There are open slots at a company near me for exec protection - the ad mentioned nothing regarding qualifications or prior experience . . . I'm just a civilian, is this something I should even bother applying for?
I thought that most required past le/military experience

What is required is up to the company doing the hiring. It helps if you have some useful talents that are not common in the population at large. Being able to look clean and low key is a big plus. Most people underestimate how boring such jobs are.

What kind of skills would be handy?

Medical skills, like an EMT cert. Driving skills, like EVOC. Skills related to the particular business in question.
Uphill battle, but not an impossible one. Apply; what's the worst they'll do, other than saying "no"?

Or maybe say "go here and take this course".
Maybe just ask them what they would like to see?
Get ready for complete and total boredom, and stuck up clients that think your there to service them.

As a civilian Ive worked jobs as simple as escorting telephone techinians into the projects and while in the military I did close protection for a four star general. The one thing I can tell you that remains constant, standing in the rain with a MP5, is still standing in the rain. On the other hand, how often do you get to practice J turns in a Range Rover???
Its like the anesthesiologist said, the job is 95% boring and 5% shear adrenalin..........

I called them apparently you pay 250 to join an association (one time fee)
They mail you DVD's and you complete lessons online, then you get a certificate in protection theory (not sure how to feel bout that)
After that they apparently do some free training and then you can pick your assignments, high risk pays 6-8 hundred per day low risk is 4-5 hundred per day.
Is this a scam or is this worth pursuing? Anybody done anything like this?
They asked me if I had a felony, over 18, martial arts or military training. I said no, yes, and yes MMA. . . she said that would do but there would be a background check . . .any thoughts?

The fact you have to pay money up front makes me very skeptical...

I think it's a total scam. :thumbdn:
Any company teasing with that pay grade is not going to be working with candidates that just completed their "Official EP Certificate" training by mail. By comparison, a busy EP company like deBecker Associates starts it's guys off at about 54k a year. That's after a grueling multi-level interview and selection process, and then about 3 weeks in-house training, with most of the guys who make the grade having some prior experience in MIL, LE or private security.
Other companies I know hire experienced and vetted contractors at $25 - $35 per hr., for armed details on 8 - 12 hr. shifts, sometimes w. a small per diem, sometimes not. Things are hard all over...
If you want to PM me the company's name, I can inquire some more with folks in the know...

My thoughts exactly. Plus, the pay scale listed sounds "optimistic" to the extreme. I'd be cautious, at least.
Stay safe,

One guy has a group going on Facebook, and theres a post with more nasty details. Look for "ESI Fall 2010 EP RT"

Yeah I have found that if you are going out of pocket to that tune of cash and it is like taking a distance learning course probably is what you think it is..
I interviewed In Reno for a company where the guy was a former "spec ops" and all kinds of claims were made about how high speed all his contracts were going to be, all the money coming etc etc, but after being offered a job, horrible communications or none at all it appears that it is just a run of the mill rent a cop company..
They do that too , try to come off like the CIA of security and talk all high speed, then you find yourself in a goofy uniform guarding a library... it does happen........
I wish you the best out there :) ...

If you want to be a bodyguard/protection specialist I'd seriously consider going to a proper school.
Stuff like mail order EP stuff and such are more risky to you than they are worth. IMO
If you don't have the background, you most likely (especially without good connections) are going to start at the bottom.
The good schools and their networks can really help.
IMO only
and.. I just happen to live in the basement apartment of the old EPI school.
Candi says hello Sonny P. Canoeing anyone? haha ;)

100% scam brother. I would avoid them like the plague. Ask yourself if you would hire E.P. agents whose only qualifications were that they completed a video course?
There are a lot of schools teaching E.P. some of them are good, most of them are bad. Do not overlook the licensing requirements of the area you will be operating in as that can potentially jam you up. Florida, for instance has a law requiring a private investigators license.

I don't think anybody could have said it better than Ogunski did.
As far as Virginia and personal protection work goes, I came across this blog post about Virginia. It seems about right to me:
