and she's ran without incident since. . . I painted the calipers red since this photo . . I did some paint on the engine area, and put in a K&N CAI, its just 3.8 V6 but she goes to 120 mph pretty fast for a 4 door sedan.
You all got some nice vehicles. . .

Im a big A-body guy. That ones the 68 Dart, Now working on a lightweight 73 Swinger with a pissed off small block to abuse, waiting to get going on a Duster with 5.7 hemi for a road car. Here are a couple of my 2006 F350. I need to get updated pictures since I chaged the head light out for Harely Davidson black head lights instead of the chrome and I added a set of Auto Meter Z series gauges to monitor EGT's, Trans temp, and boost. I have aslo put a MBRP Off Road turbo back exhaust on it with muffler and cat delete as well as an River City Diesel EGR delete kit one. Next up are some custom tunes from Innovative Diesel to make her get up and go a littler better.
The day she came home from the dealer.

My wife drives a Commander with the 4.7L V-8 and it is a good rig, but trail rated, my ass. I tried to take it down the trail to the cabin once and got stuck once on the way in, and once on the way out. I know they make a good all-around rig when modded a little, but it's the daily driver for a school teacher, so the 2-3 times we take it out to the cabin, we just park it and walk the third of a mile in or ride my 3 wheeler. I really wish I could have the engine out of it to put in my TJ... What winch mount did you use? I've been kicking myself for not buying one of those "Get Lost" winch bumpers for ours before the guy building them threw in the towel on his business.

You can do a lot with a 2wd rig, well driven. Been there and done it, and it probably made a better driver out of me, but it isn't something that I'd do by choice anymore. The nice thing about 2wd is that you can only get it just so stuck short of running it off the road into a ditch.

I agree, I took it in the woods and snow but not in big mud holes. I have thought about adding a locker to the rear end, 2wd's with lockers can go just about anywhere a 4wd without lockers can. Since I paid so little for the truck I hesitate to spend much money on it.

Netpackrat; I'll post another pic tomorrow when its light out, i made a custom winch mount from some old roll cage tubing i had laying around my shop. Cost me no money and about 6 hours of my time. Theres some nice aftermarket bumpers out there but theres no way i would pay $1500 for a bumper.
Completely stock the thing would get stuck in 2 inches of snow. With the 3 inches of lift and aggressive tires it is unstoppable. Ive had it in water and mud almost up to the door handles and driven through 3 feet of snow in downtown buffalo pulling out 4wd plow trucks during out last big storm. With the mickey thompson tires its the most capable 4x4 i've ever owned.

Cherokees are pretty good all around vehicles to start with. Minor modifications can make them very capable. I used to use it more to the extent it's modified but these days I don't get to. Still not bad to drive, but if I was to get another one I'd just go with minimal lift and 31" tires.

This is what I am considering as well. Seems the cherokees are pretty good vehicles (despite my father in laws being a piece of crap). I want an older one and small lift and 31's. Do you have the stock engine in it?? Did you do anything to the engine?? How much are these going for right now??

I have *a* stock engine in it. When I bought it (pretty darn cheap), it had about 180k miles on it. At about 200k miles it developed a light knock in the bottom end. After trying a few things, I decided it was probably a wrist pin in one of the pistons (I think this is a common problem in the 4.0L engines). I decided to just get a low mileage engine and replace the old one. I don't fault the engine or the vehicle, because I knew this one was a crapshoot and when I found certain things early on I realized it was abused. It didn't even have a thermostat in it when I got it, and it ran in open loop most of the time as a result (who knows how long it was driven like that...not good). I know several people with Cherokees across the year range using the 4.0L engine, and they've all been pretty reliable. I'll hop in mine and drive anywhere with no worries.
I don't know what the market is like on these right now. I paid $900 for mine almost four years ago, but I also put quite a bit more into it afterwards (plus blood, sweat, and tears). If you're not the mechanical type, I'd recommend trying to find one that seems well taken care of even though it will obviously cost you more. Also, make sure you get one with the 4.0L inline six engine and the AW4 transmission.

Completely stripped, no options, cheap. I ran it up and down the twisty mountain road here a few times, and even keeping within the breakin rev guidelines, it's really a lot of fun, it's so small that you feel like you have a whole track to work with. I hate to admit, but more fun on roads like that than some of the much more capable cars I have, which have 3-4x the horsepower and better brakes/suspension.
Plus the wife can use it for groceries now, and my daughter can drive it in a couple more years and I won't whine if she scratches it up, and she's less likely to kill herself in it than in some of the sillier cars.

Nice Fozzy! You would be shocked (well, maybe YOU won't be) how capable the Forester can be offroad even without 4-LO. You can get a couple of inches of lift and then can fit some small (I forget if they are 29" or 31") Swampers under a Fozzy or Outback. Good luck with it.

Thanks! I've already added skid plates and should be ordering a set of King Lift Springs next week. For tires, I've heard good things about the General Grabber AT2s and the Yokohama Geolander AT/S. The only "big" tire I know will fit without hitting the spring perches on the struts are the BFG AT in 215/70-16, which is a 27".

Not a lot but a good set of coilovers and upper control arms goes a long way. I still owe some more money to the bank or I would go beyond bolt on.
But, I love this truck. Easy to run 60mph on most any road that has been graded within a few years. Soaks up bumps and handles jumps.
On the highway I have no shortage of power for passing...mileage really sucks though. 14 is all I get highway or city.
It does get old when every kid with black socks and flat billed hats stop you to ask you "what kind of lift kit is that" but it comes with the territory...as do "so you do some rock crawling" and "why would you do that to a 2wd?" That and everyone that knows me or my truck, knows exactly where I am anytime I take it anywhere.
It is for sale now. As much fun as it is I want to go back to a stock 4x4 four door truck...

Thanks bro! That's another one I shouldn't have gotten rid of. 93 4.0, AX15 trans with a hand throttle for the rocks. Went through a few axles with that one, so I'm not sure what's under it in that pic... front axle is a HP 30, rear is either a Super 35 (4.56, 30 or 33spl alloys, Detroit, truss's... normally I wouldn't bother polishing a turd like that but it was free) or a 29spl 8.25. It was sitting on 4.5" coils and leafs, but it sat closer to 5". Coils were just stiff enough that I was actually pretty comfortable without a swayer on the road. IIRC, they were RE coils and RC leafs, but its been years since I got rid of it so I'm not 100% sure on that. Tires were 33" Firestone Destination MTs that a buddy set me up with (head mechanic at Firestone). Can't say enough good things about those tires... sticky on the rocks, good in the mud/sand/snow/ice/pavement, and studdable if needed, not to mention they wore like steel. Only problem is that they largest size they come in is either 33" or possibly 35", which is fine for moderate builds but I've since grown to "big boy" crawlers and have no use for rubbers that small.

How many pounds of boost does that Vortech supercharger make?
I think it's about 7 pounds atm. I didn't want to bother with the necessary cooling hacks to do more, and I had my doubts about the strength of the differential and tranny :-)

That's a slick car, bae. I'm not usually one for modern sports cars, but I love the stealth. Or at least, as stealthy as a bimmer can be. My dad was driving the MGA up in the mountains one time (he grew up in the Granite Falls area) and he encountered a Beetle that wanted to race. Said he concluded it must have had a Porsche engine swapped in as it rapidly shrunk in his windshield.

Small world! I had many a burger at Ike's drive-in and played all over out in those mountains behind Granite Falls growing up. We lived 10 minutes outside of Granite.

I think I went through 3 engines in 15 years in my '67 MGB trying to make it fast-but-classic :-)
Then I broke the chassis with the supercharged Rover engine idea :-( I should have stuck with powered-by-slow-tractor-engine-but-classic.
This Z3 really should have been an Austin-Healey 3000, but She Who Must Be Obeyed had issues with my back yard full of British parts cars...

You joke, but there were tractors powered by the BMC B-series engine. IIRC, there may even have been a diesel version. The last time my dad rebuilt the engine in the A back in the 60's the machine shop sleeved the bores back to standard using sleeves for a Massey Ferguson tractor.

This is where having a brother with an aircraft hangar can come in handy... We bought a '73 BGT project recently, which his girlfriend thinks is mine, and my wife probably won't find out about for months since she has no reason to visit the hangar and it's out of the way. :naughty:

Good looking 951! I had a 69 912 that I restored right after high school.... Foolishly I sold it a few years after. Man I miss that car!

I have been looking at 968s off and on this year. Wouldn't mind having one for a weekend fun car and occasional DE.

Outstanding! To me the 912 is the perfect high school car...teaches you all the right basics without enough horsepower to get you into serious trouble. A car to build a solid foundation of driving skills. They were out of my reach back then, so I drove an MG but the lessons were the same...smooth is fast.

The 914 was another great High School car. The mid engine gave it good balance, and it was not hot enough to get you into serious trouble horsepower- wise. The basics are best taught with a machine like this...rear wheel drive without enough engine to get yourself in over your head. The perception of speed is important at that stage in your driving life, and a low open car with squealing tires and a howling engine provides that in spades.

I couldn't agree more. That 912 and an E30 BMW 325e really taught me a lot about driving. Damn I wish I could go back to 1999.

Here's a 2008 Hummer H3 I built for a project that never came through since GM dropped the brand. The best part of this project is that I got to keep this truck for myself. it has a ton of goodies in it like IR lighting and run flat wheels. I use it for fundraising events that support and help out our troops. Rest of the time it's my daily driver. It's funny to see people's faces when you drive by or stop next to them. :D

Street Triple? I've been eye-humping a Triumph for a while, but I'm torn between one of the Triples, Tigers, or any of their cruisers. Keeping an eye out for one my bank account won't crucify me over.

Well, it would appear you have a vast majority of us beat... would need something with armor to top that I think.
BOY would I love to have IR headlights for running the fields at night looking for hogs!!!

Hi rifleman,
I just love those FJ's - I took a close look at one a couple of weeks ago and it was nice.
How do go with access to the second row seating with that small swing-out side door?
Street Triple? I've been eye-humping a Triumph for a while, but I'm torn between one of the Triples, Tigers, or any of their cruisers..
It's a 1200 Tiger Explorer, not a Street Triple. Triumph 2cyl cruisers are also sharply styled but not radically different from other cruisers on the market, except for the enormous (3cyl) Rocket, which certainly IS different.
Actually, this time of year, most dealerships have big sales, to unload inventory.

I slide the bucket seat forward in addition to opening the back door. Good tie-downs for the kid's seats in the back & the back seat bench comes out very easy for large cargo.

Anyone ride supermotos?
My next bike will be a street legal (must use some Jolly Roger mentality) cr450 with slicks and a headlight. It's the most fun you can have on two wheels. Plus, cops hate crotch rockets but the only time they pull you over on a supermoto is for intel. Everyone had a dirt bike once upon a time.

Back in the mid 90's I used to ride a street legal or at least street registered KDX200. It was a lot of fun and always got a second look when you would drop a gear next to some clown in traffic since you don't see many 2 strokes on the road. There are a few Supermotos running around here, but not many.
Yeah they are not very practical but the 4 strokes just scream for some street time. That being said there is still nothing better then a 2 stroke dirt bike. A buddy of mine is a surgeon that got to spend some time with some formula 1 drivers and he is a total gear head. He was ttold that the closest anyone will ever get to feeling what it is like to drive a f1 car is a two stroke dirt bike.

Next project for me......... is a garage full of cool bikes. I prefer Dual Purpose Adventure bikes..... like the R1200GS , Thriumph Tiger and a Tenere. Maybe a RR1200R for burning up pavement and an Indian Chief....... just because. Maybe a few older enduros. Like DT400, Hodaka and some other sillies in the mix for fun. What else should we be spending $$$ on?? ;-) Oh........ and some watches!!
I've ridden the gs. The tiger and the Tenere. I bought the Tenere and never looked back

My "new" vehicle. It's a '95 Orvis edition Grand Cherokee. I'm in MI currently. It has some quirks due to its age but the two previous owners are very serious car people and kept it in fantastic shape.

Here is my car as it currently sits. I have a decision to make that I'm wondering what my Bon Vivant brothers would do.
My car had 208 crank HP from the factory. That's the way it is currently.
It isn't enough HP for my taste. I have the old turbo engine from my wrecked 86(page 7 and 24) sitting on a stand in my garage. It is a 2.5 liter 8 valve engine. It put down 323 RWHP in the old car(around 400 crank HP). I could put it in my new car in a weekend. This path would be quick, easy, and inexpensive.
It was a lot of fun in the old car. It would be fun in the new car.
OTOH, the engine currently in my car is a 3 liter, 16 valve non-turbo engine. I could rebuild it with turbo pistons and could get around 500RWHP. I have friend in Las Vegas with this set up and he's getting 494RWHP. He was clocked in one of the Nevada open road events at 194 MPH.
This path would not be quick, easy, or cheap but it would be much more fun.

Now we're talkin'. Ford hit it out of the Park with the Raptor. They debuted it at just the right time and did a good job of putting together a nice truck that works well for a factory truck.
My ride is not near as blingy but it can eat bumps and holes all day long and takes big hits in stride.31866

Yep, when I first saw one on the lot I thought it was one of the best factory off road packages. I bought this one about 9 months later in 2010. Its the 6.2L which they added midyear into production. A bit pricey on gas but it hauls ass and loves deep sand and dirt.
