Heres a knife I just made from an old file. My first time doing it and I think it turned out pretty good. I annealed it in some hot coals, shaped it with files, re-hardened it by heating it until it was no longer magnetic then quenched it in old motor oil. I then tempered it by heating the back of the blade and requenching in water. Wrapped it in wet leather and I got myself a good basic killing weapon. I sure felt good when I was done. Very cavemanishhttp://www.warriortalk.com/[IMG]http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa340/grantoga/Knife/knife002.jpg.

Yeah. Its rough looking but gets the job done. Its got a real thick blade. For some reason, when I think "prison shank", I think thin blade.

Yeah, I would think twice about dealing with an inmate with that in his hand.

Most of the shanks I have dealt with have been ice pick types made from pieces of chain link fence.

Heres the completed knife. Im pretty happy with it. Theres a small gap between one part of the handle and the blade, but I can live with it. Either the blade is a little bent or the hickory slab is. All in all I think its pretty cool. Now I just need to hone it.
