I’m a fan of hard use “tool” watches. The two that get the most use are my Dad’s Rolex (which I had repaired by Rolex after he passed) and an older Deep Blue 1,000m dive watch based on a Seiko Automatic movement. (I prefer mechanical watches.) Gabe, I’ve seen quite a few photos with you rocking a newer Submariner. What is this watch?
If you are also a watch nerd, sing out!

Sadly, watches are something I never got big into. Mostly been a Timex or Seiko guy, nothing special.
Latest one has just been another cheap Timex that has served me well for the last 5 years or so since my last Seiko automatic crapped out.

Never been a watch wearer, don't even like long sleeve shirt's. Need to rethink a watch. Only one I currently have is a pocket watch that doesn't run that was my grandfather's.
I do like the plain and simple design.

I hadn't worn a wrist watch (in many years) until just a year or so
ago, because I worked at a job where I was having
to take my watch off constantly. That was 20 years
ago. I found fob watches & was good to go. But a
few months ago I ran across a G-Shock at a resale
shop for cheap enough to try it. Well, I am hooked
again. It needed a battery & the hands needed to
be reset. Amazing features buried in the digital
side, but as a basic watch, it's been fun.
I don't feel the urgent need to go out and buy
another one, but I could readily see me buying
a bunch and stacking them deep. They have
an amazing array of variations.
Edit to add: Microtech OTF's are my weakness
right now. I bought a used Black D/E Ultratech
a couple of weeks ago, and a Green D/E Serrated
Dirac Sunday. With Microtech in my AO, we have
lots well supplied dealers here.
(I didn't want to derail this thread, and I can't
find the last Microtech thread.)

Somewhere in the house, I have an original G Shock - like 1980’s. It was the watch I wore in the service. I tossed it under a rolling deuce-and-half once to prove how tough it was. (E1s are obviously easily amused…). Tough watches.

Digital watches have served me well in the pool and on decompression stops. The digital stopwatch readout is helpful, but not stylish.
The Luminox brand have always been intriguing to my eye. I regret not getting one long ago.
As the years pass, my focus is less on counting seconds. For that, I can use my dad's old school stopwatch from swim team days.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221023/4804fd3272288689bef7b0e92ffd5b2b.jpg

Watches are one of my faults, enjoy collecting and having multiple watches available, I could wear a new watch every week of the year, almost, need 2 more to make that a reality. Everything from Patek grand complication to $150 fitbit. A "hard use watch", that would be a stainless Rolex submariner.

Currently a Omega Professional Speedmaster. Have had a SS Datejust and a SS/18k Daytona. Both have been gifted to our son. SS Ladies Datejust for wife then gifted to our Daughter. SS/18k Ladies Yachtmaster for the wife now.

I have a g shock mud master and a luminox of some kind. Watches always served function only for me. I bought a smart watch once but never could remember to charge it. I guess I need to be classier on this subject.

My Dad’s Rolex is currently back at the mother ship being brought back to original condition. They had to source parts because they no longer had stock, so it will take extra time and money to get it back to original condition. Worth it. He got it on one of his his mid tour leaves from Vietnam, I got it upon his death.

Seiko dive watch used to be my go to for a mechanical, Did some orient two tone subs.
Gshock for a digital
Had a Tudor Pelagos for a while, but was too nice for work as they wouldn’t replace it if broken.
Looked around for what I wanted, titanium case and bracelet, domed Ar sapphire crystal , Swiss mechanical movement, good lume, minimal 300m resistance
Found a Steinhart ocean one titanium that checked all the boxes. Caught it at a time when the dollar was strong in the currency markets, so overall cost was reasonable enough to merit wearing at work.
I do still miss the spring loaded dive strap portion of the pelagos bracelet, I’ve never seen a better on yet, if you haven’t had a chance, stop into a watch shop and try it out. I keep looking for another manufacturer that builds something similar

The three watches with me in the RV at the moment are a Reactor Trident 2 Dive Watch, a limited edition (137 or of 250) Reactor Gryphon made for London Bridge and given to me by a Marine Corps buddy who was working for them a few years ago, and finally a Seiko know as "the Arnie" or H558 made famous as the watch Arnold wore in the 80's in movies like Predator and Terminator. Mine is the current generation in too much Kale green or maybe it's OD... I'm more of a utilitarian watch guy, I tend to be rough on them. The Reactors are great because the lugs are indestructible and the Tritium is ridiculously bright. The Arnie is a watch that I wanted since I was a kid and managed to pick one up a year or so ago for a decent price. I have more watches, but these are my go to daily wear watches at the moment. Naturally I have the basic color tones covered like all fashionable fellas... 63618

Depending on what I'm doing, I EDC a Glycine Airman or a Casio G-Shock Aviator. I prefer analog, though the Aviator does show the date & other info digitally. I have an older Citizen ProMaster dive watch & a Seiko "Turtle" from the 80's (Both are autos).

I have a
Victorinox watch I got for 15 years
100 year watch from the place I worked.
Citizen Promaster Hyper Aqualand dive watch I bought in 96 while in Okinawa. The software for downloading the dives was on 3.5 disks. For a Cpl $250 was a lot of money. Just looked and I can sell it for about what I paid for it.
The wife is going to get her Open Water and I am refreshing mine, so I sent the Promaster back to Citizen for a new battery and pressure test.

I have everything from 1800s Elgin and Waltham pocket watches to modern Casio pathfinder, Seiko automatic, to a number of Invictas. I wear the Casio in the field but my swiss made Invicta subaqua diver chrono is my daily wear.

Hardly ever wear anything but a garmin instinct.
-light weight
-flexible
-gps
-altimeter
-pressure and temperature sensors
-compatible with high quality HR monitors
(-gives alerts in case of pressure changes indicating rough weather)
-it also shows the time :-)
-shows sunset, sunrise, moonset, moonrise and twilight time (nice feature for hiking in the woods)
I might get one of those fashionable watches but merely as a tool to use for business/career purposes.

+1 on the Instinct. It's what I wear whenever I'm not wearing my Ares. Besides the features you mention, I specifically use the RUN and BIKE widgets... and the DOG TRACK widget to slave my Garmin Alpha 100 dog GPS receiver to the Instinct while bird hunting.

Lol awesome. Casio Ironman was my favorite working man's watch in the 90s then they came out with the Hummer version. That one disappeared off my body at some point.

Air King for nice, Seamaster for most days, and a G-Shock when I am running my business and have to do repairs and get dirty (and it shows).
I like simple, small, tough, analog watches.

Seiko SKX007 that is about 10 years old, swapped out the jinky/jingly bracelet for a Strapcode Oyster. Everyday
Casio G9000s Mudman Gshock
Hamilton Elvis80 Venura Automatic. Huge watch but it always heads to Vegas wish us and fancy outings
Omega Seamaster Bond 41mm 2220.80 automatic. Had the quartz mid-size but was able to flip and pick up this 41mm that is awesome. the other Vegas watch
had the Casio Gravitymaster and a Sunnto Core, but those went to the girlfriend's oldest son, since he's a gadget kind of kid
Had the Hamilton "Murph" and a Glycine Goldeneye, but flipped both for a profit when some firearms I wanted more came available

Bought a new watch and have been wearing it a couple days. Got a cheaper version just to see if I could tolerate it. It's been nice, wearing it daily other than at home and at cardiac rehab. Haven't worn one in probably 20 years on a regular basis. So far so good.

I have a son that's about to turn 16 next month. He's into watches a little, and has been collecting a few low cost watches (like off of Amazon and such, under $30-$50 at this point) as he kind of figures out what he likes. I never have been a watch guy, but I'm thinking about getting him one. May get myself one as well, just wondering what you fellas think about these? Shoot me straight fellas, I want to get the kid a genuine upgrade from what he's been buying, but I'm not buying him a graduation gift here. Although I can appreciate the young man's interest in finer things. I'm also looking at Luminox.

Of those four, I'd vote for the orange one. I wore an Orange Monster similar to that one for several years. Still one of my favorites. Google "Seiko Orange Monster" and you'll get several options.

That Seiko is not an “investment “ watch, but it is a great automatic movement that will last a LONG time. It’s not cheap, it’s also not expensive. It’s just right, so to speak. You might also spawn an interest in “modding” watches. Seiko moments are very customizable, should that turn out to be the “next hobby.”

Thank you for that. That's kind of what I was looking for. I'm thinking let's enter into the quality watch space with good quality, and go up from there if his/our interest grows. I went with a Citizen watch today from the local jeweler. I got matching ones, Citizen ProMaster Diver, 200m 63765
I liked the orange one as well, and we'll look at the Seiko's next if he's enthusiastic still.

My everyday watch is just a simple Timex Ironman. It's been durable and does what I need it to do.
One of my prized posessions, however, is my grandpa's 1967 Omega Chronosport that was handed down to me. I also have the original receipt ($180), box, instructions, and warranty card. I would like to have Omega service it as it doesn't work but I also dont want to compromise any value either, so I'm not sure what to do.

From Omega's website:
"OMEGA has a large stock of components for the restoration of ancient watches. The specialised watchmaker restores the original condition of worn components and in certain cases, refabricates missing parts by hand.
We return your restored timepiece in a special box along with the following documents:
- An attestation of restoration signed by the watchmaker in charge
- Before-after photos of the timepiece
- The extract of the archives corresponding to the watch (if available)
The result will amaze you !
Since the number of watchmakers capable to restore an ancient watch according to the OMEGA quality standard is limited, the work takes at least three months."
I'm guessing "The result will amaze you!" is a positive thing.

FWIW, I took similar advice when I inherited my father’s non-functioning Rolex. I took it to the Rolex building/office in downtown Dallas. They took 20-30 minutes to inspect it while I waited and brought me an itemized estimate. I released them to do the work and it took about 60 days. The watch was returned in a new case, a document detailing the work done, etc. This was a mid 80’s vintage watch. For something like this, or your Omega, my opinion is OEM repair is the way to go. Not sure I would trust Grandpa’s watch to “Bubba’s hair care, watch repair, and Tire center.” :)

Rolex Dayton stainless Zenith movement
