I actually just bought something very similiar. A Beamhit system, which has a laser mounted on a rod that fits in the barrel of your gun and you shoot it at a target which registers the pulse. You can set it up to beep when hit and you can change the size of the target with masks that make the target smaller.
Actually Gabe's book on shooting inspired this purchase as I wanted to do more constructive dry fire practice.
I feel a little embarassed sometimes to say I paid $250 for this big boy's toy, but if the results pay off then the investiment is nominal. With my toddler I watch all day (second shifter) and a pregnant wife I don't get to range as often as I should or would like to. So the Beamhit is the answer for now.
