Hey Gabe, is there any specific reason SI went with the Remington and not the Mossberg? Not knocking the choice, I personally prefer the 870 to the 500 family.

Gabriel Suarez
04-21-2017, 02:57 PM
You could ask the same of Nighthawk, Wilson, Robar, Salient, and just about everyone else that customizes or sells custom shotguns. They don't do Mossbergs. Not that their shotguns are better than ours...ours exceed theirs in every way.

My reasosn are I suspect the same as theirs. Mossberg is the Ruger of the shotgun world. Their focus is cheap guns. In all my teaching years (since 1995) my experience has been that Mossbergs are very rough hewn with manufacturing shortcuts all around. You can feel the difference as soon as you work the action. Even a stock 870 feels better better than a tuned Mossberg. I have seen many malfunctions and breakages with a Mossberg...and far fewer with an 870. I think the steel receiver is an important aspect as you can tune and polish steel but you cannot do the same with aluminum. And before anyone brings up the 1301 I will say that I have seen Benelli shotguns (same-same) that have been shot to death. The receiver holes begin to elongate and eventually the receiver is done. So just because one can make a shotgun from aluminum doesn't mean they should.

I carried an 870 into battle for years and know what it takes to make the weapon sing. Mossbergs don't sing...they grunt and mumble. The Mossberg fans like to say the 870 is no better but in truth it is...whether they like it or not. I am not in business to validate their choices. Incidentally...its not an issue of price since MY price on a Mossberg 590 is exactly the same as a Remington 870. I don't sell shotguns, I sell weapons that are also art. It is far easier and less trouble to tune an 870 than a Mossberg.

I chose what is better.

Drop a cup full of sand into an out of the box 870 and that is what a Mossberg feels like to me.

Thanks Gabe! Glad to be here!

Excellent and will do. I really like this concept you're working on. I tried a Shockwave 590 yesterday at the LGS, and I completely agree with you on the lack of, "execution," in the Mossberg products...love the size envelope, hate the (Mossberg) contents. And like you, I'm a fan of 870's in general for civilian applications.

In my past life, I would've LOVED to have a Stakeout working on the armored trucks in the 90's. Full stocked 870's were the weapon of the day (20" Police or Wingmasters with a barrel mount or pedestal bead) and although reassuring, they were unwieldy in bank vaults and corridors that were our thoroughfares. The Stakeout would have been the optimum defensive weapon for the armored car work, since every incident I was involved in and most of my coworkers took place within a single car length.

In my current life, as a rural dentist out in the sticks, the Stakeout would be perfect for robbery response. Having prescription pads, cash and pills (even though they're non-narcotics) makes us a target. And since we're in the sticks, LE response is measurable by the quarter hour...we're on our own.

Good on you Gabe. I appreciate your thinking and utilization of the state of the art equipment to forward the mission of the civilian defender.

Heres a couple of the ones I did a few years ago. The bottom one is a 14" done on an OTHER with a +1 mag extension. The top is something Ive been playing with for a concealable gun. Its a 20ga with a 18" barrel and +2 mag extension. It also has the shorter Remington factory BirdsHead grip and a 12 to 20 ga adapter, to allow 12ga stocks on a 20ga gun. As its a "regular" shotgun, it can be concealed without becoming a NFA issue. Its really slim and can be rolled in a towel or blanket. The old folding chair bags work although I haven't seen too many folks with chairbags lately. I'm also pondering the "Blueprint tubes", for situations where they would "fit"
52315

This is a sighting system Ive been playing with, its a tapering yellow line from receiver to the muzzle, reminiscent of the original Guttersnipe sight on the ASP pistol. Its "visible" at arms length in the modern technique that Gabe teaches and also in the High Hip position taught in the 80s. Its NOT precise; but it IS a sort of "Front Towards Enemy" indicator.

THIS is why the shorter length of the Stakeout is so important. Try doing THIS with a 18" full stocked shotgun--possible but not as maneuverable as the Stakeout.

be a little over the top for the intended
distances for the platform.

Adding a red dot majes it all easier. Its not about accuracy like a pistol...it is more about getting on target easier, faster, more confidently.

I've been reading the posts and watching the videos about the merits of the Stakeout and wondered if it made sense for me.

On the last Saturday in May at Jon Payne's shotgun class in Orange, Texas...I came face-to-face with Jon's Stakeout.
Wow! What a Beast! Wow! What a beauty!

Finally, on Sunday afternoon, it was time to shoot the Stakeout. I sent the first load of 00 Buck into the target and, as I pumped the next she'll into the chamber and fired again, my mind was hollering "I HAVE GOT TO GET ME ONE OF THESE!" I managed the beast, but it sure gives me motivation to improve my upper body strength. I ordered a Stakeout 2 days later.

Here it is, fresh from my first live fire practice. Initial shots were printing a little high, but more work on my part, both dry and live fire, my performance is improving and putting the pattern right on target.

The combination of factors - parts, SI fit and finish for grip texture/action work for smooth operation/porting, low recoil buckshot and the "stretch" technique makes this an awesome tool.

Results on paper targets are interesting. The top target Federal Premium 00 Buck, 9 pellets @ 1145 fps. My aim was a still a little high. The lower target is Federal Premium 4 Buck, 34 pellets @ 1100 fps. Target distance was 8 yards. Both loads look as if they'd get the job done.

So, once again, that dang Gabe Suarez has shown me another way to be more effective. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/715db1b09bccdf683630840abd6c48d1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/7d88eeb18f104ec27c31f9091f6a1f74.jpg

I recently added an RMR (https://suarezinternational.com/suarez-shotgun-rmr-mount/) and side saddle (https://suarezinternational.com/remington-870-4-shot-side-saddle-4-rounds-12ga/) to my Stakeout. Wow, the RMR is nice. It is a must-add to the Stakeout. I was admittedly a little concerned about being able to quickly find the dot without any co-witnessed sights, but I'm having no problem with it. And regarding the side saddle, I didn't notice any negative effects in handling after adding it. There's no reason not to add it, especially since most people will be using their Stakeout as a car gun, and there's a good chance you won't have time to grab extra ammo if you have to exit the vehicle quickly.

What are the sling mounts you guys are using for the PG, and the fore-end strap?

Brent Yamamoto

I installed one of the Magpul QD mounts. They have two types but I don't remember which one I installed...and I don't really know what's different about them.

Just drill a small pilot hole, then a larger hole matching the diameter of the QD. Screw it in and you're good to go.

Dorkface
07-31-2017, 05:18 PM
I have installed both a surface magpul QD as well as embedded a magpul QD in the raptor grip on another. Both are solid as I have done many transitions with them. For the surface mount I used a 1" #8 wood screw with a round head. The round head has a flat underside which is what I wanted. I then used a drill bit slightly smaller then the body of the screw, not including the threads, to drill a pilot hole. After that I screwed the screw into the grip to cut the path for the screw and then removed it. After that I used some Loctite universal glue (it works for both metal and rubber/plastic) on the screw after I put the screw through the hole in the QD mount and screwed it in and left it to dry for 24 hours.

For the one I embedded I used a half inch spade bit to drill out the grip. I made a mark on the bit for depth. After that I used the same Loctite glue to glue the QD in place and let it dry.

For the front I was lucky as the magpul ms3, I think its the 3, just clips onto the sling point on the mag extension lol. Done.

Magpul has a couple of different options for the QD point. The only difference in them is the screws they come with. They have screws for the UBR stock and such. The QD point is the same so it doesn't matter.

The biggest advantage of the Shockwave Raptor grip is that makes the gun 26" long and classified as a firearm. The shorter Remington grip makes it under 26" long and a short barreled shotgun...

with bead sights it gives a flat plane to sight through. As an example Brent's front sight fell off his 870 at the shotgun class and I was still able to make slug hits on target at over 50m. I can shoot with or without the rib but feel it adds accuracy with it's visual reference.

Once you put put your hands on this weapon the Battle Axe analogy becomes even more clear. It feels like you could as easily beat someone to death with this thing as shoot them. I think I have a new favorite.

Gabriel Suarez
11-19-2017, 07:27 AM
I built one that predated the Mossberg Shockwave by a few months. To be fair, the dude at Shockwave, Marty told me Mossberg was doing this so I thought if they can do it...
I have kept notes on everything dating back to the 1980s. (Some in code due to statutes of limitations and all...). I dug out my Gang Unit notes and how I used the homemade sawed off 870. Back then it wasn't a culture of pictures and instagram so I never got any pics of this.

All of it came back when I began to wield this beast. And when adding our new developments in terms of tactics, movement, etc. It really began to shine. You can go from a "smaller than fist size" group out to 10 yards, to a "cover the torso" shot at five feet with careful ammo choices. It is likely the most destructive CQB weapon known to man and exceed the rifle and SMG inside and up close. Head shots turn into decapitations. Peripheral hits rip off the musculature from the bone.

I know the term "killing power" is out of vogue for many years now and the pundits counter with "anything can kill", but I will say I have seen multitudes shot in my time in LE. Most guys shot with a 12 ga and buckshot never made it to the hospital much less the ambulance. And those that survived did not feel at all like doing anything other than laying down and hoping somebody came to save them.

Battle axe...yes...

We've the same problem, instead of farms they steal from cars parked at the church at the top of the hill. They wait till service starts and take what they like.

I've been told if I put an extender on, that will be an "Alter" and would then have to get the stamp ??? Anyone know for sure ?

Got the slug sighted barrel on my Fakeout and reduced and textured the stock fore end. I still need an SI big head saftey and maybe some porting....

I am liking this beast more and more....

Our Dept. Qualification starts with two slugs at 50 yards. Should’ve seen their faces light up when I demoed with the Stakeout. [emoji41]

My Tac-14 that I have had fun working on myself and have upgraded with parts from SI. Its been interesting going through the various iterations and seeing just why the Stakeout is what it is as SI makes them. I am a geek like that and and appreciate the deeper knowledge it can provide.

I painted mine with Alumahyde II OD green because I like the contrast of OD green and Black; Also I like the Incredible Hulk. Hulk smash.

I played around with some filters on my phone.

This is one that I got back from Mr. Anthony lol. Another friend of mine likes it and thinks it brings out the inner essence of love and peace of the gun when loaded with 3" mag 00 buck.

I did this just to put a smile on my face. Anyone that knows me won't be surprised by this lol.

Haven't sent it in to SI for the internal work (soon) so it's not a true Stakeout, but here's mine. Wife named it "Chapo".

Will be adding the folding brace from SI shortly.

I work in a gun shop in NY and have it around some days for people to check out. I describe it as an "ANTIFA Dispersal Device".

The biggest surprise is when I tell them it's NY LEGAL!

ETA: I replaced the bolt with one from my ca. 1975 Wingmaster. Racking the slide is smoother and takes 1/2 the force it used to.
