Looking at picking up a new car. Looking at the Challenger R/T, Camaro SS, and the Mustang GT 5.0. Every fiber of my being wants the SRT8 Challenger but practicality has me settling ever so slightly for the R/T. If a Shelby or Saleen Mustang falls in my lap, I won't be too hurt.
Post pics of your muscle cars, new or classic.

This was my last muscle car. 1969 AMX. Mine was exactly like this one. It's been 20 years since I sold it.

1979 Chevy Nova with a modified 350... Looked just like this except it was black with white stripes on the hood. Sold it in 2000.

My middle brother had the Javelin with the same paint color and scheme. A 343 cu in motor and automatic transmission. My youngest brother still has a blue 1969 with a 390 that needs restoration.
My last muscle car was a 1967 R/T with a 440, 4 speed, Danya rear end and power front disk brakes. It never looked this good but it was fun for a while.

Well I like all three... But if I had to choose?
The Mustang seems to be the best bang for your buck, very impressive numbers in a straight line. I did not like the sitting position for some reason.
The Challenger while the slowest of the three, is so freaking cool looking that I love the things. Still a true 'muscle car'... Meaning it has limitations on the street/track.
I don't like the Camaro looks wise, seems plain to me. But it has been demonstrated time and again that it is clearly superior to the Ford and Dodge on the track.
If I had to buy one I think I'd go with the Challenger.

I sell Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram...pm sent to HABO.
Edit to add: Have you considered the SRT8 Core (http://www.allpar.com/news/index.php/2013/02/srt-core-launched-lower-cost-performance) Edition? All the 6.4L Hemi goodness with a lot less frills. We sold one last month and the only options the client elected to have added was hands free blue tooth. Cloth seats, six-speed, minimal chrome...it was awesome. Runs about $5k less than the standard SRT8.

My last muscle car was a Chevelle SS 402. Personally, I don't care for the new Camaro. I like the Mustang (nephew has a '12 GT) but there are an awful lot of them on the road. The Challenger turns my head every time even though I haven't driven one.
Note: EVERY time I've succumbed to practicality, budget, etc. I've come to regret it. Buy the one you REALLY want!
Best of luck. Show us some pictures when you get it!

Here's my 1969 Chevy El Camino with an LS1 350. Lots of work went into it to clean it up and get rid of the cheap fab techniques of the times. Original carb 350 went into my 76 CJ7.

Man he had a poor start, but overtook the stang using old school brute force!
All the MT and C&D vids have the Dodge last in line drag time wise, BUT that the info is from 2 years ago.
The 2013 Challenger SRT8 with it's 50 hp advantage over the base Mustang GT is unquestionably allowing it to 'manytimes' best the Mustang in a straight line... This is good as the Challengers weight certainly ain't been helping it on the drag strip. Adding corners and braking puts the GT and SS Camaro back out in front lap time wise.
Seeing the new Challengers getting into the 12.7 second range and 180mph top end makes me very happy, but the sticker price is noticeably higher than the Mustangs. Looking forward to these Core package options. Used to be in the muscle car era that Dodge/Plymouth were the affordable performance option (the Cuda 340 for example that was WAY faster than just about anything made in 1969).
I thought about this post today while driving around, took an objective look at all three of the cars and asked my wife's opinion... The Camaro is a good car, but I hate it. The Mustangs offer great performance for the price, but driving one still left me wanting more. The Challenger on the other hand is comfortable and smooth to drive, will melt the tires when one feels the urge, and looks just SO DANG GOOD. I'd take the Challenger without reservation.
MOPAR or no car.

My last true muscle car was a 1970 Chevy Nova SS 350, dark Forest Green, looked just like this one. I saved up during high school for a new car and bought it new in November 1969. I paid cash for it.
32312
350 c.i. V8, 4-bolt main, 300 HP, Muncie 4-speed. - Added Manley HP Hydraulic Cam & Lifters, Edlebrock high-rise intake, Holley 800cfm dual pumper, Accel Dual Point Distributor, Hooker Headers & Straight-thru Hooker mufflers, 12 bolt rear end w/4.10 gears, Lakewood traction bars & AirLift air bags. With the OEM street tires it easily turned low 14's 1/4 mile times. With 8" wide rear tires and the headers wide open it would turn low 13's to high 12's 1/4 mile times, depending on lane conditions and the weather.
I sold it in 1980 to a Michigan State Trooper, who used it as his under cover car for a few years. Eventually, he wrecked it and ended up pulling the engine and put it in a V-Drive speed boat.

However, THIS is the car that I really wanted and STILL is my "Dream Car", but I was short $1,500 at the time and I refused to get a loan since I was still in school.

Buick muscle cars were the most under rated and unappreciated by the hot rod crowd. No one seemed to pay attention to them. The GS400 Stage I was one of the best sleepers around. Many unsuspecting racers lost money when they bet against a "granny-looking" GS 400 or later the GS 455. The stage I package was the absolute best deal at the time, for only a couple of hundred dollars you got a couple of thousand dollars of excellent speed equipment.
Eventually in order to get some recognition from the press, Buick came out with the GXS in 1970. It was originally bright yellow with a black stripe. Then they added white and, if I remember correctly a bright blue was also available.

If it's important to you the aftermarket for Dodge doesn't even come close to what's out there for the Camaro or the Mustang. I'm biased as I've owned a few F-Body 3rd and 4th Gen Camaro and TransAms but finding good ported heads, big cams, suspension etc was always a breeze. I had a 2002 Z28 with heads cam and n20 that was unsuspectingly fast as it looked very plain jane. I'd go SS ;-)

500 ft lbs of torque (on the 455) is hard to argue with, and hard to beat.....

Well, OK. We put this together several years ago. Finally sold it after 3 years of my wife begging me to sell it.
74 Duster, 400 block bored and stroked to 499. 12.5-1 compression, Holley Dominator, hi-rise. Ran on pump gas (91 octane) plus 1/2 bottle of Lucas octane booster.
A/C, stereo, full interior. MT drag radials. 4-link suspension.
10.2 quarter-mile times at the local track. No BS.
I had a matching hood with cut-out, and a removable cowl, but I liked it this way too.
For some reason, there weren't too many contenders on the street. a Porsche here, a bike there. Nothing ever topped it light-to-light.

I continue to kick myself for selling my '67 Mustang (candy-apple red, straight-6 200, automatic hardtop) back in summer 2006 when I was going through a cash crunch. 20/20 hindsight, had I known the Air Force was gonna give me a $50,000.00 (after taxes, mind you) severance package, I'd have hung onto her. :dunno:

It has the 390 bored .030 over. Once I upgraded to more modern steering, suspension, and braking, I fell totally in love with this car. It's a keeper. This thing handles so well. Those are my rally-cross wheels and tires in the picture, but I have a more classic size wheel and tire set that I like to cruise with. The 4.10 Positraction rear-end make the acceleration sick, but I'm working on a more commuter friendly set up.

My 71 had the 2.87 Twin Grip rear and it was a highway monster. I once buried the speedo on a long straight stretch and had more motor to go. I think the 3.54s are a good compromise.
