I'm going to be spending ten days in the Tbilisi area the first part of July, but I've never been there and don't speak the language (though I'm going to try to pick up some between now and then). Anyone here been there? I'd like to get some information about the area that isn't from backpacking hostel dwellers.

Was there in the early/mid '90s in a professional capacity for a few weeks on a couple of occasions. Nothing much to tell really. Beautiful geography and older architecture, food is good, and everything is definitely on the inexpensive side, I imagine even to this day. As with all second world "big" cities, keep an eye out for low level criminals and scams. Unless you know whom you're dealing with, try to keep to official channels.
As far as the Georgian language goes, a lot of people also speak Russian, if that's easier for you. Though, they would certainly appreciate it if you learned a few common words and phrases in Kartvelian as it shows respect for their culture as separate from the Russians.
