Been a year since becoming a civilian.

A year ago I turned in the badge. Went to work for a civilian company in a completely new field. Relocated to Texas last summer and life is great. My wife is happy, I'm happy and life is good. I wasn't sure how this would go because I have worn some type of uniform my whole life. I was on the fence for 18 months. I am so glad I did it.

Depending on the gig, I bet it will be nice not to be working/on call for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years ;) Good on Ya brother!

I’ve been thinking along these same lines for quite some time. About 26 years in so far and each passing day brings more of a desire to get out. Maybe it’s time for me to get out and have an actual life. Glad to hear you made the right choice!

When you are questioning the job and it doesnt hold the same value to you (that doesnt correct in six months to a year), its time to go to your exit strategy.

I've had those moments, sometimes due to poor leadership (it changed and got better), sometimes due to pending legislation (it didnt pass, reassuring me that folks still side overall with LE), sometimes due to what we see on the job (If I left, would are the young ones prepared to step in yet). In each case, within the year I found that I WANTED to stay. The year I dont, I will cash in my chips and see what the next challenge brings.

As much as we love it, remember, a year after youre gone, the majority wont remember you, save for the nuggets you gave the special few.

Couldn't stay without coming in off the road for an extended period. Not what I signed on for. Some here may remember the daily countdown in my signature line--"...and a wake-up."
Much as you love the job, you have to remember that the clock is ticking.
Dealt with a newbie responding to a call at my res this AM. Asked him what his call sign was.
