By which I mean who here likes to play it, as opposed to merely watching it (don't get me wrong, I loooooove watching women's volleyball, but that's a separate discussion :love2:), and does so with any sort of regularity?
Back when I was a sophomore in high school, I discovered it was the one team ball sport I could play halfway decently, and while I didn't play varsity in high school or college, it fulfilled my P.E. requirement at the former and helped fulfill a lot of late-night leisure time at the latter.
I went on to play IM-Rec volleyball at all three of my active-duty assigments, and now here at Umm Qasr Port, we play v-ball every Thursday and Friday night (and sometimes an additional night or two per week as well). Our current v-ball group is a motley crew of military and civilian alike, males and females alike, Americans, Iraqis, Ugandans, Indians, and a Romanian. Fun times.

It's a great sport and I loved playing it regularly. I picked it up after school ended and became a low-A or high BB player. Congratulations on getting back into the sport! It is really fun to have a regular gig.
Stay safe.

Loved it in high school and played every chance I got. We have a church volleyball league of sorts in my area.
This 51-year-old can still give the kiddies a good run
EDIT: A good friend's wife blew out her ACL playing with us last Labor Day. She is officially retired from the sport now.

I haven't played in years but I did enjoy it socially for a couple of years. Can't play now because of a bum shoulder. Golf's out too.

YES. Favorite sport, but I've been off the court for many years. I played all through high school and made the college team at URI my freshman year (couldn't believe I made the cut!). To that I credit the prior summer, playing in a recreational league at a local high school. There were some serious players there, including some coaches that would take me aside and work with me on different issues. What's better, my high school coach (who I kinda despised) refused to believe that I made the URI team when he heard.
 SUCK IT Paulie, you little sh*t....
Sadly after the first semester (and final cuts) the team was to start traveling for tournaments & whatnot. I had an engineering major and some pretty deep involvement with my college Christian fellowship. I had to set priorities, and though it broke my heart (and grew my gut) I quit the team. Sometime during my 5th year I came to find out who the captain of the men's team was--a guy that made the team with me freshman year. Now he was captain and I was PISSED because I KNEW back in the day I was better than him! Oh well...
Such a great sport and I miss it terribly. Got to do a little coaching for my daughter's team last year...was great fun and re-woke the passion. But she didn't want to continue, so there you go....
Jump serves, hitting out of the pipe and good passing were my strengths. Couldn't set worth a crap. Someday I'll find the time and a rec league and re-live the glory days of six-packin' the other team's setter. Might need a rotator cuff surgery before that happens though...years of volleyball and tennis took their toll....

I played off and on for a couple of years and loved it! I still would if there were some friends that played.

Yeah...I just play slowpitch softball. I used to play volleyball all the time with my church but I could never get over the urge to palm the ball. Too much baseball I guess.

Ouch, that sucks!
As for me, I did Day 5 of Gabe's "10,000 Yards in 10 Days" challenge right after last night-s V-ball game.....and I'm at work now feeling sore as a b*tch all over my body and sleep-deprived to boot.....but by golly, tonight I'm gonna do both activities all over again!

Love volleyball! Played through high school, had to choose between that & swimming in college, chose swimming. I tried to play the IM stuff, but I was wayyy to competitive about it & nearly lost a couple friends over it. These days, if I'm playing v-ball, I've probably had a couple of beers at a bbq, then I'm much less of an a-hole about bad players...hell, too many beers & I am one of the bad players!
I could serve, bump & set; but I lived for my time at the net. Used to have one helluva vertical jump for a white kid from the country.

I had a friend in high school whose family was loaded; they built a legit sand volleyball pit out back. Quality sand, stadium lights, you name it. My friends and I used to play 2 on 2 tournaments until the sun came up. Tons of volleyball. I got really good.
I was screwing around in the high school gym one day (not in class) and our JV girls volleyball team was in there practicing. I asked if I could play, but told them I wanted to play one side on my own, just give me three hits. So I beat our JV team by a wide margin by myself--a feat that I'm disproportionately proud of, I'll admit.
Nowadays I'll get roped into a game at a BBQ or something and HATE it. I can't stand not being competitive at it; you know, when like 8 people stand on each side starting at the ball as it hits the sand. F that. 2 on 2 in the sand or nothing!

Know whatcha mean; I myself play better when it's 4-on-4 or 5-on-5 than when it's 6 or more.

I went with some chick to see Top Gun back in high school. That pretty much ended volleyball for me...

There are few things more frustrating than jungle/backyard volleyball. I'll admit it--even though I can't play well anymore, I'm a volleyball snob.

That made me think volleyball was the coolest sport ever!
Sometimes I think Top Gun shaped my childhood a little too much.

Reviving this thread to share a coupla tidbits:
1. My volleyball tournament team:
33823
2. Throwing in another plug for both the Paleo Diet and Kettlebell swings, as both activities have helped me improve my skills as a volleybal player; the former for helping me lose fat, and the latter for making me more explosive in my hits (both traditional textbook "digs" as well as times when I'm forced to hit the ball one-handed at an awkward, less-than-textbook-ideal manner and angle).

I've been playing with a group of friends for about 3 years now in various bar sand volleyball leagues around town. I have a blast and its always good to do something competitive.

New personal record for me in volleyball tonight: 12 straight serving points in a single game. :notworthy:

They might deflate the volleyball!
