View Full Version : The Illinois State Police are idiots!

I'm not talking about our awesome troopers patrolling the streets and highways - any contacts I've ever had with them has always been professional and top-notch. I mean the ISP management/bureaucracy. Here's what's going on.
I moved from one suburb in the Chicago area to one further from the city. Much nicer place. Anyway, in Illinois you have to update your new address for your FOID, CCW and Instructor licenses all at once (you update the CCW and it covers everything else...for $80!). Problem is, the website does not work. The drop-down menus don't function on Windows 8 or 10, using the Opera, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer browsers. The site warns not to use your cell phone or tablet because it will cause an error. The website is BROKEN and does not function.
So I can't renew online. They don't allow you to mail it in.You can't drive to any ISP station and pay it. And if you try calling in the phone, morning noon or night, you get a recorded message saying they have heavy call volume and to call back another time before it disconnects the phone. I'm really getting tired of these fucking slackers that seem to have infested the upper levels of every company or government organization I have to deal with. So I used the contact form to email then and explain the problem. No answer. I pressed 5 or 6 or whatever number on one call to be connected to the "LAW ENFORCEMENT ONLY!" line, and left a polite message explaining that no, I'm not LE, but I am armed security and an instructor with a serious problem because there is no way for me to change my address and I'm at risk of losing my license and can they please forward the message or have SOMEONE call me. So far, no response. I called the state rep and he suggested reaching the senator because it's a state issue. Left the senator and governor's office a message asking them to intervene.
Aside from moving out of Illinois (I'd love nothing more, but realistically not possible right now), any thoughts or ideas what to do? I believe the state is too incompetent to catch it if my CCW and DL don't have matching addresses, but if I get pulled over, will the police know it doesn't match, and if so what are they going to say about that? This is a pretty serious issue because I could lose my CCW license AND my instructor certification. Any ideas? I'm about to search for an attorney to file a lawsuit, but who knows if that's an option. Don't have that kind of money, so I'd have to find some 2nd Amendment champion lawyer.
This is fucking insane!

Is the site super old? You might try Internet Explorer and use the emulation feature in IE Developer Tools to try the site in older version of IE. Open the site and hit F12. In the tool panel that opens, click the Emulation tab. Change the Document Mode and User Agent String settings to try and emulate older versions of IE. Also, try disabling any privacy browsers add ons you might be running.

Maybe you can not leave Illinois, but if you are still living in Cook County it would be better get out of it.

Thanks. I'll check if my IE has that option, though I doubt it'll work. The site is just broken.

I dont know if it is possible in the US but have you tried a registered letter listing the issues you have encountered? Keep a copy yourself and the receipt from the post office to show any LEO you may encounter before you get the situation resolved.
There was a system before the internet.

I had a problem with getting my FOID back within the mandated 30 days once. The (then) current one was about to expire. I had applied with plenty of time to spare, but they were behind due to cuts. With about one week before expiration, I called the state police non-emergency number.
A trooper answered, and gave his name and rank. These calls are recorded. I explained my problem to the trooper. He told me if my card did not arrive before the old one expired, not to take any guns outside of my house.
ME: So, you are telling me it is legal for me to have guns in my possession without a valid FOID card?
My card showed up in about 3 days.

Had a very similar issue trying to renew my ccw - which was not renewed in time.
Took hours to get through to a person, who was amazingly helpful. There has also been a data crash and lost data!!!!
I still cannot access the system properly, but have another 5 years to keep trying. What a fuster cluck!!!

It reminds me of NJ. I moved from one town to the other amd if we dont update our address (which means going through the whole process again) within 30 days we can be imprisoned. The cops would not give me an appointment within that window to come in and update. Guys in free states, dont take your freedom for granted.

Sent you a PM on some things to do. Hate to tell you but your story is the rule not the exception! You will NEVER get them to answer the phone. Main problem is per law there are not penalties on THEM for not doing their jobs or doing it with in the time frame listed in the law.

Got it, thanks!
3Corners, that's not a bad idea. I think I'll do that. At this point, I think nothing less than a class action lawsuit and lots of bad publicity is going to get them off their fat lazy asses and make them do their damned jobs.

I never posted it but i started a good thread about why good people hate cops. The was pre-Mugabe and Polish lives matter.
The problem is rank-in-file sucking up to Brass. Pick one ----25 MPH Limit on open road. The rosary on your mirror obstructs vision --- the ash from your smoke is "Littering"
Brass ain't worth the powder and lead. You guys who have a "UNION" could be real men and say citizens are not the enemy. In my day citizens four big times and a dozen "standing by yous" helped. Today because of some "commuter tax scheme" and searching homes and vehicles with cutting tools got fashionable. It is out of hand and only you guys banding together mean hands on help or somebody who got screwed posting your murder to facebook.

Its also possible that they make the site hard to use on purpose. It is Illinois after all.

Boy, I sure am glad I no longer live in that SHIT-HOLE state.

Calling Illinois a shit hole is an understatement. More like the stinking unwashed ass crack of the country. But then again, downstate is far different than the northern end where all the idiots, democrats, liberals and minorities congregate.

I considered that, especially since last time I had to use it, it worked. But honestly, I think the bureaucrats in Illinois are too fucking stupid to make the site purposely not work. I can't give them that much credit. It would mean taking the time to figure out how to disable just a few drop down menus, then taking the time to actually do it. No, I think we can chalk this up to pure incompetence and laziness.

I’d have to look it up, but IL amended the law to clarify that if you applied to renew your CHL online and hadn’t received a new card before the current one expired, your current (expired) license was still good until you got your new card (or got your renewal denied, in which case you’re SOL either way). I actually printed it out and carried it with me.
And previously, when you updated your address for your FOID online, they didn’t send a new card. I’ve lived at my current home for 7 years, it’s still got my old address on my FOID. But when I renewed my CHL, I got a new FOID with the correct address a couple days later without having asked for it.
As far as any other licensing, I wouldn’t know.
Also try Microsoft Edge (it’s basically the new IE). Firefox and Chrome locked up on me but I completed my renewal with Edge. You should have it if you’ve got Windows 10.

Thanks, I'll look into that amendment. But I've tried Google Chrome, IE, Firefox, Opera, and MS Edge on both Windows 10 and Windows 8. The site is simply broken. The site warns not to use an Android phone or tablet or iPhone because it can cause rejection errors. Insane!

I’m no big city lawyer, but several other outlets report the same thing. Again, this applies only to your CHL.
