"Bulletproof coffee" is kind of big in the paleo-eating world (you can search for it on the Bulletproof Executive website), but I've never really been a "coffee guy" (I make some good green tea a few mornings each week) so I never really had any. Basically, it's replacing breakfast with high-quality coffee that has a few tablespoons of grass-fed butter and some MCT or coconut oil blended into it. It supposedly keeps you from getting hungry until lunchtime, increases fat-burning, etc.
Last weekend I met up with some people at a coffee shop that turned out to be a paleo-only establishment. Awesome fare, and I went ahead and ordered a bulletproof coffee. I think it might have changed my life.
I had a gift card to store I never visit, but ended up using it to get a hand-crank burr grinder, nice glass French press, and handheld frother. Then I picked up some good organic slow-roasted Peruvian beans.
Long story short, this morning I hand-ground some beans, French-pressed them, and added a good amount of grass-fed butter, some coconut oil, and a touch of raw cocoa powder. Holy crap--that stuff is delicious and made me super energetic and focused so far all morning. I also had a killer weights workout.
I think I might be a "coffee guy" now.

Some places sell it with extra MCT oil (bottled seperately). Be careful though if you are adding that extra oil to your coffee because it can give you the runs!

Yeah, I'll probably pick up some straight-up MCT oil. I eat a ton of coconut oil already, so I'm not worried about any gastric issues.

I have been drinking it off and on for a month and will be getting back on it next week. It is a really great way to jump start your morning. Also, use unsalted butter.

Agree; I use unsalted butter for everything. However, the one I had at that shop used salted butter and a touch of caramel, and the combination was delicious. Might be an occasional treat.

Sounds awesome. I'm already a coffee guy, somewhat, but I'd like to experiment a little. What do you mean by "raw cocoa powder" - is it marked as such, or come from a specialty type store?

Butter in my coffee? I'm still trying to digest that. (Forgive the pun.) I'm a coffee snob, and I've tried coffee in some unique ways. But I've never added a few tablespoons (that's a lot) of butter to my coffee. I roast my own beans, grind them right before brewing, and use a press pot for full flavor. Some days I drink it black; some days I dress it up with cream and sugar (or Splenda). At moments of extreme laziness, I have used a butter knife with the remnants of butter (what was left after buttering a biscuit, muffin, or some such) to stir my coffee, because it was just way too much effort to open a drawer and dirty up a spoon. And I kind of liked the oiliness and hint of butter that it added to the coffee. But I can't envision what a few tablespoons would taste like. Plus, that's a lot of fat intake.
I'll give this a try, but I doubt it's making its way onto the normal menu. I'd be interested to learn more about the science behind this.

Yeah, I don't know that I'd recommend it for someone on a lowfat diet who's eating grains and sugars, but for someone like me who gets 60-70% of calories from fat every day, this is awesome. It's 1:30 and I'm just now getting around to thinking about eating something.

Sorry, wasn't super clear--it was just some organic 100% baking cocoa...although now I'm imagining dropping in a square of Lindt 90% dark chocolate.

Seems like a waste of my morning Kona by putting butter or coconut anything into it. I'll just run a few more 100 yard sprints if I need to burn off a large breakfast. Besides I really enjoy a Paleo breakfast.

Are you supposed to nix the milk and sugar, and focus only on the added fats?

Yeah, the original recipe on the Bulletproof Exec website just has coffee, butter, MCT oil as the ingredients, but I believe he also has a list of other stuff you can add if you want to tinker, e.g., cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, etc.
Not being a "coffee guy", I'm curious about what you coffee guys think if you try it. I love it, but I love pretty much everything, so who knows.

I started doing it with unsalted grass-fed butter and coconut oil, nothing else. (I'm usually a cream and little sweetener kinda guy). I blend it with one of those hand-held immersion blenders and it comes out creamy, foamy, oily, and delicious. Made me a believer. I thought it would be gross, especially with no sweeteners, but it's really pretty good, and fits the paleo diet much better than my normal coffee did.

Nowhere special; just pieced the gear together from big box stores and Amazon and got the beans at Sprouts. I get the feeling I'll be delving into some specialty coffee store at some point, though.
Since everything is small and handheld and either manual or battery operated, I'm in the process of putting together a backpacking coffee kit...

What's the diff between using the coconut oil and the coconut milk? Other than the oil is all oil, and the milk has coconut milk solids suspended in oil, heh.

I'm a total coffee w cream & sugar guy every morning, 365. Never have been much of a breakfast guy.
I must try this, thanks for the distro.
Been drinking this stuff for at least a year now; its awesome, tastes great, levels out the caffeine spike from the coffee. Can't say enough about it. Make sure you get the "unsalted" butter, (kerry gold, or sworjna something, its icelandic butter from the hippie stores). The extra salt could really take a number on you after a while.
I prefer the coconut oil to the MCT as the MCT can "grease the skids" if you know what I mean, if you put too much in.

Put it in a blender or get a hand blender. You need to immolsify the butter and oil into the coffee to get that latte effect.
I read this, and thought "ugh, that sounds sick, and a cruel thing to do to good coffee."
Then I thought a bit about Tibetan butter tea, pemmican, muk tuk, and all that sort of thing.
And went....hmmmm.
So I just made a big cup of the stuff for dinner, with a Tanka bar.

I'm in the process of putting together a backpacking coffee kit...A good backpacking coffee kit is actually pretty difficult to assemble. I've tried several things, and eventually just settled on instant. (I know--blasphemy.) I started with a small, battery-powered grinder. It worked horribly, leaked grounds everywhere, and broke in no time. Then I got a nice brass Turkish grinder. It made a decent grind and didn't leak many grounds out, but it was large, awkward, tiring to use, and weighed as much as a 6" barreled 1911.
Now, for trips that are just a couple of days, I'll grind the beans in advance (not ideal) and keep them in a Ziploc. Once in the field, I'll just toss them into near-boiling water and drink it cowboy style. If you have a steady hand, don't swirl your beverage, and let the grounds settle, you'll just get a few bits of the grounds if you leave the last little bit in the bottom.
For trips beyond a couple of days, I go for instant. I found an instant espresso in Italy that was pretty good. But last summer I finished off the last of my supply. So I've got to find a substitute until my next European vacation.
If you make any useful discoveries regarding backpacking with coffee, I'd be interested in hearing about them.

The current plan is to get a hardsided case (like a pistol case or Pelican-style one) that I can cut the foam to fit my French press, hand grinder, and small hand blender. I think it'll work; all the components are relatively small, and I can just lash the case to whatever. I'll keep you posted.

The crunchy bits are the best part.
We used to make field coffee by dumping a can of ground coffee into a ~25 gallon pot and stir. The young, impatient marines got the stuff on the top of the pot. The old guys waited a bit and got the stuff near the bottom.
I always wondered what taking some of the grounds and putting it between two pieces of chocolate cake would taste like.

Even Dr. Andrew Weil has comments and history on this...
http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA401262/Should-I-Drink-Bulletproof-Coffee.html
It's not as odd as you may think. Adding butter to hot drinks is a longstanding tradition in many parts of the world. Mixing spiced butter into coffee is common in Ethiopia, for example. Similarly, hot tea with yak butter - vigorously churned to prevent the fat and water from separating - is a staple drink of Tibetans who live at high altitudes. They regard it as an essential source of energy that helps them flourish in their harsh, frigid climate.

Lawdog, for backpacking, grind in advance- (not ideal) but use a metal mesh tea ball. Works great and only weighs a half ounce. In a pinch I'll buy folgers coffee bags. I like the tea ball better.

Gave this a shot for breakfast and must say its tastes much better than it sounds! Definitely a treat. Here's what I did: 16oz black coffee, 30g organic coconut oil, 2tbsp Kerrygold (grass fed Irish) butter.
My local store only carries the salted Kerrygold so if I stick to this I will be sourcing out the insulted version ASAP. Also will be replacing the coconut oil with some MCT oil. I'm going to give it a week and go from there. But for anyone thinking about trying this, go for it.
On a side note make sure to "pre-heat" your blender before dumping hot coffee in it or you may end up with a cracked blender!

Same here, using a regular drip pot right now though. I have a press but I always run short on time in the mornings. Also I have read that some of the oils that remain in coffee when done on a press can counteract the positive effects of drinking it. But that could just be speculation. I have noticed that most people always reiterate running it through a filter of some sort.
I drink mine around 5:00a and don't feel any hunger at ll until about 10:30a which is a long time for me because I usually have to eat breakfast within an hour after waking or I feel sick.

I think the point is to add good fats to your coffee rather than to add carbs (sugars, chocolate, whipped cream, etc.). Fats take longer to digest and fit the paleo objective.

This has quickly become one of the "finer things" for me. I typically don't need food first thing in the morning, but after a BP coffee I usually won't eat my first meal until 1 or 2 in the afternoon, then will get all my calories in by 8 pm or so. Energy is great, workouts are great, less time making food, and the intermittent fasting aspect of it is making me lean out even more. My abs are approaching King Leonidas status.

The sweet spot for me seems to be around 3tbsp butter, one of coconut oil in a...20oz(?) coffee mug. I'm really not sure of the size of this mug I'm using, actually. 20 oz seems right. I'll go as high as 4-5 spoons of butter and as low as 2, but 3 seems to do the job pretty well.

A blender, hand blender, or strong milk frother is pretty essential or you end up with coffee with an oil slick on top.

You won't get the same effect with mixing. You'll just have a bunch of oil on top of your coffee. Blend it and use a Blendtec or Vita Mix if your in the cool kid blender club like me.
Housertl,
Double whatever your using and see how you go. I do 4 to 6tbsp butter with 2 tbsp MCT in about 16 oz of coffee that I drink over a 1 to 2 hours. I worked myself up to 6 tbsp of butter over a couple weeks to steer clear of any oily explosions.

I'd like to amend a bit of this. After listening to some interviews with Dave A (originator of BPC) it is actually more beneficial to use a French press than a drip pot. Not sure where I had heard the opposite that I stated above. Also Dave stated that a light or medium roast is most beneficial with medium being the proffered roast.
I've had BPC four days of this week and so far the recipe that works best for me is: 2 1/2tbps Kerrygold unsalted butter, 1 heaping tbsp of organic coconut oil, 16oz of water and 55 grams ground coffee. I can usually go around 5 hours on just this without getting hungry and that's a big feat for me.
How's it going for everyone else?
Inner Light
06-07-2013, 12:18 PM
I've been lucky enough to have been introduced to BPC from a buddy of mine. I haven't tried it with anything in it like butter or MCT, but just drinking it black.
I can say that this stuff is the real deal and all the other coffee out there is a joke IMO. Worth every penny!
The reason that you want to use a french press is that drip machines generally drip the water too fast to brew it correctly.
I will also say that the main reason you can go so long feeling energetic and full is because of the unsalted butter. Fats are your bodies preferred source of fuel and will keep you feeling full for hours as it generally takes 3-5 hrs. to be digested.

I worked at Starbucks in mid 2000s but was never a coffee drinker. At all. Kept reading about BPC so decided to give it a go.
Had my very first cup of coffee a couple of weeks ago. Started drinking it black. I am impressed with how good the Upgraded Coffee tastes by itself. My wife, who can't drink coffee without tons of cream & sugar, even commented on how good it is black. But adding the butter & coconut oil (MCT is on the way) takes it to another level.
I went all out & bought a handheld burr grinder & an aeropress.
BPC has taken the place of my morning protein smoothie. Which is great bc the protein lasts me longer now, too.
Highly recommended.

If you get on the Bullet Proof Exec site, he talks quite a bit about fasting until 2:00 PM after drinking bullet proof coffee. He also goes into detail about food choices and when to eat when fasting and how he used the BP coffee and fasting to lose somewhere around 100 lbs.

Ok, I guess I'm gonna be the odd man out. I blended butter and coffee in a Nutri Bullet, it came out frothy with a frothy head. There was a buttery taste at first, but it wasn't as thick as I expected. Not terrible, but not something I would go out of my way to do everyday. I added some unsweetened cocoa and liked that a bit better. Unfortunately, after a while it began to separate and I had the oil-slick on top. At that point I broke down and added some whole milk just because I didn't want to throw it away.

Couple things to think about: if you only used butter with no coconut or MCT oil it might have affected the texture. You also might need more butter.
I'm not trying to bully you into liking it or anything, just some ideas if you want to give it another shot... :D

10-4, I thought about that, both the coconut oil and/or adding more butter. I'll probably try adding more butter first though. I am concerned about the separation though. Someone mentioned sipping on his brew all morning. How much time is everyone getting before the oil separates out?

I'll sometimes drink mine over a couple hours. I'll down one cup within 15 minutes of making it and I'll put the other in an insulated mug with a sealed screw on lid that I take out the door. I just shake the travel mug real good before I drink it. This seems to work pretty well if it was initially mixed well in a high speed blender. I wouldn't just put butter into your travel mug unless you want an oil slick.
I would also add the MCT oil to the mix and make sure to blend it as high as you can for at least 15-30 seconds. Also make sure your blender bottle is warm to start. Do that with some hot water from the sink.
If you're home for a while in the morning you may also do better with a couple small cups made to order.

Finally upped my butter this morning now that I feels stomach has adapted to my new ritual. I'm now using about 3 1/2tbsp and the BPC seems to be even more effective.
Sidenote; for those that arent using the actual "upgraded coffee" from the Bulletproof site the next closest thing is a single origin, medium roast from Central America preferably wet processed. For any coffee snobs out there check out Four Barrel Coffee on San Francisco. Before "upgraded coffee" was introduced, this was apparently the go to guys for connoisseur grade beans that work well into the original intent of BPC.

Yep we have Kroger here and they have it as well. Often tunes it will be in the same area as cooking sprays and vegetable oils. Around here it's about $12 for a jar that should last you a month.

Finally gave this a shot today. I did well for my first attempt: I managed to score unsalted French butter, unsweetened German cocoa powder, and Indian coconut oil. The coffee is obviously the weak link here, but regardless, I am intrigued by the results.

I intend to maintain a very low carb intake for the next 30 days, so I expect that I will have many more opportunities to experiment. Thanks for posting!
Edit: one other thing. That cuppa gave me a shot of clean energy like I haven't had from a regular cup of black coffee in at least ten years. I wasn't expecting that!

Awesome Nate. Keep us updated on how it works for you. I usually take a break from it about one day a week and eat a regular breakfast. Funny thing is I can eat some scrambled eggs and a big bowl of oatmeal and two hours later I'm feeling hungry. With the BPC I don't get hungry for hours lol

Early in the week I decided that today, Saturday, was going to be my no-coffee morning. No real reason; just decided.

If you mean having to bust off the X to make a move to the bathroom than yes. The first time I made this I went too hard too fast with the butter and coconut oil(didn't have MCT yet).
That oil slick went right through me and my stomach hurt too. Take it slow and work up your oil/butter to avoid these sh*t I mean pitfalls.
I just did 6tbsp KGold 4 unsalted/2 salted because I like the taste and 2 tbsp Upgraded MCT this morning and feel great. The coffee helps move the bowels but things are normal and I haven't had any upset stomach feelings for weeks.

I got ahold of some MCT oil a few days ago and have replaced my normal 1 tbsp coconut oil with 1tbsp MCT oil (NOW brand) I'm not enjoying the ye coffee near as much.
The MCT oil is unflavored however it seems to make my coffee "oily" tasting compared to coconut oil. Also it seems to irritate my stomach (busy off the X before even being able to assess the situation!)
I've ready the MCT oil is the optimal choice and also has thermogenic properties but I'll give it a few more days and see how I feel. Looking ahead though I'd say I will be switching back to coconut oil.

If you get an upset stomach (I experienced this the first couple of days) he recommends using digestive enzymes or a Pre/Pro biotic to assist with breaking down the fat.
He and Mark Sisson have both mentioned the Garden of Life Primal Flora and it seemed to get rid of the stomach problems all together for me. YMMV.

Mossy- Organic butter has no benefit if its not grass fed butter. If the cow that produced that butter was fed corn and grains its not going to have the correct balance of Omega 3s to Omega 6s.
Kerry Gold butter from Ireland seems to be the default standard. It can take a few days to a couple of weeks to get to a point of fasting until 2:00. If you can't get there just slowly extend the duration until you can get to 2:00 PM before breaking your fast.

Google the coffee and read the whole scoop on the ingredients. I think that once you understand the concept you'll understand the application.
The creator of the coffee goes into a good deal of detail on why you want to use grass fed butter and high quality coconut oil in addition to high quality coffee. He also recommends MCT oil over coconut oil if possible based upon its purity and concentration.

May check some local liquor/package stores in your area. Often times they have a gourmet/party section with a cooler. A lot of times that cooler contains the "gold" if no luck there any brand of salt free and grass fed butter will work fine. The key is that it is from grass fed cows.

I just throw mine all into a cheap ($15!) plastic blender and run it on low for about 20 seconds and do about a 5 second burst on high and it comes out perfect! I do suggest you "pre-heat" your blender though with a bit of warm water.

I don't worry about it too much. I buy a an organic rainforest something or other from Costco that we like. I've tried his bulletproof beans and can't tell the difference in taste or feel. I can tell the difference in how I react to gas station beans though. Foggy head, dry mouth these are supposedly symptoms from mycotoxins.

Interesting.
Also interesting is that when a new espresso drive-thru opened up near me, I discovered that whatever coffee they are using would trigger a MIGRAINE. I'd always get a half-caff Americano with cream (uh-oh, now the NSA knows my signature beverage :hypnotized:). So I'm not sure if it was the chemicals that were de-caffing the java, or what. In contrast, the gal that owned the place before that really did make the best Americano in town.

So this last week we've had a spell of unseasonably cold weather in Wisconsin. Down to zero at night with below zero wind chills.
I usually work at 11. I've found that if I have a BIG cup of bulletproof coffee (with cocoa powder in it) about 9:30, my fire is lit pretty good until about 4am or so. (If I make bulletproof coffee without the cocoa powder, I also leave the pasture butter from grass fed cows out too)
I've found that the multi-chain triglycerides seeme to have a modest appetite suppression effect on me. Not a big deal, but I can notice it. At least in temperate weather. When it gets bitter cold I get HUNGRY. Gotta' fuel the furnace . . .
I have also experimented with the MCTs in protein shakes and in hot cocoa. MCT is also sold in capsule form.
Yesterday I was in the whirlpool at the gym and got talking to a guy. He told me that in cooler weather he likes to start the day with a big cup of hot cocoa with a big tablespoon of coconut butter (solidified coconut oil) in it. He said he feels energized all morning after that. I've tried it and it's a tasty combination.
I found that the bulletproof coffee recipe didn't really appeal to me until the weather turned cold.

The theory is that medium chain triglycerides are more easily and rapidly digested than other kinds of fats because they require lower amounts of enzymes & bile acids for absorption. MCTs are metabolized very quickly in the liver and if ingestion of MCTs is quickly followed by exercise, the theory is that they are quickly burned. MCTs in the "bulletproof coffee" concoction or added to a protein shake are a meal replacement, ideally before exercise.
In Will Brink's recent book "The Skinny on Diet Supplements: fact vs fiction" he reports that the research on MCTs is inconclusive in regard to health benefits in humans.
I discovered "Bulletproof Coffee" reading a discussion on Warriortalk. Since then I've found several other articles about it on the internet.
The use of the Medium Chain Triglycerides intrigued me, so I have experimented since October.
I normally work the midnight shift. Sometimes I eat something about 0330 or so. I have found that if I take 3 1000mg capsules of MCT oil (from NOW sports) at that time I'm not hungry the rest of my tour and I'm not hungry when I get home.
Also, in general I'm not hungry when I first get up, regardless of what sleep schedule I'm on. I've been having a whey protein shake with a few tablespoons of MCT oil in it when I wake up and it seems to keep me powered up until I feel like eating something.
My own goal of losing 15 lbs & getting in better shape is progressing steadily but slowly. Now that the winter has finally ended I should be able to make more improvement. I prefer hiking outside to doing anything aerobic at the gym (although I don't mind being inside when the weather is bad)

MCT oil is a more concentrated form of some of the beneficial substances found in coconut oil and the MCTs go straight from the gut to the liver and are processed faster.
I often drink a little Brain Octane right out of the bottle. (Only a little. Too much acts like motor flush). It seems to be an appetite suppressant for me. I usually only make official "Bulletproof Coffee" in the fall and winter
