View Full Version : Possible big job change on the horizon

As some of you know, I've been in IT a long time (my day job) and have been in InfoSec over half of my career. I've been keeping this close to the vest but I thought I'd share with the tribe. A company in Houston has been heavily recruiting me to take over a VP of Information Security position. I rocked the interviews and now it's just the agonizing wait to decision day. I do know from the executive search firm that I'm the current frontrunner for the position. This is a huge move for me and would be a nice way to finish up my career.
If you could toss up a prayer, I'd appreciate it. Maybe that Masters in InfoSec will finally pay off.

That's awesome dude.
Yes. Guessing that's a residential move, too--about 180 miles or so.
Godspeed.

Primarily remote, some time at Corporate in Houston, some travel. We'll see how much initially.

Infosec is a good place to be!
I'm a senior engineer on a PAM product. No complaints.
I'll toss up some thoughts and sacrifice an intern to the software gods that you may be in their favor.

Make sure you use Kevin. He never can seem to catch up and drags the whole team down.:haha:

Do it bro. It was scary but I walked on a great job with a shit manager. After taking a year off I found an identical position with a new employer and a great team and manager. Hope it works out.

We hate Kevin he was my first pick :-p
Having some trouble now though
Dev tied him up but they're arguing over minutae like the knot they used and no one will approve it
QA is being overly critical and has logged 1,000,000 bugs for using inferior rope
UI/UX is yelling about rope color being slightly off and not perfectly coiled
At the last minute PM demanded we find a unicorn horn and shove it up Kevin's ass because "cUsToMeR eXpErIeNcE"
And management is constantly asking about time estimates.
By the time it's all done we will probably end up just sending him on a punitive coffee run and call it good.
But the though still counts right?

But for real. Congrats and best of luck. Good VPs are hard to find. (Almost as hard as unicorn horns). They'll be lucky to have you and I wish you the best.
(But not Kevin. Fuck that guy)

oh the joys of h-town traffic, prayers lifted for you brother. Im sure you know, but when you land this, spend a full day on surveillance of the traffic patterns around the office BEFORE you decide where to go home hunting. One mile either direction can mean a 45 minute difference in travel time. We moved our condo in houston when the comapny moved the office ( xo worls out of offices in several cities, but we kept a condo in houston for a couple of years). while the offices were equidistant from the condo, the travel time difference was over 30 minutes each way.
Dont trust the realtor to know this, they drive everywhere and dont really consoder the nightmare that is houston traffic. It rivals i35 austin traffic with the construction…….Only everywhere, one every loop and tollway.
Oh, and the Constable offices positively own all the tollways, so have a get out of jail free card, or dont push the speed limit on them, just friendly advice from someone in a mandated class with most of the constables in the state, and their discussions of how much traffic revenue drives their budget, specifically from houston, amd the tollways.

This is very true; I always seem to learn the hard way and have contributed more than my fair share of revenue from that damned tollway…

I would happily pay a monthly or annual premium to be ignored…… and I have a get out of jail free card lol. Sometimes the roadside chats are cool once we get past the prelims, but I would prefer the mdt to say “ignore this one , they paid the road tax already”. with lpr tech and digital plates this may very well become an option in the future.

Clearly you need to adopt an agile methodology. Get Kevin and another intern in this sprint, do A/B testing to see what the customer response is...

If you only have to be at the offices a coupon of times a week find a place an hour out past the edge of town and suck up the commute.
It’s what I did.
Now I went in every day by personal choice and even if I am not hitting the office I am constantly at client sites so I just deal.
my closest neighbor is on his own 1.5 acres about 60 yards away. Big open space park behind me and other neighbor to the north is maybe 70-75 yards.
5 miles outside a town of 4000 and another town of 5500 is 7-8 miles farther out and edge of civilization is a minimum of 20 miles away.

My wife used to work for Speedcast when they were still called Caprock. I used to work for ITC global which has a lot of ex Caprock/Speedcast people there. We still know a few people at Speedcast.
