My wife and I are seriously considering a relocation completely across the country to Alaska. Are there any fellow tribesmen there?

Yes, but i'm not one of them. They should be coming by soon.

Indeed. I'm in Palmer. Sammy and Netpackrat are in Anchorage. (But I'm informed that Gabe recently banned Sammy, who now posts over at Paragon Pride. And Netpackrat has decided to spend his time there now as well.) I believe that ReyCon is in Wasilla, but I've never actually met him. The shooting range at Birchwood (http://brspclub.com/)is about halfway between me and Anchorage. Sammy and I meet up there pretty regularly to shoot, and Netpackrat occasionally makes it. Padre expects to be joining us soon.

Alaska is awesome. You'll love it.

Aren't there two Alaskan SI instructors? Matt Sweeney and Philip Asay.

Lawdog, Palmer is where we are looking. I am going to apply with the AST so that may determine where we end up but if the AST doesn't pan out then we will probably end up in Palmer or Wasilla.

How are the utility bills in Palmer?

I'm in Anchorage. If you love the outdoors you will love living in AK!

How are the utility bills in Palmer? There is nothing abnormal about the utilities in this area. They are on par with what I was accustomed to from Georgia or Virginia. The expectation is that you'll be paying gobs of money to heat a house, but it isn't really like that. Now, if you build a 5,000 square foot house out of marble and glass, you can expect to pay a lot to heat it. Alaskan homes do often tend to be smaller, and we don't have high southern ceilings. But the utilities are normal.

In the Mat-Su Valley, if you are in LE then all of your work will come from Wasilla. The courthouse, jail, and main trooper post are in Palmer. It's the best of all worlds. You can live in Palmer, where the crime is extraordinarily low, but you still have enough crime coming from Wasilla to keep you in business. Also, by living in Palmer, you'll less frequently run into people at the grocery store who you have arrested. There are very few rentals in Palmer, though. If you come up with uncertain plans, you may end up in Wasilla for a little while. Most of Wasilla is fine, though I definitely prefer Palmer. But don't live near Williwaw Way, Pittman Road, or Meadow Lakes.

If you get a pre-move trip, let me know and we'll have dinner. I'll follow with a PM.

Yes, I'm in Wasilla, and shamefully I've not met up with the other tirbe members, other than to take Phil's classes, for any other activities but would love to any time schedule allows. I'm two on two off on the Slope until December then full time into firearms study/shop and realestate. As stated, if you love outdoor activity, Alaska is where it's at.

Lawdog, we're still about 5 years out and we are going to try to have as few loose ends as possible. Everything will hinge on whether I make it on with AST. My wife is a nurse so hopefully she'll find work easily wherever AST sends me.

I live on the Kenai peninsula in Sterling. It's fairly quite, if you end up down here stay away from Nikiski AKA "North Road". Not everyone there is bad but a lot of backyard boogie cooks (meth). We have a pretty nice range down here SnowShoe Gun Club. They run 3 gun, Uspsa and recently SGC mid range F-Class rifle comps.
We're also exploring pushing our range to 1,000 yards.
Also feel free to message when and if you arrive I'd be more then willing to lend any assistance I can. That offer extends to any other tribesman as well

Oh and if you like internet make sure you move somewhere GCI is available. It's the only Cable internet and the DSL providers are terrible IMHO
