I came across this great documentary on Amazon on Japanese Tattooing. Interesting viewing for a winter's night.

I'm not much of a tattoo guy, but that does look very nicely done.

Once a psychology grad student that was working me to take sediment cores was into tattooing and decided to do some sort of study relative to the pain involved in the process. When I was growing up most tatoos were small and often devoted to a girl friend; often the tattoo lasted but the relationship did not. Typically it was sailors and such that did it say back in 50's.
But tattooing seems to be a more accepted practice these days.

Hope everyone enjoys their tattoos.

Not for everyone. Nichols has a couple...I have one and will have two more by Spring. Few things show warrior culture and say F*ck you better than quality ink.

I have 4 and am trying to find somebody I trust to do number 5 for me. One is dedicated to my wife, one to my political philosophy, and 2 reflect my old military affiliations, as will number 5. I never had one until I was in my 40s but now I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks, the serve as a reminder to me of what matters.

I appreciate the artistry behind them and my wife has a few but when I have thought about getting any I become disinterested. If that makes me less of a warrior to some then so be it.

EXACTLY

Im not opposed to tasteful tattoos and all the better if they aren't over done. Too many is, well, too many; but that's a personal decision. If we're talking about warrior Tats, maybe a list of battles you've been in, sorta like a "Tour jacket" might be cool.

I also like the idea of medical info, in case youre not able to speak (especially if you travel outside CONUS). Ive seen Tats that have blood types and allergies, diabetes, etc. Think dog tags, that says warrior to me.

Pretty sure that's completely not the point.

That makes good sense. The letters need to be large enough so that they will not blur with time.

I've seen all sorts of stuff. I've seen the 9 line medivac form on someone's forearm so he could just roll up his sleeve and read it over the radio filling in the blanks. I've seen Meat Tags (tattoos of your dog tags). One buddy even had a tat of 6 broken M16s to signify each person lost in his unit over the course of GWOT. The only color tattoo I have is dedicated to my daughter, the rest are black and white so far.

No ink. The only holes in me are work, accident or surgery related.

My dad and my great uncle had distinctive tattoos on their forearms. I wish I'd photographed them when they were clear and undamaged by aging.

Maybe when I pull the plug--something along the lines of a broken arrow and the words:

"Vale et omnia quae"

Here's a couple of my warrior ink. Viking Ruins, one says Rage and the other is Hate. if you see these my hands are up on my center line either in a fighting stance or with a close quarters grip on a long gun.

I've given serious thought to getting the school crest from my dojo as my first..... I guess nothing else seems like tattoo material for me.

I have tons of events and experiences I'd like to commemorate on my skin. The hard part is choosing which ones and what pictures best describe what I want to say, even if it only means something to me and nobody else

Guess it depends on how loud and proud you are of it. I have one on my forearm that most consider somewhat silly but it was important to me to be able to show it to people whenever I felt like it. Then I have a pontoon boat tattooed on my chest that I’m by no means shy about it but it doesn’t need to come out very often.
I also have one I got from a guy who ordered the gear off amazon in Afghanistan. It’s hidden well because it’s awful quality wise; but I love knowing the story behind it.

Understand that.

If one is to tell stories on one’s skin...seems to me they must be earned by paying the iron price.

Many of us have paid that price, so I wouldn’t feel too bad about on that score.

As I get older, maybe a bar code that when scanned, tells the finder where to dump me off when I forget where I live...
After his fourth knee surgery, a buddy of mine had the bar code for ibuprofen tattooed on the back of his calf.

Scars tell the most interesting stories...

They do indeed. I just got a new 10 inch long scar just 14 days ago (sutures and staples still in place), and the story that goes with it is equally long.

Many years ago the steel mill that my step father worked in would pay you a hundred dollars for each inch of permanent scar that one got from an accident and there were workers trying to make their cuts scar up to collect the money.

Fast-growing, persistent lesion below the eye. Excised and off to the lab.

Looks like I was careless with the cordless.

I asked for a Scoobie Doo bandaid, but they were out.

I told my grandkids that the scar on my forearm from my first Melanoma surgery 5 years ago was from a knife fight. I had to make it good.

On the plus side, the new isn't cancer related. I'm looking forward to getting the sutures and staples out next week.

The scars on my father’s body told the stories of survival! Tarawa - Saipan - basal cell - squamous cell - malignant melanoma .... but no tats.

Got this tat eighteen years ago. Originally meant to represent me protecting my four kids, whose names appear on the rocks beneath the lion's feet. It has double meaning to me now after reading about CS Lewis' character Asplundh. Thinking about adding Lion King cub cartoon tats for each of my grandkids. No regrets.

I have two tattoo. One is an EGA I got shortly after getting to the fleet. The other is a Japanese warrior with a koi, and mum. That tattoo was done by Horiyoshi. My friend had been going to him for a long time and there was mutual respect. I went with him as I liked his tats and met Horiyoshi. I had no clue who Horiyoshi was until I had long gotten out of the Corps. The warrior has meaning and so does the koi, but it took time for the mum to have meaning. Since I had told him to do what he wanted I didn't know how it would look. It took 11 sittings 2.5 hours each. He charged very little for the amount of work he as he normally charged 5 times what I paid.

Scars I have the normal ones and a 12" one that has been cut open 4 times including surrounding scars.

I will have to look at the link of the video later.

I got one in 1989. On my left shoulder.

Still have only one.

Kept thinking about getting more, but there's better things to do with my money. Like training.
