My grandparents ended up with a fridge full of them one year I bet some of my family back home in the people's republic of Illinois will be walking the woods picking them left and right

Around here they seem one much more plentiful in old orchards and randomly in the woods. Might need to find time for a walk in the woods.

They were few and far between this weekend. Hunted pretty hard for a few hours, but oh-so-worth the effort.

I've been told I have low morals and I'm always like "well ya the grow on the ground" not really sure what they're getting at

I grew up in Iowa and used to hunt Morels. Was great fun and the only fungus I could ever stand to eat.

They should be starting to pop here this weekend into next week and I hope to get out to do some hunting this weekend with the XO and kids. I love Morels fried in butter with a little salt!

Mushrooms are cool it's like meat that grows out of the ground.
Morels are hard to find here....before the deer and other critters get to them.
They are pretty good battered and fried.

I like a nice .22 mag, they can charge you. It's not real fast but it's lethal

Well, I was carrying a 9mm and the XO had her G42, but I was able to take down every one of them w/ empty-hand skills.

Our best success was under standing dead elms that just shed their bark.
The Dutch Elm Disease is now ancient history, the standing dead have long since shed their mushroom fertilizing bark, most standing dead have fallen over.
I would (just out of habit) hunt hard in areas with standing dead any kind of tree.
Pick, slice longways, soak overnight in cold saltwater. Roll in flour, fry in butter.
Good memories!

My grandpa always used to say, "you have to look up to find mushrooms."... meaning look up to find the dead elms. You're right, most of the old dead elms are on the ground, and the few that are still standing are long dead and no longer throwing spores. I have, however, had moderate success under dead black oaks... or even a large, dead branch of a live black oak tree. My dad claims that a dead hard maple can also be good, but I've never seen it. However, my best spots (currently) are on west-facing slopes with a number of small dead elms- w/ trunks about the size of a baseball bat barrel.
But I think loose, loamy, natural soil is a necessity, too.
