My son just recently returned from his first military deployment, during which he began an appreciation for smoking cigars with his fellow soldiers during this trip.

He also expressed an interest in smoking a pipe to me, unfortunately I have no knowledge of such things. I would like to get him a pipe, one that is exceptional and worthy of a warrior.

If you smoke a pipe or are knowledgeable about such things I would greatly appreciate your recommendations.

Thank you gentlemen

Jake

Ive smoked pipes in the field quite a lot. Theyre nice because you can kind of show off, packing the pipe and looking dapper af. At least to me. You can put it out quickly, and only put in the smoke you have time for.

Mesh filters are money, bit cheap af. Definitely improve the draw.

Ive broken several pipes. Cob pipes, wooden, they break if you handle them rough. I have real nice ones, but the shape of them is purely about asthetics and how it places pressure against your lips and teeth and if you do or dont like it, so it depends on him.

A super nice ZIPPO, a real good one, is what I like. I have a nice engraved one with a La Santa Muerte skull face. I ALWAYS have a lighter.

Dont forget the o-ring so the fuel isnt constantly evaporating.

Damn! If you had asked this back in the 70/80's I could provide some info, but have forgotten most/all of it! My dad was a big time pipe smoker for years, but I also think it's been many years since he has used them. But he had a decent little collection of pipes, probably about a dozen or so. My favorite ones out of his collection were made of who knows what, but they started out white and would gradually turn to various shades of brown as he used them. Yeah, maybe that pointed out that it wasn't good for your lungs, but it did create a custom piece over time. Every couple of months or so we would go to some pipe shop in San Diego for him to pick up tobacco and occasionally he would get a pipe too. It was still fun for me since I did enjoy smelling the different blends and sometimes got hooked up with some snuff (different times!). The shop was also fun since they had a pool table and dart boards since they sold game room type stuff too, so I got to play around a little.

My mom was also a pipe smoker for a little while, but it was just to piss off her co-workers. Back in the day when you could smoke inside at work and there were smoking/non-smoking sections, she worked in the call center for San Diego Gas & Electric. Even though she sat in the non-smoking section of the call center, that magical barrier was about as effective as a gun-free zone sign and she would be coughing and hacking all day. So she decided to get a pipe, sit in the smoking sections, and tear that place up like a locomotive with her pipe. That didn't sit too well with the cig smokers, however there was no rule as to what you could/couldn't smoke in the smoking section. Shortly after this the smoking section had a wall put up to separate the two areas so she could go back to the smoke free environment.

Peterson system pipe, from Dublin, Ireland... the "system" is an angled vent that smokes a littler cooler, and reduces tongue burn.
Zippo makes pipe inserts that allow flames from the side... easier to light with a pipe zippo.
OR go for an ornate meerschaum pipe.. sky is the limit with them!

Meerschaum is the material you recall aging from white to yellow. There are some incredible art-pipes carved from meerschaum, but it is fragile.

Google up some pipe making vids, you may find you can make your own. Estate pipes can be good deals too.

I have a vintage Veeja I’ve had for decades. It’s a great “woods” pipe, as the stem removes and clips to the bowl, compact storage. A nice piece of briar.

Just looked up meerschaum and that looks like it! I do remember my dad saying it was pretty fragile and not to touch it with you hands either. Also looked to see if the shop we went to was still open, and it is! https://libertytobacco.com
