View Full Version : I mowed my lawn today
I mowed my lawn today, and am reminded of some of the reasons why I do the things I do. It allows me to live how I live, and I live in my own zen. Where/what is your zen place?
I gave up sports cars for this, basically, but I DID at least retain high-speed internet :) (if you call 9.5 down and 2 up "high speed"...it's good enough for FPS's as my ping is low).
River forms the northern property border, and is 50 feet to the left of the gazebo in the second picture.

Buying this currently (under contract) which is adjacent to my property current, and will double my water frontage from 3 to 600 feet, and increase my acreage total from 6.15 to 13 (most of it is wooded and steep, leading to the house/meadow/"river". Photo taken across the meadow with the gazebo from t he second picture as the focal point in the distance at about 11 o'clock in the photo.:

pics ? would love to see the water frontage. Our household is looking at buying up some property as well. Just not sure where ? FYI...someone gave a price quote of $ 60 to cut my lawn a couple of days ago. Then offered it $50 if done every 2 weeks. We had a family friend staying at our home at the time, while we were at work. The camera system alerted me that someone was my property and was able to call the family friend during their conversation. I told her, "no thanks as I cut my own". Not only do I enjoy the fruits of my labor, but I get a little workout too. Congrats on the property.

For me mowing if I am using the lawn mower does have a relaxing aspect for mowing where the lawn is well established. Using the mower on newly cleared area or the bush hog where it is needed is not so relaxing. I am still taking down trees and understory.
The big issue is mowing in late summer and fall, especially about Oct and Nov. The yellow jackets are at their worst. If you want excitement, try running over a nest of yellow jackets. A pistol is of no use against a stirred up colony of yellow jackets unless you use it to put yourself out of your misery.
Area that I am clearing. Puppy is tied to keep him out of trouble. His mama is free to be on the look out for water moccasins.

Bon vivant indeed. No clue where you're at, but that looks like Missouri/Arkansas? Nice spread.
I hate cutting grass. Always have, even when I was a kid and that's how I made money. But I'm too cheap to pay somebody. I think because it's a neverending job. I build homes, anything I do looks great forever. Cut grass, looks great for a couple days and then you have to cut it again. But I know other people who love it. My pastor says that people come to him with all kinds of problems, and the one thing in his life he has control of is his lawn. I get it.

Sweet, there was two properties I looked at buying when we were making the move to GA. One was 15 acres the other was 13, both were under 200,000.00 with a house around 2000 ft. I ended up buying in a subdivision with utilities on 1 acre and it’s a new house ( (apx 2500ft with finished basement) for less. I’m looking for something alittle bigger now, my other house is ready to be rented and I will do pretty well on it. I know the area pretty well, so dependent on work when if and when I go back I will choose the location.

Takes me about seven hours with a walk-behind mower. Much of the land I have in grass is on a grade. Surprising what a workout that can be, especially if I don't cut it weekly. The dogs keep an eye on me and on what's happening around me. Perfect early warning system.

Good eye! Yes, Missouri. Thank-you.
I find that mowing is also philosophical. It is like life. The jungle is always trying to break down the order of man, and return it to the order of nature. It is the same with our bodies, our minds, and everything else we own. Time and lack of management will always cause a reversion to the natural order. It is this natural order that we, as humans, constantly struggle with, and so it is with a lawn.

So true. Bush and forest fires are now a constant threat in Florida because when the subdivisions went in, the surrounding forests were left unattended. The lumber companies used to burn the undergrowth back every three years. Let it go for 20 plus years and there is a fire disaster waiting to happen. Once the land has been cleared, regular mowing keeps it open and grass even without planting will often naturally invade the area and grow. Cease mowing and the forest returns. The native americans in many areas prior to the European invasion maintained open forests and grass lands with fire and modern forestry does that today.
