Finally had to put Ruger down. His hip gave out at age 8, exaccerbated by poor nutrition from EPI. (Search "Sick Dog Help) Have a female GSD pup coming in a couple of weeks, will be 8 wks old then, can't get wife to wait any longer.
Need a good female name, can come up with male names, not much luck w/ female.
Thanks,
Bob
Freya, Rita, Lupe (Lou, Loopy, Lupita depending on how pissed you are at her).
Very sorry about Ruger. He looked like a good old boy.

Look at the dog and the circumstances under which you obtained it and then come up with a name. Of my two females, one came with the name ginger because of the ginger colored like ticking that she has all over. The other was named Memphis by me since while I picked her up in cold water, Mississippi the large city of Memphis, TN was only a couple of more exits up on I-55 and it seems like a good name.
It is your dog and you should be able to come up with the right name for it because it will be you that will be using it.

Not Bella.
Last time I took my MIL's GSD bitch to the vet, when the tech came out and called for her, two other people started to get up with their females of the same name.
I met a county mounty K9 handler last week with a GSD/Mal cross bitch named Valkyrie, Val for short. Really liked that for a shepherd bitch.
Gert -- short for Gertrude. It's female and it's German.

I like Ripley but it sounds kinda masculine, Valkyrie's good as is Gert. All my previous dogs pretty much got their names as barnetmill says. I'll keep you posted.

A little veterinary advice...
GSD tend to be neurotic, fearful sissies. They’ve been grossly overbred and unless you search out some really good stock you’ll end up with a 60 lb anxious, chihuahua. Taking these guys from mom too soon really contributes to their anxiety in life. I’d leave her with mom as long as the breeder will let you.
After that make sure she is really well socialized.
A good GSD is an amazing dog (except for the massive shedding). A bad one is a miserable experience.
I have only one GSD in my practice that I have any use at all for. Her name is Betty...truly amazing dog. You should name yours Betty to hedge your bets. :0)

Ha! Mine are neurotic fearless velcro dogs. The female is a rescue, the male's mom and pop were Schutzhund, dad a champion. Very strong prey drives, and since there is little contact with other dogs beside our rescue Lab, socialization is a major problem. Plus one on that!

That's a good point about GSDs being over-bred. I had an Army Veterinarian tell me that was because of the AKC's interpretation of what a GSD should look like, and US breeders working to that end. Her recommendation was that if you wanted a 'real' German Shepherd, then you needed to get one from a European breeder.

i would want to know the line that a particular breeder has put out. The thing about GSD is not over bred, but poorly bred as mentioned to stupid show specifications and a general dumbing down of the breed.
At one time the GSD was closely related to herding dogs of the mountain that were often white. There people that prefer the white GSD that are not considered show ring correct.
The White Shepherd is a variety of the German Shepherd (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Shepherd) bred in the United States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). White coated German Shepherds have been known in Europe as early as 1882, in 1933 the breed’s standard was amended in their native Germany (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany), banning white coated dogs from registration.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Shepherd#cite_note-Morris-1)[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Shepherd#cite_note-Pickeral-2) In the United States and Canada (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada) the coloration had gained a following and in 1969 a breed club was formed specifically for white coloured German Shepherds, calling their variety the White Shepherd.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Shepherd#cite_note-Morris-1)[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Shepherd#cite_note-Pickeral-2) The variety is recognized as a separate breed by the United Kennel Club (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kennel_Club).[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Shepherd#cite_note-Pickeral-2)

Yup. The dog show industry has turned all dogs into something less than they were 100 years ago. In the good old days, dogs were expected to perform well to be bred and further the breed. Now they just have to be pretty.
And when I say "overbred" I also mean that, like all popular breeds, the backyard and puppy mill breeders have flooded the world with crappy dogs. Many a breed has been destroyed by morons making a quick buck. Sort of like what has happened to the gun industry. Huge demand by folks unwilling to pay for quality promotes production of poor products.
Find the Gabe Suarez of GSD breeders and you'll get a great dog...but you'll have to pay for it.

About two years ago were tied up in traffic jam caused by road construction in Tallahassee, FL. There was local LEO nearby with GSD K9. We got to talking to him and his dog cost the department about $9,000. It came from some special kennel in Europe and IIRC with a guarantee. Training was not to be started until it was IIRC about a year old.
I do not want a K9 dog, but I would pay 10K to get a dog that was as smart as one of those and trainable. I just do not want the drive. Every so often there is an exceptional dog in any breed. Thing to do is breed exceptional dogs and be very selective about which of the offspring get bred and eventually one can get a good line of dogs.
All that joe and jane blowhard want is a big dog that wags its tail.

I obviously need to watch more movies & TV! Keep 'em coming!
Shepherds from Eastern Europe were spared the butchering from the western show ring.

Xena at 4.5 years is neither timid nor neurotic. Nothing is half-way with her. Scary smart and very loving with those she knows.

Well, picked the pup up Friday evening. She's 8 wks old and 15lbs. Would have liked to have left her longer w/ parents and sibs, but now there's only one sib w/the parents anyway. We were thinking of naming her Rebel, SWMBO liked it. Put her on lead and started toward the truck, she went about 5' and hit the brakes. I finally had to pick her up and carry her; Rebel it is!
Arrived home, turned Shadow out into the yard, got Rebel out of the crate and introduced them. Shadow sniffed her thoroughly and walked off. Rebel just curled up at my feet. She seems to be adapting well, though she and the kittens haven't really buddied up yet.
After only 48 hrs w/her I think she's gonna be easily trainable. No housebreaking problems, so far, but I've always found that easy when bringing a dog in with an older dog. Here's hoping.
Got a couple pics on my phone and a couple on a SD card but stuck now. Used to use Photobucket when it was free, been awhile.

I do not use photobucket because it is not free and I do not want anyone possessing my files.
Download the pictures to your computer. Hit the photo inserting icon on the forum. Select from your computer. Hit browse and find the downloaded pictures on the downloading file and hit upload and your photo should appear in your post. I am not computer literate, but even I can manage to do it. Usually the copy and paste function does not work for me on this forum as it does on others. But if you know the internet locations for an image you can often post using that.

Check file format of the downloaded picture that it is compatible with the forum downloading soft ware. It is is not, often you can re-save it as a jpeg that should be good to go.

Super cute! You will have a great dog there I’m sure. I echo socialize, enjoy it all and let her interests and drives shape your adventures.
I am a malinois guy and probably one of the annoying (my dog is crazy like me ones) haha. I use to say the old “when I get old and slow I will get a gsd “ well my current partner is a Czech gsd/malinois cross and looks very gsd he is a freaking freight train love love my big shepinois bastard!

60664Not a great pic, but it was 12 degrees w/ a brisk wind this AM. That's Shadow (AKA: Chubs, 100+ lbs). WE had about 5" of snow which doesn't phase either one.
They wrestle something awful; Shadow will grab her neck or ear and she'll squall like hell, he'll turn away and she'll grab his back leg!
