View Full Version : Sometimes Kydex just does not fit...

Hand tooled and stitched leather just plain stirs the soul, especially with a good revolver. Revolver is a M-64 S&W with cocobolo grips, knife is a small drop point with bone scales. Leather work is a mix of mine and a custom maker from South Texas who is no longer in business. Combo hides wonderfully under a suit and looks much nicer at the BBQ. :biglaugh:

I have been considering an ostrich Miami Vice Special for the RMR-17. And no...I am not kidding. Sometimes a man has to put on his best James Bond.

interesting coincidence. I have also been considering a good leather shoulder holster for my long barreled g35. I've been looking for something custom, I haven't been satisfied with most of what I have seen.

I saw a stingray holster and mag pouches that has been calling my name.

Ring lizard, bro. Ring lizard. Frog skin looks nice, too. Elephant, if you want to spend $1k or higher.

That is a nice rig. there is something to be said for a handcrafted rig for certain occasions. I ve had the itch for a really nice set up for "dress occasions". Might have to do a G19 for just such an occasion. Hard chromed V3 slide? Hard chromed base plates? That wheel gun sure looks nice..maybe I need a 3" 686...hmm decisions.
My brother in law speals highly of a guys work from Southern Oregon. His boots are highly sought after and amazingly crafted. I hear he has also done some amazing western rig holsters. This made me want to also get back in touch with him to see what he could do for a rig. Here is his website:

No pics of his holsters but hoping to get some. If his other work is any indication it's gotta be nice.
Wood, leather, and steel have stirred men's souls since the dawn of the Iron Age. When anyone asks me what gift to buy a man, that's my answer, wood, leather, and steel.

... but sometimes Kydex + leather can make sweet music together:

Those Garrett Silent Thunder holsters are pretty nice.
Very fitting for a nice 1911. Keep that finish looking good!

Thanks. Tucker Gunleather also has some fantastic leather-lined kydex offerings. Since discovering this place, however, I don't think the finishes on any of my Baers are in any danger.

One of these days, I will get around to taking pictures of the stingray rig I had made for my RMR G20.

Pm me if interested, but we get flyers from the leather craft shops in the prison sytem. For ranger belts and holsters and the like. When I get back from vacation I will post some pics of the rigs. The belt with buckle will set you back around 130 ish but you won't find similar leather and construction on the outside for less than 400. Hand carved oak and basket weave can be had from 1 1/4 dress to 2 1/2 duty. One of my belts is still running strong after 15 years
Most of the investigations division is sporting them now
Mine were made by the love lady unit tdcj.
When I get back I will also scan or photo the order sheet to those that pm me, you send your order, they confirm and price the order , you pay, and a few weeks later 1-3. Your stuff arrives and you smile :)

Slick setup. Is the side that touches your skin all leather and the parts touching gun kydex?
I have an undercover cop friend who says that leather is much more comfortable IWB for all day use, and that kydex; while very nice, doesn't meld to the body and breath. I would have no idea if he is right as I have not worn IWB all day
thoughts?

Leather may mold to the body, but in sweaty conditions it ends up sopping wet and wet molded to the pistol.
Kydex is better, just for that reason alone, and properly designed and built kydex is just as comfortable as leather. And I wear kydex AIWB all day, most days.

Actually, it's the opposite. It's like any other rigid kydex holster, but w/ a very thin lining of leather on the inside, where the holster contacts the gun. This is my favorite style of holster for a nice 1911, where you're (at least somewhat) concerned about the finish of the gun. Tucker, Garrett and many other holster makers make various styles of hybrid holster as you describe above, where the side that's against your skin is leather and the holster shell is kydex. Tucker and Garrett both offer the leather-lining option for their kydex shells.

For the belt, I went with regular black leather. It's got double thickness of leather, with a nylon webbing reinforcement in the middle. I liked it so much, that I started wearing it as my everyday belt, which is why it isn't in this picture.
