So Im getting my "head" ready for the Lion hunt. The plan now is to use my Merkle 470 SxS once I get the RMR mounted. I decided on a 12.9moa triangle to use the point for "aimed" shots at distance and the whole triangle for "up close" encounters.

We'll have the truck close, reasonably close anyway for heavy gear, packs, water, etc. So Im planning on just humping spare ammo (maybe 10 rounds), a knife, and binos/range finder, (maybe a small camera). If the PH agrees one of us will hump a set of shooting sticks.

I'll be wearing thin shooting gloves, a jacket, a hat, maybe a ascot/scarf for sweat (and fashion....), and other weather related gear (rain coat sweater etc as necessary). We arent kulling so I dont see the need for lots of ammo. Im thinking 6 spare soft points and 4 solids, with another 20 rnds in the truck just because its Afrika and you just never know....I suppose a blowout kit isnt a baaaaad idea.

I'll probably carry most or all of it on a belt. My safari jacket has "hooks" sewn onto it for "support".

Thoughts?

Never hunted Africa or Lions. At this point I have no clue which is more dangerous there-the Lions, the hajis, the poachers, or the regular locals.

How do you hunt Lions? Go on stand or do a bush drive? Stand; Elite M-1000 .300 WM. Drive: AR10T. Google Earth to check your 20 foliage, try to match it, great adventure you got there.

Read some Hemingway, carry a .357 SIG long slide G if you can. Check weather patterns before you go, clean water availability and the usual gastro- after care remedies....

Peter Hathaway Capstick, who wrote many books about his professional hunter experiences in Africa has a book titled "Safari, The Last Adventure" that is a primer on all you want to know about preparing for a safari hunt. Covers everything you might want to know in detail, from booking to getting your taxidermy done right afterwards. Good read by someone who knows. Good luck!

We'll be doing a Spot and Stalk hunt. RSA does not allow baiting, which is the preferred method. Basically we'll be driving through "known" lion areas until we spot spoor, then dropping the truck and following the trail on foot. It could be a half mile hike or much longer. The shooting is likely to be close, certainly under 100 yards (Im hoping for under 50 yards), with both us and the lions in the open. We're going in early September which is the end of Spring/early Summer. We'll be in the Kimberly area.

I wanna keep my "humping" load light, no bags or packs if possible; but Im OK with stuffing "smalls" in my jacket pockets

Steri-Pen. I recommend them for all of my patients who travel to Africa and other 3rd world areas. Use it on every bottle of water you drink even if not previously opened. Usually about $60. Get one that runs on AA batteries. AAs are available anywhere in the world. If you buy one that runs on another type bring twice as many as you think you need.

Pepto chewables. At least 1 per day.

Anti-Malaria med.

Oral antibiotic (usually Cipro or azithromycin)

Whats your hunting rigMathews Reezen 6.5, 60# draw, 28" DL, Ripcord rest, Black Gold 3-pin sight, shooting Carbon Express Maxima 250's w/ Blazer vanes and G5 Montec 100gr solid broadheads. Carter 2-shot release. Bone Collector Scent-Free fleece. LaCrosse Alpha Burly boots.

Great recipe for Whitetail. Would likely be deadly for lion, too, but I don't care to find out.

Bro until youve hunted something that can/will hunt you, its just puttin' meat on the table, not a bad thing BTW; but not the same as facing a charge with a single shot pistol after four previous shots only pissed it off..... That was 20 years ago and just thinking about it brings back the metal taste in my mouth.

I get it. But I like putting meat on the table and in the freezer, and the bow makes it as challenging as possible. I've bow hunted feral hogs on the ground- spot and stalk- and they can/will hurt you, though that's nowhere near as dangerous as hunting large predators.

Bro I AM LUCKY, Im hunting LION on my HONEYMOON with the GREATEST Woman in the world and we're doing it in South Afrika! Talking about it, planning it, getting ready for it, dreaming about it-all with her at my side is just more cool factor. The "trigger pull" will be almost anti climatic; but the next hunt begins with the planning on the plane ride home....

depends on when and where, but mostly Bowtech Prodigy or Rem 700 300RUM, sidearm (sig p289, p320, 1911, super redhawk, whatever I'm feeling), Outdoorsman Pack with 100 oz bladder, med kit, fire starter, knives with saw, scalpel blades, filet blades and they are all replaceable with about 8 extra of each. Paracord (lots), two gps systems (Garmin and Magellan), extra batteries of all flavors, life straw, granola bars, trail mix, jerky. I have extra gloves, beanie, helly hanson rain coat, tripod, three legged seat, binos, lens kits, game calls, game bags, toilet paper and wet wipes. I think that is it.

I have killed a mountain lion and black bear with this setup, mountain was a fluke because she was stalking me (under 20 yards when I killed her), shot a black bear at about 50 with the 300RUM, right through the boiler room, he ran up hill 200 yards before laying down, through thick Alaska bush. Predators are seriously strong and amazing animals, they won't go down easy. Shot a feral boar (texas) same thing, he didn't even hit the ground, just started running for 300 yards before he piled up.

I'm far more curious to see how you're able to bring the lion pelt back into CONUS, than I am with what you take.

While we're talking about 3rd world medical solutions: bring some odenastron (known as Zofran). Works great to defeat nausea, which could be a by-product of the local cuisine.

For now I cant bring it back. I was thinking about hiring a native to wear it and walk right through customs, since we certainly wont want to piss off a black immigrant....but HeadShrinkHer says if we leave it there, we'll have an excuse to go back and visit...

Do you have friends OCONUS in countries other than Africa? You could mail it to them, then possibly have them mail it to you here in the states. Just have them label the pelt ambiguously, and no one will figure it out. They certainly won't expect it.

EDIT: It might cost a little more, and it might get confiscated by customs. But then again, you might never see it again it you leave it in Africa.

I believe the cut off date for getting the trophy ing the states is today but if not it is soon.

Have it it mounted and left in the care of someone you trust in SA and if the rules evr change then ship it in. USFWS is very good at catching folks trying to bring in illegal trophies.

As as fr what to take you don't need a million drugs or a Sheri pen. You are in a hunting lodge in SA and as you well know it will be 4-5 Star accommodations and food the entire time.

Go go have fun.

I think the date is Jan 22nd, like HOW THE F*@K did they come up with that date? Yeah the plan is now to leave it there with a plaque saying "Shot by some crazy F'er on his honeymoon" or some such and hope a Republican with balls gets elected and tells Fish & Game to suck turtle nuts....

Get you and your bride each a couple of pair of Ray-Ban shooting glasses -- check out the various colors for those Hemingway/Hunter Thompson photo ops or selfies with Simba.

Love the ascot/scarf addition! Add to that a slouch hat -- always looks good with a classic rifle. 46533

Back in the day I'd give away spare knives, folders and fixed, Leatherman tools, Mini-mag flashlights, etc. as gifts to locals during missions to Guatemala, Ecuador, etc. Not the Randall or the Cold Steel Master Tanto, of course. I wasn't that rich or generous.

You need absolutely ZERO anti malarial profalaxis off all but a coupmof areas in SA and you will be on the opposite end of the entire do try from them. The Eastern Cape is a malaria free zone.

Water. Don't forget water and a way to filter it. Last year we got out of the truck for what we thought would be a 200yd stalk on some buff. it ended up being 7 hours before we got back.

Sorry about that man, I haven't been to any of the good places in Afrika.
The weekly profo's would surely lead to great post from Edel.
