I've seen a couple of pictures of this Russian holding a rifle and I can't identify it. Here's some articles with pictures of the solider with the rifle. Is the picture bogus? If not, what kind of rifle, and why an AK (i.e. what's the advantage of this rifle)?

VSS Vintorez "Special Sniper Rifle" fires a 9x39mm subsonic round.

Subsonic heavy bullets with an integral noise suppressor, similar to the .300 Whisper cartridge, a big fat heavy bullet moving slow.

Kinda like the .45 A.C.P. cartridge, sorta. A sledgehammer being swung compares to a pickaxe being swung as well, either slow and heavy or sharp lighter and fast. Either one should work okay for serious social occasions.

240 grain 9mm bullet at just under 1100 fps. It seems very well liked, someone I know who was in Chechnia said it was the sign of the better troops when it was found.

Yes, I am sure those blindfolded Georgian's found out the ballistic qualities of the round soon after this pic was snapped!

And the best part.......In their continued quest to save us from ourselves, the benevolent sections of our beloved government in charge of such things has deemed us far too stupid and the gun far too dangerous for us to ever get to have one.

+1.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said in a previous post:

"They have suceeded in EMASCULATING AMERICA"

I use my S-12 as a great example, to re-install it's testicles, I have to send it to Tony at Tromix and drop an extra $800. SAD.

It should be able to penetrate balistic helmet at 300m. And I love the sound of the shot being fired :D

Outstanding videos--I really liked the natural fauna camo on the 2nd rifle.

The fact that the VSS is in very common supply in the 58th AOR is interesting seems like every squad has one.
