Current laptop is maybe 8 years old and about to take a dirt nap - keyboard is starting to go , track pad is kaput , hinges are about to go.

I'm cheap SOB for things like laptop - it's really just a terminal that allows me to vpn to work (several hours per day in current plandemic state )

I see some what appear to be good values at "Amazon Renewed Store" - seem to be business turn in that are renewed - anyone ever go this route?

Thanks gents

Always bought mine new. Can't comment on the Amazon.

point well taken - since I'll keep the damn thing 8 years or more should just buy the damn thing new and be done

I would buy new if I was using it for work. Older ones might not have what it takes for video chats, zoom etc. Also you get a warranty

Depends on the specs. A lot of the time machines get returned because there is a bad part or the customer just didn't like it. Sometimes its an exchange program. They can't sell it as new at that point either way. If the laptop spec are better than what you are using now it could be worth a shot.

Ugh, if you spend that much time on it for work, why would you not buy something new? Used shit like that isn’t worth the potential headaches. Of course that’s not to say a brand new one couldn’t have issues, but there is definitely less of a chance with new.

Laptop prices are down. There is no reason (ever) to buy used.

I've bought a few that way and have had great experiences. Stick to the good names and get one generation behind the latest processors.

I've bought quite a bit of "renewed" stuff from Amazon over the years, and can't think of anything that was bad out of the box.

But it's always going to be a tossup.

One of my desktops is a Dell performance workstation built in 2007. It's not the fastest thing any more (it's only an 8 core Xeon with 24 gig of ram), but it's what I'm typing this on. I bought it used from a place in St. Louis in 2010. I've got another Dell that I bought off Ebay in 2009 when I was in Iraq, and my Lenovo died on me (after only 4 years).

My other desktop is one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MSZTD8N that I bought in July when my 5 year old low end laptop appeared to be dying (I managed to replace the cooing fan on it. Mostly). I stuffed 16 gig of ram in it, and a SSD drive, and it runs Windows 10 well enough for my uses.

Work sent me a 2015 MacBook Pro. It's pretty nice too.

So no, I've never bought a renewed computer off Amazon, but I've bought used computer stuff before. It helps if you know how to fix it.

That said, frankly buying a new Dell from their Lattiude line, well, it's going to last you a *long* time and when you amortize a thousand bucks over 6 or 8 years, it's really not that much.

Just to circle back - I got a Dell Latitude 14 Rugged refurbished from NewEgg - less than half the price of new and it's flawless.

The battery on this thing is a beast 6 hours and still 35% charge

Haven’t bought any Amazon Renewed, but have bought several refurbished laptops from the Apple website with complete satisfaction. Pricing usually runs about 15% off new for a current model.
