Wow, that's some rigorous PT requirements!
Physical Readiness: The applicant must successfully complete a physical readiness test, which includes the following activities: 21 sit-ups in one minute, 13 push-ups in one minute, 1.5 mile run in no more than 21 minutes 36 seconds, 300 meter run in no more than 109 seconds, a handgun stability test involving dry fire of a revolver; five consecutive trigger pulls with each hand from a standing position while holding the barrel inside a 5 inch ring, five consecutive trigger pulls inside a 5 inch ring while holding the firearm in both hands from an unsupported kneeling position. Swim test: applicant must fall backwards into the water and remain afloat for 30 seconds then swim 100 meters without assistance or rest in no more than 5 minutes NOTE: Before being allowed to take the physical readiness tests the applicant will be required to provide a description of the test to a physician and obtain a written medical clearance.

Pretty sad PT requirements, that's for sure.

I agree the PT requirements are sad. But I will say that I have never seen a fat Game Warden.

I see it like this:
1) It's basically a "readiness" assessment to cull the herd before even attempting further training and further PT (yep, some folks would NOT be able to perform this simple test).
2) The same "requirements" apply to both sexes to increase diversity.
It would still be a kick ass job

I'm not keen on game wardens (from practical experience) nor the job they fulfill. One of those jobs I'd pass on because of my beliefs.

To a man, every Texas Game Warden I have met was a fine man. The pay used to suck something awful, but it is a job where you can do well if you can work without a lot of supervision and you have some common sense.

The last game warden in my county was fired after being brought up on charges for writing bad checks all over the county. The one before him quit after being passed over for promotion , funny how getting a DUI and using your LE position to try and cover it up ruined your promotion chances.
The area hasn`t had one for a couple years now and you can`t tell the difference.

+1
Game Wardens do a lot of heavy lifting in rural counties that is outside their job description. I have nothing but the highest respect for ours. If he called me and said he needed something, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Scott,
Totally agree with you on this one! The same Game Warden worked the area around my Aunt and Uncle's ranch out between Sonora and Ozona for probably 20 years. When he died, generations of ranchers came out to pay their respects.

Were outstanding people and top notch officers! They have been nothing but courteous and professional with me and anybody that I know who hunts/fish. I am sure there are bad apples everywhere. But I have not ran into one yet.

Its too bad they require a degree or I would think of applying. Maybe I should just go back to school and get one.

You should.
A degree opens a lot of doors. My wife finished hers up at age 32 after 10 years of being out of school. No way would she be where she is today without it.
As for me, I loved the look on people's faces when I told them "My wife is a Junior at UT."

not to mention, almost 50% (or more) of the time they approach someone, they have a gun in hand and have possibly been drinking. Those guys have balls.

One warden told me the fastest backup he had was 35 minutes one time. Luckily things cooled down fast for him that time. They definitely have to be on their toes.

Are you talking about Rodney Knight? Rodney was a good guy, but he would fine his own mother if she had one dove too many! This is actually the most difficult to obtain law enforcement job in the state.

It has to be, as a kid I always heard the adults talking about "Rod." As a youngster I always called him "sir" if I spoke to him. :D I remember my Uncle telling me that Rod always walked up on deer camps that were full of strangers with a cut down double gun. If he knew you, no problem.
Now for the $64k question: Did you know Owen and Vondene Fry? They ran the Hudspeth Hospital ranch for many, many years. The best memories of my childhood are on that place!

I have a lot or respect for Wardens. I've yet to run into a fat one. I've yet to run into one that didn't have a presence and bearing.
Crooked Wardens? Sure there are. There must be. But from the ones I've known I'd wager in a much lower percentage than other crooked authorities.
And it seems many Wardens don't like the "Professional Courtesy" game. If you're a cop caught poaching don't pull out your badge and FOP credentials and expect it to mean much to a Warden.
A Fishcop position? I'd rather play a piano in a whorehouse...especially if the job were in TEXASS...:D

I had heard that you Montanans had taught your sheep to dance ;)...I guess unemployed pianists can move to Montana and avoid getting a real job in Texas.

Local Warden's are also doing "tours" on border lakes to help curb narcotics and human trafficking. As was eluded to earlier in this post, Game Wardens are frequently used to get in the door, so to speak, because of their broad ranging search abilities. From what I've heard, these border "tours" can get pretty western. It takes a unique and strong personality to be a Game Warden. We have good folks around here.

We used to have the "solo" type of wardens that have been described here in this thread. Men of mettle and backbone of steel. Their moral beliefs were apparent and everybody respected them and would consider it an honor to help them if they were in need which I have never noted to be.
These days in So.Oregon I've noted wardens working in "packs" hiding just back of the tree line with their fancy new F250's and all sorts of spy gear to catch anybody who used their left hand to blow their noses. If one kept their eyes open they could spot cameras hidden in bushes and in trees trained on favorite local fishing spots. This type of warden was right out of college with a brand new degree and they didn't have enough common sense to fill a 4oz cup.
We had two wardens drop down on us fishing for salmon on the Rogue River one day several years ago. One was an old salt with 30+ years in the area and he had a newbie in tow apparently teaching him the ropes.
We had a three fish stringer of Kings that we were bleeding off in a creek just off the river. We have a stupid law in Oregon that says you can't clean your fish on the river. This could mean an extra 15-20 lbs.of guts and blood that you had to haul off for up to maybe two miles to get back to your rig. If you looked in the river you could see hundreds of carcasses on the river bottom rotting after they had fulfilled their mission in life. To add a small amount of blood and some guts would hardly hurt anything to the ecology of the river. In fact it helps ( another story ). Well the young pup came up to us and asked about our fish staying cool in this creek. We freely admitted that we had cut a ring above their tails and were bleeding the fish and then, as we listened to the junior warden spout off one law after another that we had broken we just kept our mouths shut out of respect for the senior warden but we stared into his eyes and the stupid laws that were passed by some jerk, ( probably from California ) who'd moved up here to ruin our state as he had ruined Cali. Anyway, the senior warden eventually said something to the effect of, "Now Charlie, these boys are locals and I've known most of them their entire lives. Their good folk and we are going to leave them be cause they are fishing to feed their family's. We all had our licenses so everything else was in order.
In short, the head warden had COMMON SENSE and junior had NONE. Junior wanted to write us up for as much as he could. Senior just said, " Have a good day boys", and turned and walked away. I miss the old wardens cause our neck of the woods seems to have these newbies here now. So, we hike further away to get away from them. I miss the old ways.

I have a very big problem with this abuse of power.
