Does anyone make an AR in 5.45x39?

5.45 ammo is really cheap (almost half the cost of 5.56) and would allow you to practice the manual of arms with a lower cost cartridge. Some people argue that no one makes the ammo domestically and if imports are ever barred, you're screwed.

I would argue that the practice outweighs the possible loss of ammo. No more ammo - ditch it, but you had the opportunity to get good use out of it.

The point may be moot if no one makes an upper or complete gun in this caliber.

Thoughts?

Alexander Arms makes the Ghengis .220 upper and a complete rifle. Do a search on one of the AR dedicated websites , you should find a review . SGN and several gun mags have done articles on Alexanders work , the reviews tend to be positive.

You could also contact David Fortier , he has written articles about Alexander arms , Krebs , the AMU , etc...

They do but the problem has always been the magazine source.

IIRC, the MGI Hydra lower & QD barrel upper is the best platform on the market now for this type of conversion because you'll be able to use AK-47/74 magazines.

I think as soon as there are more non-AK weapons chambered in 5.45, we will see US makers producing this round. Once that happens, the 5.45 will be a very good choice for a SD Rifle.

I have had mine for years - an Alexander Arms .21 Genghis. The new C-Products mags are great, but I have had good luck with the the ProMag polymer AR-15 5.56 mags as well. My upper was unreliable at first until I had M4 feed ramps cut, but has been 100% since then.

As long as 5.45 stays around $125 per thousand - and the Russians are in the process of surplusing a great deal of 5.45 ammo - you can pay for the upper with only a few thousand rounds of training.

Smith and Wesson has an AR upper in 5.45x39 the reports on function have been good, here's a link to a review at GOTX

Anybody else have experience with this?

A Ruger mini-14 in 5.45x39mm with hicap mags would be great...

But it will NEVER happen.

What would be great about a Mini14 in 5.45? Hi cap mags would be impossible to get and cost a lot, accuracy would be terrible, and the weapon now costs almost as much as decent AR which would be far more accurate, easily swapped to 5.56 if needed, and have a plethora of mags available.

The 5.45 AR can use 5.56 mags, all of the accessories/modifications for a 5.56 AR, and can be rebarreled in less than an hour to 5.56. Also, the 5.45 lower is actually a 5.56 lower. You can slap on the 5.56 upper of your choice whenever you feel like it.

Waiting here at work is the hardest part. Well, maybe that and NOT HAVING A RANGE TO SHOOT AT TONIGHT. Other than that, I'm coping just fine

Alas, it seems to be $179/1080 rounds, delivered, for the surplus stuff at Ammoman now.

My humble Gun GAME Guy theory,

Okay here it goes, 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 have tapered shells, once you fire a shot, as soon as the spent shell budges it is no longer in contact with the chamber walls allowing for a quick clean extraction. Using this system in a finikey AR sounds more than logical to me almost a no-brainer.

Well had a rough day at work and need some sleep good night comrades!

Buy it where you want - I don't care - but it is $225 for $2160, plus UPS, from Rguns.net and not much more from AIM right now.

AMMOman is a great place to buy ammo - I have spent thousands with the guy - but it never hurts to compare pricing.

The problem, of course, is that most former combloc ammo is steel case and buldges at a different rate than brass. This is the old problem with Wolf 5.56 in AR-15 rifles, solved with polymer-coated Wolf ammo. The 5.45 has no such coating, and the chamber finish makes a big difference. Alexander Arms got it right - I hope S&W did as well.

Thats where I've been getting mine (Rguns) $260 for 2160rds to the door, thats $130 per 1080 delivered.

I took delivery last night. Might be able to shoot it today. Here's my impressions so far:

-parkerizing/finish is even and well done

-trigger pull is heavy but crisp due to extra strength springs to overcome the hard Russian primers

-carrier key is staked like it's cool; very well done.

-extractor has the black insert and a Crane O-ring upgrade; very nice to have that from the factory, it shows attention to detail

-lower receiver is definitely a bone stcok S&W M&P lower

-PMags do not drop free; I plan to remedy this with some wet on the mag well lips using 600 grit sandpaper

I also have a 5.45 x 39 AR15 rifle, flatop, 16" barrel M4 configuration with a Blackened stainless steel barrel. Mine was made by Olympic arms; no problems at all so far. I have been using the C products 5.45 x 39 30 rounds mags and wolf 60 grain ammo. I have not had it for long but have fired around 350 rounds through it. It is a nice alternative to 5.56 x 45 rifles, as the ammo is less expensive. Accuracy is quite a bit better than my Romanian WASR AK74 clone. Get one if you can....I think you will be happy with it.:)
