OK, like it says in the title. For those of you who have been around long enough to remember Gabe et al talking about “bon vivant...”
Unlike many last minute buyers, I have a metric ton of mags, lowers, ammo, etc., including some for guns I don’t own but might one day. I know many of you are the same. The bulk of these are new as in “still in wrapper.” That said, I’ve been laying in more when I find “mostly normal” prices.
I don’t like my collection of cardboard boxes as a storage system for these. They’re getting out of hand.
Talk to me about how you are organizing these. Clear plastic containers with lids? Small? Large? Good shelf systems? Maybe something purpose built? Milsurp ammo cans? Feels like there is a better way to do it and some of you already have.

I am currently using large tubs in Gorilla Shelves. Once the basement reloading room is finished we will be building in permanent shelving where the Gorilla Shelves are and I will continue to use large tubs.
Everyone has enough magazines stored to fill large tubs right?

I wish. Little late to that game, sadly, but rectifying that issue.

Most of my mags are filled and saved in ammo cans as a space saver. I like the n463 fuse ammo cans. Like a .50 can but taller. An AR mag will stand up with some space above to lay a couple more on top. They also work well for bandoleers. I don't know how many fit in one beyond "a lot". I got a bunch of repack kits back in the day to consolidate a lot of loose .308 I had. Did something similar with loose 5.56 but I just put them on stripper clips and stacked them. I also have a bunch of NIW Pmags just hang out in a smaller box that are left overs.
I do know someone that has a few k of mags and they are in a mix of boxes and totes. Totes would be the better long term option for a huge bulk of mags because they won't buckle under the weight of the mags as easily as cardboard. Another option could be heavy duty cardboard boxes. Depending on your space adding shelves is always a great idea vs. just stacking things in the basement.

HUGE personal fan of the HDX totes from HomeDespot, the 5 gal one is about perfect for mags & parts on a per rifle basis. The Magpul Daka Takeout is amazing for smaller piles of pistol or rifle mags that are being stashed in places where they'd otherwise get dusty, wet etc.

MTM Case-Gard makes ammo cans and 3, 4 and 5 ammo can holders that nest....as well as other compatible containers...including ones you can bury:

If you are worried about burying mags then I think you have missed the entire point of WattiorTalk.

Those gun lockers that nobody in their right mine buys to put their guns in make great storage lockers for mags, ammo, etc. Work great if you bolt them to the studs in the wall behind them. I expect the rising value not just of guns but mags and ammo will attract/inspire burglaries.

If the magazines are unloaded, even in factory wrap I use 40mm USGI ammo cans. They stack well when you have more than a few....

I do need to arrange my armory also. And most important make a record of what and where everything is so you can find it and that includes parts.
There are for me three major issues. Security. safety. and proper environmental storage.
Security: A neighbor last month had 10,000 large rifle primers stolen from his unsecured garage. At current pricing the replacement cost is in excess of $1,000 assuming you can find them at that pricing. I think most of us are aware of the need for security.
Safety (I hold retired Certified Safety Professional (CSP): for this think fire and large stocks of powder, primers, and loaded ammunition. Firemen hear rounds popping off and they may not effectively fight the fire.
Environmental conditions (Climate Control): I know people that store such things in sheds, etc. that have no climate control. High temperatures can degrade powder and loaded ammunition. Firearms are obviously sensitive to humidity and salt air. If you live in flood prone areas take that into account. The basement if you have one is not a good idea in areas that flood.
The only reason for stashing firearms currently would be to deal with a surprise red flag action.

I just use a medium size Plano sportsman trunk. They’re fairly tough, look good, inexpensive, stack well and hold lots of gear. I have one for just mags, and another for nylon gear and holsters. https://www.planomolding.com/shop/storage/sportsman-s-trunk-medium-o-d-green

Metal cabinets that lock, northern tool supply has stuff, More guns safes, vault room, I took a couple of rope or jockey box from our old business and welded tabs and shelves in them. They are heavy gage(14) or thicker and I didn’t pay a dime for them.... Bolt to the floor like a gun safe if you want. Build a room in the garage with no window or bar them from the inside... I could think of lots of ways to safely secure stuff.... Shelving, I make my own out of wood, but I’m sure there are some nice options available out of Home Depot or Lowe’s....

I’m still trying to figure out how having a bunch of magazines is any kind of increased security risk over and above that of being a normal gun owner???
Seriously. What on the Chicken Little fuckery is this? Do people think this really increases risk of theft?
Burglar breaks in:
“Look there are guns
and ammo everywhere. I better take those magazines cause they are worth far more money and much lighter and more portable and less bulky than those guns over there”.
Sounds plausible to me.
Jesus I’m going to go do pushups before a certain “expert on everything” give me an aneurism.

Ammo cans and those square plastic milk crates (marked “property of...”. :) )
Both stack well.
Add to that simple 2x and 1/2” ply shelving.
I’ve found these work well for all manner of goods.

I find it amazing how simple solutions work.
You should probable assign them serial numbers and them make a spreadsheet listing their values and update that monthly based on market fluctuations. You should also provide that list to your insurance company so they can charge you appropriately.

Why the stressed out reaction? Guns locked in safe, ammo and mags locked in cabinets, all sounds reasonable to me.
If a guy has a nice collection of firearms locked in a safe but there's a couple of hundred magazines and a few dozen ammo cans just laying around, yeah, that's fast money for a frantic person ransacking the house for whatever he/she can carry off. Mags are convenient to stick a backpack or in the case of the ammo in cans, grab the handle and scoot. No serial numbers, easy to sell or trade at a flea market or gun show.
During the 10 year Clinton ban "high capacity" aka regular capacity mags aka anything more than 10-rounds for Glocks would cost up to $100 apiece. SIG 226 and M17 mags cost $50+ now, imagine what they're gonna cost when new sales are prohibited by law. Plus, 9mm is going for 50 cents a round now, .556 and *gasp!* 7.69x39 for much the same? Tell me there's no value there for a thief.
Me? I'm not going to worry about replacing irreplaceable gear when prevention is cheap.
To each their own.

How long will it take to cart all that stuff to a vehicle?
Me? I’m going to worry about other possibilities in a robbery.
I’ll let the betas worry about the inconsequential.

I learned a long time ago that some people do the doing, while others do the talking. You seem to be doing a lot of talking bro.
ETA: May not be the case, but you're giving me the "keyboard commando" vibe with all the bravado.
