But I'm doing great
I'm assuming that your doc thinks that your heart and blood pressure are ok. That's especially important off the bat. Good that you covered that.

I've seen novices work out so hard that they actually threw up from the shock to their system. For a couple days they thought they had the flu. Same thing for newbies to construction work. Ease into it, man. :)

Rest is as important as exercise. Sore muscles are damaged muscles. Every stage of training has its own tipping point for overtraining. And overtraining is very counterproductive.

Just seemed to me that you might be overdoing it considering that you're at the beginning of a regimen.

Best to ya.

10 400 meters with 45-90 second breaks between

This started as a comedy of errors. The college fenced in the football field this year, but I found the practice field as I finished I realized the curve wasn't as wide as the track around the Stadium. So I'm counting the walk in and the walk out as being about 3/4 mile. Then my timer broke, so i used my cell phone and aproxamated a minute rest. I didn't time the walk in. From the time I started the event to the car was approx 50 minutes

completed 10 laps around the field, which 4 laps and abput 3/4 =1 mile 4laps jogged/slow run
4 ran length/walked curve
2 walked complete
brisk walk in and out of event

Thanks, Skyguy
I really appreciate the feedback and totally understand where your coming from. When I talk to Dino, (every night)he's already seen this. We go over everything. I hear the event for the day and I think no way:eek: But i have explict instuctions to only do what I can do, to go slow and do the best range of motion I can. I am absolutely in control of my w/o because there is just me. Which is definately, training my lack of self discipline and mental toughness. If I had an event that i only could have done say 2 rounds of thats fine. I simply log it. I try to do better the next time. A week ago, I could not have jogged around that field 1 time. Each day I see a little bit more improvement. Heck, I do burpees in subsets of 1 sometimes, take break and recover and move on. Week one of anything, brings about muscular soreness, especially to my thighs. Because this is for lack of a better word, more combatives type conditioning, I've worked my lower body way more than ever, probably every session in someway. The thing is the W/o's progressions have so far loosened up sore spots from the last w/o. Its planned that way. Its certainly a different paradigm of training than most of us are use to seeing. Thanks Buddy:D Take care

CWS, its interesting about the knees. I don't have bad knees, but was getting like old guy soreness in them. Haven't had a problem since this and get up off the floor easier, discounting the lactic acid:D Again Its only the 2 week of this, I wouldn't have brought this up yet, but to answer some of Skyguys concerns

April 11th:
- Approximately 3.5 mile walk w/40 lb. weight vest. Did it at a pretty good clip, but to tell the truth I am at the point where I cannot really walk any faster and I barely break a light sweat any more. I can't run without knee pain, and I sure the heck don't want to be running with 40 pounds on me (unless it's for my life). Gonna have to figure something new out....

CWS,
I've got knee problems also after a couple of surgery's. If I run more than 2 days a week on the roads I experience knee pain. What I've been doing is running 2-3 days on a treadmill:mad: and I started doing stair climbs as fast as possible with full gear.(about 35-40lbs) It gets the heart rate up nicely and I'm throwing pushups and flutterkicks into it at different intervals to break up the boredom. The stairs don't seem to bother my knees as much as running.

Thanks.

When I do hill climbs I get a good huffing and puffing going, but the straight walk just does not do it any more.

What about an elliptical? I think they are pretty easy on the knees, and mine gives me a great workout. You could even do it with a weight vest on if you wanted. I bought mine for less than 600.00, and it is very high quality.

Depending upon my tax return, if any, I will have to consider something like that. Maybe even a C2 rower.

That would be a good choice also. My elliptical is made by Horizon Fitness, and so far, it's been bulletproof.

3 mile run. I ran around the edge of a soccer complex. Although the ground was rough and uneven it is not as hard on my knees and hips as asphalt.

+1 on the eliptical for a quality workout that is not to hard on the joints.

That sure got me thinking about how I measure up in the strength dept. compared to you hard working 40ish and older guys.
Admittedly, I'm probably older and weaker than ya'all and at my age my workouts are meant for strength 'maintenance' rather than progress (BTDT).

I don't find much need for strength per se because my sport/training uses others' force against themselves. I just want to stay healthy, fit and loose.

Today, my strength evaluation, not my max, involved these muscle group exercises:

Bench 285 lbs for 2 reps
Full Squat 285 lbs for 10 reps
Lunges 100 lbs for 10 reps each leg
Curl 90 lbs for 10 reps
Seated Press 185lbs for reps

30 minutes, 2 miles @ 4.2

I'm 5' 11", 185lbs, 34" waist, all my brown hair, most of my teeth, most of my mind, never roids or hgh. :)

Recently
I have dumbell benched 120's for 4 reps Dumbell curled 60 for 5 reps. I havent done a barbell bench in several years but should be around your weight. I don't do squats because of a spine injury.

40's 190 lbs should be 175. I train to maintain strenght.
In my 20's I weighed 170 my best lifts were squat 565 with thigh breaking parallel with the floor, Bench 350 with a pause at the chest and deadlift 575.

Time to work out today was very limited...and I've been up since 2 AM .
But since I have an APFT coming up in a few days, I had to do something.
So pyramids it was:

Regular push-ups x 15
Regular sit-ups x 15
Wide arm push-ups x 14
Elevated crunches x 14
Close hand push-ups (diamonds) x 13
Rocking sit-ups x 13
Then back to regular push-ups x 12
Regular sit-ups x 12
Wide arm push-ups x 11... and so on, all the way down to 1, performed slowly, with no rest in between, and paying close attention to proper form.

Total repetitions: 120 of each
Time: 18 minutes.
Not my best work out ever but it will do for today.

The hours in the office have been very long lately, and mentally draining as well, but finding the time to exercise, even if it's just a bit like today, is a must for me. :D

That's why I'm glad I have all my equipment in my rec room. I hate talking to all the idiots while I'm working out--I'm pretty much a loner when I w/o.

You probably feel like you can use your newfound strength because you're training your body as one unit, which is as it is meant to be used. Good job, and keep it up!

Dino says we are simply laying ground work and my focus is to show up and do the work the best I can. Thrusters suck the life force outta ya, but are awesome excercises. I hit full range of motion(full squats)) on a large majority of reps. This is a huge accomplishment from the 1st time I did these in week 1. Daily talks with Dino are helping me stay on Focus. 4 rds for time

10 Sumo deadlift high pulls Completed 3 sets, no subsets:D
10 Squats comp:3 sets no subsets
10 DB Thrusters comp: 3 sets no subsets
10 DB SWings comp 3 sets no subsets
10 Burpees Comp 2 sets subsets of 4,3,3

30 minutes

Had a gym mishap today on the second set of DB swings, last rep the guy behind me lost his grip on a 45lb plate. In getting my foot outta the way and trying to keep from falling I felt the left side of my lower back tighten up . I tried to continue completing a set of 4 of the excercises. It started tightening so I ended the evolution. I don't think its a big deal, so I'm icing it, took my gout medicine which is a nsaid and we'll see how I feel in the A.M. On the plus side, doing no subsets for these exercises was a big deal and I was sucking wind and improving. I am amazed at the fullness of the squats. the structure/form of the exercises is what keeps you safe, accidently falling out of the structure lead to the pull. I feel very safe in the structure

April 20th:
- Did a bodyweight routine using weight vest (40 lbs.), ankle weights and Heavy Hands. I picked 15 exercises of the 30 or so I normally do, and did triplets of each of the 15. That would make 45 sets in all.

No time to do any more right now. Gotta go with Dino to pick up SonnyP at 1230. Then who knows what else thereafter.

For you guys in Northern Virginia, remember this is the weekend SonnyP is in town at The Warriors Forge teaching combat conditioning and Systema.

http://www.teamruthless.com/event1.html

Evening: After hanging with SonnyP and Dino for a few hours I was inspired to do some combatives arm work. Did eight HeavyHands exercises, five 36" pipe drills, three 30" pipe drills, four 48" pipe drills. Closed with some rattan stick and machete Siniwali (had to stop when neighbors started hanging out on deck to watch).

EDIT FOR ADD-ON: After watching my daughter have a stellar day, I was inspired to do a little more today:

Seated press 185 x 6
Curl standing 85 x 10

Start of week4. Whew,I'm back.

Apr 20
Lower back hurt from accident, I wore a brace most of day and used ice and heat thru out the day. Dino gave me a few core excercises which really helped. I had gotten popcorn stuck in dental work, bad toothache late at nite.

Sat Apr 21
Did the core excercises before work, wore brace and caddied 1 bag. No pain in back, though I was taking alot of ibuprofen for tooth. Dentist is a member wrote me amoxillin. Hopefully it'll end it. Sunday tooth hurt like hell till Monday AM pain feels under control now. The only reason I'm posting about the toothache is that it seems that when I start to make changes obstacles come outta the woodwork, not noting everything buts its been an interesting few weeks:rolleyes:

Apr 23
Treadmill touch over 5k, 3.70 miles done at level 4 on a random program in 63 minutes. I ran portions of it at 5.0 until ankles hurt a bit(tired), then walked at 3.0 or more till they felt better. 5.0 is a personal over 40 best and I've never done over 45 minutes of cardio

P.S. My workouts are scaled back this week as I have a very physical 4 days coming up starting Thursday, so we're working with that event. Also, I'm not sure this log adequately describes the progress as I'm amazed at the improvments I've made but there more along the lines of performance. The lack of stiffness is a thing to behold

Dino was fully aware that I'd be walking like Frankenstein's Monster (the move version) from tuesday's workout so he put me on the following workout

2 Rounds of:
Rowing for 500 meters
25 Kettlebell Swings (kettlebell weighed 16 kg)
100 meter Farmer's Walk (20 kg in each hand)Then

2 rounds of
25 push-ups
25 sit-upsDino is an excellent motivator and really gets a feel for his clients in terms of needs and development.

The solutions he provides to physical issues make a lot of sense as well.

Example: Want to get good at push-ups? Work dropping belly area weight. You WILL see and feel the difference.

Hiked to the top of Pikes Peak Sunday 4-29.

The trail is 12 miles long and rises from trailhead at 6600 ft elevation to the peak at 14,110 ft. This hike is considered to be at the top of the difficulty scale because of the distance combined with the elevation gain.

There are 'many' people who can run up the trail in 4 hours!
The record is 2hrs 1 minute. My age group running record is 3hrs 4 minutes.

It took us about 6 hours to hike up, we rested along the way and we rode down in a friends car.

For anybody who might be curious about the trail....or think it's an easy stroll......below is a link to Google-Earth which shows the combination trail and the route for the Pikes Peak Ascent Race.

I come up with 3.105, rounded to 3.11 I suck at math, so I'm not sure. You know if the whole world went to miles it be so much easier:D

You are correct. I punched a wrong key on calculator.

rporta
05-02-2007, 03:06 PM
Actually 5km is 3 and 1/8th miles.

The way I calculated if 5 km is 5000 meters, 1 mile is 1600 meters and finally 1/8th is 200 meters.
3 miles would be 4.8 km plus an other 200m.
Thus 3 and 1/8 th miles.

So the final calculation by inputting 5000 divided 1600 is 3.125 miles.

Of course I'm terrible at math myself but I have quite a bit of experience putting miles into kilometers and vice versa because for a long time i used running programs that were in miles but my parents' car's odometer was in kilometers .

So picture a somewhat out of shape kid sitting in the passenger seat with a pad of paper and a calculator plugging away while my mom or dad called out kilometer after kilometer.

Hope this helps.

Just getting back into training after a week at home with my mom. I am in SLC teaching...no weights. Did some abs, and some pullups on the backside of a staircase. Then 45 minute run on the treadmill.

Sounds like a challenging way to spend a great Sunday.
Oh yeah. It's a challenge for sure.
Might even call it altitude training.

Six hours hiking a mountain trail that rises from 7000 feet up to a 14,110 ft peak is definitely 'challenging'. :)

Thin air up there and it's cold.

:D Its that retirement thing, without goals or something to look forward to we get easily bored, which leads to depression. I know because of the acting thing. If I'm not teaching, working or have a project that excites me. The drapes in my apartment never open. They've been closed for 2 years. May open them today;) Working with actors I know its the rule ,not the exception. I have really close friends who I never hear from unless they got a gig. The rest is wallow time. How do you think I got where I am, Which Dino will tell you is pretty much run a ground. The working out thing can only be part of the puzzle. It needs to lead somewhere. Its that Mans search for meaning thing. Your simply in a transition phase. Your smart, strong and vital. You'll figure out how to channel that energy. Hope this helps a bit

30 sit ups
30 push ups

I tried really to push thru this one, but this is way tougher than it looks. The burpees at the end are purely evil. I was getting a really powerful upward pop on the thrusters today, that hadn't been there before. It deteriorated but it was there. This is one everybody should at least try

Today my lifting buddy and I decided to see where we would stand in Sparta--at least in Frank Miller's version of it. So, we took it upon ourselves to give the workout Gym Jones put the actors through a look for ourselves. Much like training with Gabe it made me realize that there is much more in the "Need to Acheive" column than there is in the "I'm There, Baby" column. The workout consists of the following and is to be done with zero pause. It is boogie, boogie, boogie from the whistle.

25 pull-ups
135lb. Dead-lift for 50 reps
50 push-ups
50 box jumps on a 24” platform
135 lb. Floor Wipers 50 reps
35 lb. Kettle bell presses 25 reps each arm
25 pull-ups
=300 reps

Here is a vid explaining the sequence:

http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=fitness&category=workout.plans&conitem=5e1790ecab7e1110VgnVCM20000012281eac____

Apparently the record completion time for the training sequence was and is held by one of the actors who finished it in about 18 minutes. It took me and my buddy an hour. Pretty frickin' sad and I'm not a weak guy, but I realized just how much more time I need to dump into cardio. God bless America!

Kettlebells
Dumbbell thrusters

Now the whiney part:cool: The gout thing went full blown in my right wrist last night. I could not write my name. I took the meds which make me tired and affect performance and wind. I got up and it still hurt. I decided to work out anyway wearing a wrist brace. As I was getting ready to leave my shoulder/neck knotted up. I did tennis ball therapy. I decided to try the workout anyway, even though it was shoulder intensive. Threw some bengay on and worked out. No real problems during W/O. Its tightening a bit a few hours after. I'll spend the day working on it. Wrist is much better

Thanks. Dino's stuff is great. I think he majored in nice in a sick way:D

I haven't done a thing with my diet, yet, Though my waist is less than last posted maybe even a half inch. I've made a few starts and stops, eat clean then binge. My main problem is Soda. On the TpI board in December( I think) I posted that had lost 16lbs in 19 days. All I did was drink water instead of soda, but i snapped back hard after it. So I know I'll drop a lot of weight simply by making that change. I believe I could have posted amazing numbers last month, just by doing that one thing, but the most important thing for me is to establish the workouts and stay health. As injury has put me here as much as diet.

I probably won't use much suppliments. I really like myoplex as I don't crave sweets, while on it. Unfortunately, for some dumb reason I get gas pain once a week that lasts for hours. It would help me a lot, but I'm afraid of it. I've tried most other mrp's and protien powder. It may help to take digestive enzymes, but I took too much Excedrin a few months back and my stomach is not quite right yet. As well as I'm not sure what the added protien will do to the gout even though its a milk source

The first changes I will institute are eating breakfast and drinking a couple of bottles of gatorade instead of soda. Less sugar, less calories. I promise to post it when I start it. FWIW, I was drinking between 120-160 ounces of Sprite a day or 6-8 20oz bottles. I'm currently drinking between 6-8 12 oz. cans . As a kid we always drank soda

I had hoped to start this Monday, but gout doesn't like rapid changes in diet. I'm restricted till I get outta the acute stage to milk, cheese bread fruit and high fructose corn syrup:D I'll see how this latest episode plays out and shoot for next week

Peregrine, Thank you! After posting my response to you, I decided to take this a step further and clean up the diet effective April 9th. I have a template that I'm working with which I'll share after I've gotten used to it a bit. Seeing as how making the workouts a public things has helped keep me on track announcing this progression seemed logical. Dino's been patient with it,because of surrounding circumstances, but I know I can do better. Give me a week or two and if your still interested, repost and I'll give you the map I used and how I did, good or bad. I really appreciated your question. Answering it made me realize I'm working way too hard to not play full out.

Felt good today, pukie came around but i shoved him back and finished strong. Forgot to work grip, but i got a hand cut on my stickhand so laying off grip this week. Silly me decided to rip a calous off my hand instead of cutting it and i ripped too much skin off. rookie move. :D lol.

:p ROTFLMAO. My bed is on the floor pretty much. That 1st week the funniest thing was watching me trying to figure out how to stand up. My mind said rise while my body thought about it for a while:cool: I did consider hiring a hooker, not for sex, but to put on my shirt.

I haven't done a thing with my diet,yet.......My main problem is Soda.

FWIW, I was drinking between 120-160 ounces of Sprite a day or 6-8 20oz bottles. I'm currently drinking between 6-8 12 oz. cans .
Gout?
Get your uric acid under control. Sprite raises uric acid which in turn agitates gout.

As for your exercise, a little slide back from your initial exuberance is to be expected. Don't get bummed out.

Most people make their most dramatic changes and physical improvements in their first 3 months of lifestyle/exercise plans. And then they settle in to incremental improvements, maintenance and a lifelong nutrition/exercise/rest regime. And some just quit.

Keep in mind that mental toughness is 'much' more important than physical toughness because that's what keeps one going long after the bloom is off the rose. Fitness and a healthy lifestyle is a lifelong endeavor.

Do what works best for you and don't quit.

Soda is definately acidic for your body. The body in an acid state is very susceptible to maladies.
The only time i suspect soda would be marginal would be post workout to get an insulin spike from all the sugar then follow with protein.
Just think how they use coke on metal to remove rust to get to the bare metal and people ingest that stuff.

The powdered flavored stuff is decent for getting calories down. I am not sure on long term effects of them.

Got my early am session in.
added db(plate) throws to the mix. used the 5#, i made some divets in the lawn. lol. The db throws seem like they translate well into a nice straight punch, got them from RossEmanit.
Working them in the small 3-5second window right after a maximal press i think the most benefit would be found. Using them at the tail of the circuit seemed to give me too much rest. I may do less than the 10 a side next time.

Soda is pure crap and I can honestly say I do not drink more than a can/cup every 6 months, and only because there is nothing else to drink at the moment.

I've always thought that keeping the alkaline balance would help the gout. The doctor said uric acid from purines meats, peas is differnt than citric acid and doesn't affect it. However, i talked to a guy who can't eat tomatoes, cause it'll blow up. So we'll see what happens here

If it were a ski slope, it would be a 'black' run - that's how steep it is.

The stats for that hike are:

6,600 ft elevation to 8,611 ft elevation.
Rise: 2,011 ft
Length: 1.02 miles
Average grade: 41 percent
Steepest grade: 68 percent
Over 5,000 steps each way
Total time: 2 hoursLooking 'up' from the start:

Today's insane workout:

Run 1/4 mile or row 500 meters
50 Slam Balls
50 Wall Balls
50 Sit-ups

I did three sequences, but didn't finish the last 50 situps (only got 6).

Maximum time is 45 minutes. It took me the full 45 minutes to get to the last round of situps.

ARGH! That was TOUGH!!!!

****

Slam Ball: Squat and hold a 12 pound ball. Raise the ball up above your head and extend upward. Squat down and slam the ball down onto the floor.

Wall Ball: Squat on a ball. Hold a 12 pound ball at your chest, elbows in. Rise up and throw the ball upward onto the wall. There's a spot 8-10 feet up. Hit the spot, catch the ball, and squat all the way down. These are awful! Especially 50 of them!

If you have to rest, rest only 5-30 seconds. Vary the time. It really helps to have someone count for you and motivate you.
