Neither Ukraine nor Taiwan are MY problems. Nor the country's problem since they allowed the Senile Emarrasment to take office. America's only REAL danger lives in DC and if the US Mil wants to fight for freedom, they would encircle that place and contain THAT threat

Probably haven't watched the Olympics since Howard Cosell stopped reporting sports.... But if Vinko Bogataj makes a guest appearance I might tune it.

Not here either. I had heard they were starting somewhere around this time, saw the headlines about Pelosi’s “don’t speak bad about China while you’re here” speech to the athletes, but that’s it so far.

I feel kinda sorry for the athletes who've put in the hours and the work and are having their moment overshadowed by a bunch of fooking arseholes grandstanding and propagandizing.
Both our arseholes here in this country, and the arseholes running China.
But I have little interest in most of the sports, less than zero interest in watching the obligatory "what they overcame" stories, don't want to give whatever propaganda channel is making millions off this any more eyeballs, and in the end it's been 35 or more years since I've organized my life around what time something was being shown on television.
I wish the American athletes well. I hope every one of them has the absolute best performance of their lives.
But fuck China.

The Olympics lost whatever entertainment value for me since the Cold War era, where the Soviet bloc coaches, athletes and officials infected the games with unfettered corruption. Things have gotten worse since then, from Olympic committee corruption, to professional athletes running over amateurs, and now all the woke foolishness.

F*ck china and the left. I won't support it any of that.
Besides I always preferred to play sports rather than watch...
As for the athletes, yeah it kind of sucks for them but they have choices. Just like living in a blue-state... It might not be the choice they want but no one is forcing them.
Yeah, so far this admin and its Chinese overlords are delivering neither bread nor circuses.

Neither Ukraine nor Taiwan are MY problems.
*thread drift*
I oscillate between two views on this.
On the one hand:
Sometimes we should get involved in other peoples problems, because it's the right thing to do.
The Ukrainian people, for all intents and purposes, want to be autonomous and free. And a much larger, much stronger nation is about to simply seize them, and destroy their liberty - because it can (or for some megalomaniacal grand Russian unification wet dream Putin has).
Is that our problem? No, I guess not. But should we get involved?
Should France have stayed out of the American Revolution? That wasn't their problem.
Should the US have helped out in Europe in WWII?
Perhaps we should have left Korea to the red Chinese?
Was it right that we left Haiti to fight for it's independence against France, alone?
Is there no cause - aside from self-interest - worth fighting, maybe dying for? As Pres. Reagan asked, when did that begin?
When Christ took the cross?
Or perhaps our founders were fools - the problems of the patriots in Boston were, after all, not the problem of the patriots in Virginia.
Did our honored dead that died on the European front die in foolishness or vain?
Sometimes it's our responsibility, even if it's not our problem.
But then............
For every example of a justified intervention I can think of one that either didn't go so well, or where we shouldn't have been involved at all.
I think of the Founder's original intent - to have a tiny standing army, and a large, armed, trained citizenry (the militia), because they knew that with a large standing army the temptation would be too great to get embroiled in affairs just like this.
They certainly felt that the dangers of such military expeditions, despite good intentions, outweighed the costs of having your military also be your literal economic workforce (the militia) AND outweighed the cost of not being able to help in situations like this when they come. That speaks volumes.
And then.........
I think, "endorsing military support in Ukraine is tantamount to being willing to spend American money, sweat, and blood there."
How hypocritical, I think, it is, to be more open to intervention when it's someone else's blood on the line, and not mine.
So that brings me to the question. "If I endorse military support of Ukraine, would I be willing to go? Would I be willing to die for Ukrainian independence?"
"Would I send my son to do the same?"
The answer to both of those questions is a resounding no.
And so I come to the same conclusion as Gabe. Though I do empathize with the Ukrainians, I would not be willing to spill my blood or that of my children to keep them free; therefore I cannot in good conscience hold a view that would require someone else to do so in my place.
The answer to Reagan's question is that yes, there are some things worth dying for. But to me, this is not one of them.

What sucks is that I LOVE the Olympics, or really seeing any humans do things at the highest level. It's incredible.
But I've really soured on the Olympic experience lately. Will likely watch zero of the Winter Games.
So much respect for all those athletes who train so hard to reach the pinnacle of their sport.
Sucks that the experience has gotten so crappy.

Ratings for Beijing Olympics tank; 2022 opening ceremony hit all-time low in TV viewership
Thus far, the 2022 Beijing Olympics have been an absolute flop. The ratings for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics hit all-time lows.
On Saturday, NBC Sports revealed that Friday’s full-day opening ceremony coverage averaged "nearly 14 million TV-only viewers."
The viewership plunged 43% from the opening ceremony for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, which had 23.8 million people watching the international sporting event.
"The previous low over the last three decades was the 1992 Barcelona games, which had 21.6 million viewers," noted The Wrap which added, "The high watermark for an opening ceremony was the London Games in 2012, when more than 40 million tuned into NBC’s tape-delayed coverage."
Deadline reported, "A paltry 8.7 million tuned in on NBC in primetime see the pre-taped Mike Tirico and Savannah Guthrie-led coverage of the propaganda-heavy spectacle put on by Chinese President Xi Jinping and filmmaker Zhang Yimou."
The coveted advertising demographic of adults ages 18-49 averaged only a 1.2 rating, plunging 68% from 2018 (3.7) and plummeting 80% from 2014 (6.0), Sports Media Watch reported, adding, "The rating in adults 18-34 was a mere 0.7, down 73% from ’18 (2.6)."
The disastrous ratings are crippling news for NBCUniversal. In 2014, NBCUniversal paid a whopping $7.75 billion to the International Olympic Committee for the broadcast rights to the Olympic Games from 2021 through 2032. "The deal covers six Olympics, from 2021 to 2032, and gives NBC rights to all media platforms including TV, internet and mobile," according to USA Today. Previously, NBC paid $4.4 billion for four Olympics between 2011 and 2020.
A Morning Consult poll taken a week before the Beijing Olympics asked more than 2,000 American adults why they wouldn't be watching the 2022 Winter Games.
The most common reasons people gave as to why they weren't watching the Beijing Games was a lack of interest in the events (65%) and no interest in the athletes (57%).
There was 40% of Americans who said they weren't watching the Winter Olympics is because it was hosted by China.
Of the people polled, 57% of Democrats said they planned to watch some of the Beijing Olympics, compared to 40% of Republicans and 35% of independents.
Many conservatives are boycotting the
Beijing Olympics over China's human rights record. On Twitter, the hashtag #GenocideGames has trended in recent days in reference to the Chinese Communist Party's abuse of Uyghurs, which includes a reported million Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang internment camps.

I do agree with Anthony. I respect the dedication and hard work it took for the athletes just to get there. I like the idea of the olympics.

The Olympics have sucked for decades. I blame Reagan.
Cold War Olympics were awesome. We won gold! Take that you commie bastards! It also provided some interesting drinking games. Drink every time you see an Adam's apple on a female East German gymnast.
Then Reagan had to go win the Cold War and fuck up the Olympics.

I'm going to guess there was some under the table financial compensation from the PRC.

Another thing is he may not have qualified in the us.... After 96 Olympics they had a couple Canadian dual citizens come over the the US hockey program because they were talking about LA again in 2000. That could be the reason... Plus at that time our Jr teams were getting better then theirs....
