Hello all, I know I don't post a lot nor have the in-life experiances as most of you, (19 y/o), but everyday I get on the forums expanding my knowledge in whatever is being discussed throughout the day.
But to the point, I work as a paid EMT on the Fort Mill Rescue Squad in the small town of Fort Mill, SC. Although the call volume is lower than most agencies we still get enough runs and donations to keep us afloat. Finally after 60 to sometimes 70 hour workweeks, 2 reccomendations from directors on rescue agencies and 1 from a forrmer {coast guard/swat/flight} medic, I received an invatation in the mail regarding medical standby for Pope Francis in Philly. Keep in mind, only 10 out of 120 picked EMS personel to be on the standby team are active in Pennsylvania. The other 110 were picked throughout the United States. I and the highly commemorated paramedic are the ones who will be representing Fort Mill and also the state of South Carolina. The local news actually covered a story on us early Monday morning along with an on camera interview. Let's just say I learned talking in front of a camera isn't something I'm the best in.
Our task given at the standby; patrol 6 miles on the greenway, being the only EMS personel with armed Guard National Guard posted every 1/8 mile in the area in our supercool, all-terrain Gator for 3, 14 hour days. Expect 200-300,000 individuals everyday walking/biking on this path to get into the city. Officers actually arrested someone last week on the greenway for suspicion of planting a bomb in a water bottle. We're expecting the Pope to walk a fraction of the path on one of the days he's in town, meaning we'll be cruising right behind him.
It's an honor to be doing this and a great way to kickstart a career. Once in a lifetime opportunity. Requesting prayers for safe travel and sharp wits!
