Went in to check blood pressure and the doc decides to lift up the back part of my shirt to do the whole stethoscope/take a deep breath thing as I was sitting there. Carrying IWB at the 4 o'clock...Caught me off guard and probably him too...he didn't say anything about it but the whole deal about telling/not telling one's doctor if you own firearms or not is not on the table for me now.

My old GP was a retired SF Flight surgeon, only thing he ever said was. "hey bro, can your throw your shirt on top of your gun when you put it on the chair? A couple of the new nurses freaked out".

By the time a doc sees me my occupation is known, and since the complaint is often work-related I don't sweat this.

If I'm ever told to disarm because the doc doesn't feel "comfortable" around firearms I'll leave. We can't do business.

Yeah...I figured if he went negative I'd be going elsewhere...the fact that he didn't react at all can be taken either way. If he'd have had a positive reaction I'd be more at ease though.

In Ill Annoyz you cannot carry (even with ccw) into a medical facility - state law. So - I always make sure I leave my holster and mag carriers on after locking the pistol & mags in the truck. Forces a discussion with the docs, NPs and techs so that I get a better idea of who I'm dealing with. Kind of a teaching moment, so to speak:). When they realize I'm a professor/forensic consultant and not a bubba - it opens a lot of communication that otherwise might not happen.

I assume the waist area will be seen and generally go with a pocket carry or have one in my jacket from the car into the office!

True story:

When I was in Jr Hi my Dad's insurance suddenly covered dental. The only dentist in 10 miles treated me and all of my friends who now had dental insurance. Would you not know it we suddenly had "little surface cavities" that needed a filling. No need for old style Novocaine that took 20 minutes to work. I showed up with a real cavity that should have been Novacained and the prick was in a hurry. He hit a nerve and I hit him. In Jr Hi I was pushing 6 feet tall and almost 200 pounds. I knocked him pretty good from a seated position.

Time lapses and I still treat with him as the only local dentist.

I am now a cop working nitewatch 12-8. I have an 08:30 appointment and go in uniform. He says there is no way I am treating you wearing a gun belt.

I took it off and dumped the rounds. and sat there on my BUG.

The last time I went for an examination, I dropped the gun into a fanny pack. I was in a suit, so it wouldn’t have taken a genius to guess what the bag held. But everyone just politely ignored it.

None of my doctors or dentists care. They all know what I do and would rather have me there if ever needed rather than not.

Appreciate all the feedback...on the one hand I'm mad at myself for not thinking this through to begin with and on the other hand for thinking I should even have to think about leaving it behind...it's not going to do me any good locked up in the car if SHTF while I'm in his office.

This is how I deal with it, too. No reason anyone needs to know. Also works for massage and chiro appt's. For dentist appt's, I typically don't divert from my normal AIWB EDC routine.

Thank God I live in one of the last bastions of manhood and freedom in the USA. I had my elbow done last year. It was a local (that in itself is a great story). I was awake through the whole deal and my doc and I talked guns and shooting bad guys during the one hour nerve transpo. He was wearing a Glock 43 under the scrubs.

Went in for an allergy shot recently. The kind that goes into the buttcheek. Doc says, "Just drop the blaster and mags on the chair there", as he loads the needle. I must say that if a doc I went to made the whole "yuk...I hate guns" thing, I would likely get up, call him a big fat pussy, and walk out. Lots of docs in the world.

Yeah pretty much exactly except massage since I hang my clothes on a hook I go EDC there too! She’s the wife of my FFL so likely not an issue regardless!

Smart dentist. Either that or cuff you to the chair.

A few years back I had a spot of skin cancer removed from my scalp. I went back to get the stiches out and the doc asks me if I'm related to a holster manufacturer because of my last name. I say know, I wish I was and he pulls his pants leg up and shows me a revolver in an ankle holster. I laughed and said I'd have had mine on as well but had just come from work. I was happily surprised to say the least.

My now retired PCP once told me his 32 ACP was jamming ( he decided to shoot at a snake at his cabin) and wanted me to fix it. It was an old Colt. It was suffering from pocket lint. I cleaned it and ran a box without issue. It probably is full of pocket lint again.

Interesting thread, I once had a doc refuse to remove an ingrown toenail because I had a shoulder rig(plain clothes duty) on, she said I am not going to cause you any pain or touch you while your wearing that thing ....If I was smart I would have said this is incentive to be carefull! I also disliked it when I would bring my kids to the docs and and one of the questions they asked the kids was "do you have guns in the house". I was very proud when my 7 year old said that wasnt any of her business!! I flipped a gord on that one, they said that was standard proceedure to evaluate dangers for those in the house! Lately they are asking everyone if you suffer from depression .... I said Im here for a flue shot where do you get off asking that ? The nurse was not happy with my response and was offened that I didnt comply with a response she felt was appropriate. The medical profession feels they can controll you life!

My Medical provider and I have spilled blood and giggled at incoming tracer fire together in years past. So I don't worry about such things.

Mine lifted the back of my sweatshirt once to use the stethoscope and saw my double mag pouch. He said “think you’ve got enough clips?” My wife used to see another doc in the same practice who would always ask her if I’d got any new guns etc before he’d get into her issues. They are both members of the local gun club. They sold the practice to a corporation that then sent “no gun” signs. They ended up buying it back and taking down the signs.

A bit over a year ago I was having some (a lot) skipped beats or PVCs. Nurses dragged the EKG machine and told me to unload keys, cell phone, pocket knife and any other metal. Pulled the G26 out in the IWB holster and handed to the nearest nurse. She kinda recoiled. " Just take the damned thing, it's not gonna bite!" She took it rather gingerly and laid it on the counter.
I'd sold the doc's wife a Kimber Sapphire for his Christmas gift a year or 2 previously. He & I had talked guns on previous visits. No problem at all.

Years ago I was working a clinic and a guy came in with his wife. While Dr was checking wife the guy decided he wanted to be seen for back pain. "Take your shirt off, John." "I can't." "Whadda ya mean ya can't? Just unbotton it." "I can't." After the 3rd or 4th time, "I have a gun." "Just put it on the table and put your shirt over it, nobody cares."

Last time I went in, I was asked the usual barrage of bs questions by the new nurse which included Have you ever contemplated suicide? My response was Hell no, there ain't but one of me! made her kinda huffy. Stupid commie bitch. Do you own any guns? "If it was any of your business, which it is not, I might tell you. No bj from her
I'd guess.

They ask you that BS and even send you to see a psych (who asks the same questions and then give you the dementia oral exam) as part of your annual physical at the VA if you are 100% Service-connected. It's just part of their "tick the box" treatment regimen.

A good, piss them off answer to the suicide question is, "No, at my age, time is already running out to get everything I want to do. I'm sure as hell not going to quit before I'm done."

I am at the Cancer Center every two weeks. They ask the mental health questions. I believe that they use the automatic voice dictation equipment to transcribe the patient response.

Gents Might I suggest saying I would never kill myself ---It would interfere with my estate's malpractice case against this outfit.

I have known my new doc since 2007. Go to church, brew, and drink beer with him. He is also a hunter, so no problem with guns. My chiropractor and I talk about guns and have hunter together. Massage therapists husband owns guns and hunts. The owner of the place same thing, but she also hunts. My old dentist and I would talk guns, but he retired. My new dentist I have known since elementary school.

This made me smile, and think, that would be a cool story.

Priceless.
