Like the title says. Couldn`t find a better forum to post this up so if it`s not really proper please feel free to move me.

I`m in the market for a new coat, going to be everyday wear, doesn`t have to be incredibly formal. My everyday coat previously has been an M65, to give a sense of how informal it can be. It`s gotta stand up well to rain (doesn`t have to be totally waterproof), cool weather, and vent heat well. I`m wanting good quality construction, I don`t want to worry about ripping something if I hit the dirt. Plenty of pockets take priority, and I`d prefer solid colors like black, green or brown to use HEAT well. Been keeping an eye on my military surplus venues (I work in the industry) but sources and sizes are hard to pin down exactly when you`re a manlet like me. Any ideas, tribe?

ETA:
Apologies for the spelling mistake in the title

Anything Duluth Trading Co has is the resl deal...they even have a M65 clone made up in modern materials...I have about 1/2 dozen items, the Shoremens Fleece and the Shirt Jac rock.

Carhartt is worth a look, too. I've had great luck with their jackets and pants.

Whats wrong with another M65? There are plenty of colour options now; but Im a fan of OD (or brown when you can find them)

THIS^^^^I signed up on their site for "specials" after Capt's first endorsement. Well made and very comfortable for everyday wear.

Give this a look. It's very well made and has some great concealed pockets.

Interesting options put forth, I hadn`t thought of Duluth, however it seems that very few vent heat well, and that was part of my criteria. Does anyone have a link or recommendation for something maybe a bit lighter? Thank you all for the replies, of course.

I would also recommend Carhart. They have several styles and are tough!

Totally, thanks! I dunno though, I like plenty of sequins, maybe a hot glue gun would work?

There're only two real options.

I have a Marmot with a zip out fleece lining and zippered arm pits. In terms of weather, it's a very versatile jacket. You can wear just the shell over a T shirt and be comfortable at 60F, or you can add the fleece, long johns, and another layer and be comfortable in single digit temps. I bought mine in 2008, and I can't remember the name of it. In any case, definitely take a look at Marmot. If this one ever wears out, I expect that I'll replace it with another Marmot.

My primary winter jacket is one of Carhartt's earlier Arctic Coat models.... Had it for just over 13 years now and it sees use every winter.

Wool, plain and simple. Nothing compares that is manmade… nothing.

Wool, plain and simple. Nothing compares that is manmade… nothing.

Wool is fantastic.
Iīve just bought 6 Pullovers with heavy wool since I want to switch over from synthetic inner layers for my outdoor gear.
However it has limitations.
Insulation and breathability are the strengths but there is no protection from wind or water.
Therefore it is not suitable for the outer layer resp. a jacket in my opinion.

Concerning the jacket itself I would recommend different versions for different tasks.
Iīve got about 10 different jackets including a classic wool coat which can be worn for business, hardshells which only protect from wind or water, leather jackets, a heavy synthetic winter parka and a highly insulated down parka which could be used even for an arctic expedition.

With clothing it is the same as with gear and weapons.
An item can be perfect for itīs intended application but have severe disadvantages for another.
Thatīs why I would always recommend to choose from several options.
