View Full Version : Your placid moment. A pictoral

Sitting here after a training prep day just noticed a moment that probably wouldn't be pictured in Southern living (though it probably should be). A good dog, a blackberry whiskey in a ball jar, a TSD Glock , and a spare mag, all at the Masters side, waiting for a moment.

How bout your pics ?

Don't have any pictures (long before digital cameras) of me sitting on my 350X, with the M1A across my lap, glassing the mountain sides and reclaimed strip mines for deer in WV. The good old days, and I didn't even realize it.

I see a spot along Rt. 288 that reminds me of one of the places I used to sit and watch for deer. A little hump with a small tree on it sticking out from the hill side is very similar to a little hump with a tree on it sticking out from the mountain side down near Burdette's Creek off Meadow River.

Down here in the Richmond area? I don't know. I'm retiring here in a few months and I plan to dig out that hammock my wife bought for me 8 or 10 years ago and stretch it between a couple trees out behind the house and maybe do some reading and drink some iced tea. I hope that thing hasn't dry rotted, but I just don't have time to use it.

A recent placid moment. I was driving back from Valdez. As I was heading south from Eureka, the sun was dipping towards the mountains. Rather than trucking on and trying to make it home before dark, I decided to stop at a pull-out, set out a camp chair, and enjoy my coffee, while gazing at this. Most people try to avoid Alaska in winter. They'll never know just how special it is.

The fun part about Dubai is that they have had issues with European visitors not quite understanding that Dubai, despite the modern cosmopolitan appearance is still a Muslim state. So German and French tourists would show up hit the beach and proceed to do what they do and lose their tops. This is a big no-no for women. Luckily Dubai isn't Saudi Arabia, the police tended to just make them cover back up. In Saudi I'm pretty sure they'd have beaten the shit out of them or worse.

Beautiful beaches though.

I spent several years in Dubai. Back in the day we would swim at Chicago Beach. Often times clumps of crude oil would stick to our heals. This was when Saddam was torching oil wells in Kuwait and for a few years after. Dubai does a good job handling westerners and our culture. Plenty of Brits, Americans and Russians getting their drink on and living a great lifestyle. In fact, when I was there.. we got away with more then one could back in Maryland, Ohio or Texas for that matter.

Maybe not the most placid moment, but this recent one in Maui for my 10 year anniversary/wedding renewals with both my kids that included some highlights such as staying in Lahaina, took the road to Hana (as well as the road less traveled - the same one that Gabe mentioned), Royal Lahaina Luau, and especially to Haleakala Volcano for the sun rise and where I proposed to my wife. The Luau was on the same day that the Mayan calendar was ending, called my training partner (Boopee) and was asked what I was going to do; I stated "I will watch the sun set and in the morning will watch the sun rise". All events occurred with a John Chamber's special (kitchen knife with sheath made with original plastic package, duct tape, shoe lace for retention with carabiner and hole punch carried at 4 o'clock). Life is good....

Bahrain is similar been there 3 times had drinks with a Rhodesian, did shots of jager with a Finn, got drunk and sang karaoke with a couple of brit school teachers and raced go carts with a bunch of arabs only to run one of the track in a turn and us shake hands after the race.

This is a picture of the moon rising over Takur Ghar, which is the peak to the right of the moon in the photo. I think most of the WT members might remember what happened there in 2002, but if not you can read it here--http://military.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_Takur_Ghar

This was in 2007 from the roof of Firebase Olaes where the AO was still very much in contention while smoking a Ghurkha Cigar before bed. I think about this picture and it makes me both relaxed (in a strange way) and sad (in the usual way).

Moonrise is always a special placid time.

Been meaning to scout this area for elk or mule deer for this year. Saw a few old scrapes, some droppings, but then.... spying a few lines through the binoculars, the climber in me said 'let's go check out the FA potential up there.'

By the time I checked out a few 4 star lines I figured I'd scamper up the back side for giggles. Not a bad view, or workout.
