I think that the "sweet science" offers a lot of training opportunities
in the way of excellent workout, mindset and gauge of progress.
In the books section I've even made a shameless plug for the book,
"Box Like the Pros" by Former Heavyweight Champion "Smokin'" Joe Frazier.

Simply put there isn't much out there that offers such fantastic cardio-
vascular workouts coupled with excellent coordination-building routines.
The training approach of most boxers and most boxing gyms isn't one of
"hyper-martiality" or "sink-or-swim" which I feel is found in far too
many martial-arts schools and may lead to unintended injury. Rather, most
gyms focus on the build up of a boxers skills in a loose, conservative
manner focusing on the sport aspect. Simply put, in most gyms a student
doesn't have to worry about egregious injury that limits them from
training.

Cardiovascular exercises consists mainly of foundation "roadwork"
(running) everyday, jump rope to develop "body-unity" and coordination,
various "windsprint" type exercises (Burpee routines, alternate medicine
ball lifts, etc...) and, of course, heavy bag work and sparring to refine
skill and develop coordination.

Further, boxing eschews the superflous buildup of muscle to non-sustainable
(for ones own body that is...) levels and focuses instead on the development
of the minimum amount of muscle necessary to perform a coordinated motion
without tension.

The coordination and balance that is developed through training is rivaled
and perhaps surpassed only by the art of dancing. Coordination building
exercises focus mainly on shadow boxing, speed bag workout, mitt-training
and, again, sparring.

Both of these physical-focuses are excellent parallels to the skills that
most of us seek to develop. Cardio shape to RUN AWAY!, and the development
of coordination and balance not to fumble when needing to engage.

The ability to perform hyper-refined, coordinated gestures (Weave-faint-jab-
jab-cross-bob-cross, etc...) under the stress of the ring is an example of
the mindset that boxing usually builds. Boxers improvise the gestures that
they engage with, vary the routine semi-consciously rather that consciously,
relying on the training to dictate the refinement of motions for the
particular instance. In addition the ability of the boxer to deal with fear
and act in spite of it is another mental benefit that comes from training.

The last mental benefit that comes through boxing is the development of
discipline. Discipline to get up every morning to hit the road. Discipline
to eat right. Discipline to train hard. Discipline to know how to hold back
when training with inexperienced guys.

These mental traits, again, fit nicely with the mental skills that most
of us seek to develop/engrain: deal with fear and stress by relying on
training and developing the discipline to practice our draw/stance/etc
every day. I do my draw after my workout when I'm most shaky/burned/etc...
(Only, I use an airsoft pistol to practice and develop handling skills...)

Finally, boxing offers a way to gauge your growth/potential by giving you
a goal to train towards: bouts. Simply put, training for a bout sharpens
ones focus and resolve. Bouting also allows one to put the mental and physical
together and experience stress in a controlled environment.
This last aspect is kind of a gauge to see how one could possibly act in a
threatening situation steeped with fear and anxiety.

If you haven't, take a look at www.rosstraining.com (http://www.rosstraining.com) Ross is a boxer, and has a lot of resources, workouts, etc. related to boxing.

Boxing is an excellent workout, there's no doubt about that.

Ross is unbelieveable. His book "Never Gymless" is excellent if you are into bodyweight workouts.

purchased!! (Just need to finish moving! etc.etc.etc.)

Ditto with his book "Infinite Intensity"...

BTW, a "technique" book that I've worked on for a long time to
get out of speed bag ruts has been "The Speed Bag Bible".

I'll be posting a review of that in the books section after I finish my
lunch!

The NG is the best bodyweight exercise book I have ever seen.

Most every day, Ruthless Training Concepts in Manassas, VA has a workout of the day geared towards fighters. Here is today's for example:


Ruthless Regimen 3
Do As Many Rounds As Possible Of The Following:
1st Minute-Shadow Boxing (2lbs)
2nd Minute-Burpees
3rd Minute-Upper Cuts/Hooks
4th Minute-Star Jumps
5th Minute-Jabs/Crosses
6th Minute-Duck Walks


They also generally have 5 other workouts of the day, usually several of which are quite intense:

A few other fighter oriented samples:

Elbows and Knees Only
Do 12 Rounds on the Heavy Bags
3 Minutes Work/30 Seconds Rest
---


Do 15 (3 minutes work/30 seconds rest) in the following manner
3 rounds of rope
3 rounds of shadow boxing/ring work with 2-5lb. weights
3 rounds of double end bag
3 rounds of body bag
3 rounds of shadow boxing/ring work with 2-5lb. weights
----

As Many Rounds As Possible of:
1st Minute - Burpees
2nd and 3rd Minute - Shadow Boxing in Ring with 3-5lb. Weights
4th Minute - Kettlebell Swings (16kg/24kg)
5th and 6th Minute - Shadow Boxing in Ring with 3-5lb. Weights
7th Minute - Burpees
Rest 30 Seconds Then Repeat
