After being self-employed as an electrical contractor for a number of years I'm making a major change. Just got burned out, I guess. Following the conversations here on WT has helped to encourage me to renew my efforts to prosper.
My wife started an accounting business 3 years ago and it is growing steadily. My role up 'til now has been supportive in nature by way of helping manage the growth, consulting with clients who needed it and marketing.
Thankfully, the business has grown to the point it's becoming increasingly difficult for her to do it all even though we have one part-time employee who helps a lot. I've already been scaling back on the electrical work anyway.
Our tax return business doubled this past season and we anticipate much more growth next year simply because the accounting part is growing almost weekly. Each successful client needs a good tax person at years end. Rather than hire an outside full-time employee, after much discussion, I've decided to take a larger role by training to become a tax advisor/preparer. It will mean some serious time in a professional-quality course, not some little half-*** seminar thingy. This is just the beginning, too. There are a lot of possibilities ahead.
We both absolutely love to help people turn businesses around that are struggling and we're seeing success at doing so. Our motto has been "If you aren't making money, it's just an expensive hobby!"
I have a lot of varied business experience to share as both an independent contractor and franchised. We've been involved successfully in real estate investing for a lot of years, too. My plan is to slowly phase out the electrical work to focus on tax work and my real estate portfolio. I'll definitely keep and maintain my electrical license since it is valuable in the real estate business.
Hopefully, this will mean less wear & tear on the old bones, a better income that is less economy-sensitive, and the satisfaction of helping others.
Off we go! Arrrrrrr
