Just a couple comments and additions:

Blackwater: Know the requirements for the contract you're going to and avoid the ones that aren't tough to meet. Every big company gets their share of knotheads, but if you are up to speed you won't be near them long. They've hired me twice, but I went elsewhere before signing the contract. They still call me, so no hard feelings there: nature of the business.

CSC_Dyncorp: Kabul was a hairball, but they do 100 contracts right for every one they mess up. I worked for them a very worthwhile year. I would never do Iraq PSD for them, but they have other contracts as well.

Steele: great training (ITG grad here), good rep from Haiti and CONUS assignments (I have worked for them and was satisfied). They were thoroughly messed up in Iraq. As long as I could talk to the country manager first, I'd work for Steele again anywhere.

EOD Tech and MVM: Both hired guys I fired for cause in Iraq. I've known good guys there and good teams, and bad guys and really bad teams.

Sandi Group: I know a couple guys who've been there two years and love it, but they explain it is owned by an Arab so you have to know how that game is played. I don't have time for that, myself.

The short answer is that the company matters less than the mission and the team. Don't risk your life with people you don't know if you don't have to. If you can't get a personal "in" somewhere, then the big companies are a reasonably safe bet while you build up your network. Get that network running ASAP, and start looking for your next contract as soon as you are awarded your current one.

Karl:

Any of these companies hire people for Kosovo?

To do what in Kosovo?

I think PAE has the CivPol contract there now. Group 4 Securicor had the FPO contracts for Camp Bondsteel and others around there. The WPPS work was spread between, IIRC, Dyncorp, Blackwater and Triple Canopy, but I don't know which does Kosovo anymore. Dyncorp had it for years. You're better off at lightfighter for that sort of updated info since I am no longer in the business.

As far as non-gov't contracts I'd have to touch some contacts, which I'd do for a very small percentage seeing as how you're family and all:D
