Swiss lawmakers reject proposed bank deal to end tax dispute with US
By 126-67 with two abstentions, Switzerland’s National Council voted not to discuss the measure, which is intended to let Swiss banks sidestep secrecy laws so that they can pursue settlements with U.S. prosecutors. It instead sent the plan back to the upper house for reconsideration.
The vote was a blow to the Swiss Cabinet — the group of seven ministers and president that run the country — and notably to Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, who had presented the legislation as a way for Swiss banks to turn over confidential client data to U.S. prosecutors without breaking Switzerland’s strict client secrecy laws.

This is awesome!!!!

I recently tried to open a small account in Switzerland. Everything was in order, but the Swiss kept dragging their feet. I finally called to ask what was taking so long.

"You can't open an account with us," the Swiss lady said.

Why?" I asked.

"Because you are an American!"

A lot of people don't realize just how awful America's financial new regulations are. Our government claims it restricts your financial freedom to "catch terrorists and tax evaders" But it's really about forcing you to keep your money in the U.S. and banning you from investing abroad.

Wait until FATCA is fully implemented and your college age kid wants to study as an exchange student in Europe and you can't send her money. Or you want to expand your small business into Asia and cannot open a bank account there.

Good for the Swiss for supporting freedom :yahoo:

Way to GO Swiss ! ! !

I wish MORE countries would tell the US to go pound sand when it comes to things like this.

I'm waiting for BHO to propose UN sanctions against Switzerland.

It is difficult for any nation to stand up to the Goliath of the U.S. government. I'm glad the Swiss have the strength (and the balls) to do it.

If the value of the Swiss banking system is destroyed by caving into US demands then they don't have much else to offer the world.

I will be watching this very closely. Based on the outcome other countries, perhaps with little to loose may follow suit. The sad thing is that we keep so many small countries on the pay roll that they might not want to piss off daddy.

Ear to ground....

And that is exactly it. Preservation of self. They got into hot water a few years back by already loosening their lips a bit much with those Yankees.

I re-read The Dogs of War last week. Logistics is one of the major topics of the book; it was written in 1974, and it's amazing how easily and confidentially one could handle finanaces back then.

Just visited Panama, where they have 131 banks in a country of 3 million people.
Citizenship for your whole family if you invest (buy a beach house)for $200,000.
Curious how their bank rules work compared to the Swiss.
They may be relying on Central and South American investments over US, but I wonder what advantages they offer?

Panama is vying to the LATAM Switzerland. It uses the dollar rather than the Swiss Franc. It is an easy jump off point to anywhere from Europe to Asia, by air or sea. And it is where all US politicians keep their corruption money from the Clintons to the Bushes so nobody will ever snoop around the Panamanian banking system in our lifetimes.

Yes...I have been looking there for some time now.

Switzerland you get a numbered account.
Panama you get an anonymous corporation.
Get a good lawyer/accountant in Panama and the options available to you will blow your mind. There is a reason Panama City has a skyline that morphs most US cities. Although, good luck getting your IRA etc out of the US in the upcoming years without wearing an eyepatch or learning to sail.

THere are quite a few people renouncing their US citizenship to tell the US to go fuck themselves.

I hold US, Hungarian, Philippine and Spanish passports but I will never ever in my lifetime give up my American.....I was born and raised here and I hope to die here but I would rather prefer that I am a citizen of the world.

As the dollar looses it's status as the world reserve currency, more and more countries will be telling the US to GFYS. Having banking options set up in advance will be a very good thing for any pirate. As the US looses control of things in the rest of the world, it will tighten it's control of things here at home.
