I'm not usually up early enough to have breakfast at the hotel, but my 0800 was canceled and I don't have anything else until noon, so I decided to take advantage of a rare bit of downtime:

Just for fun, I also got a few shots of some of the more interesting sights on the 1/2 km walk from my apartment to the main hotel:

Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

I've spent 8 of the past 18 months here. It is a true 5-star resort, but as I work an 84 hour week, opportunities to enjoy it are rare.

Well , its not Dubai nor Kuwait. Perhaps Bahrain , but probably Doha Quatar!

Close!

Here's a better angle:

Incidentally, that's a Hamann Tycoon EVO X6 (http://www.hamann-motorsport.com/en/tuning-ranges-for/spalte-1/bmw/x6/tycoon-evo-for-bmw-x6-e71), with a 501 HP tuning package (note the quad exhaust) that bumps the top speed up somewhere north of 250 km/h. Truly a one of a kind* toy for the oil billionaire who has everything.

*Alas, one of a kind doesn't mean as much here as it might elsewhere. I've seen 3 of these in the local area: one black, one white, and now one in blue. Personally I think they're ugly, but I am obviously not in the target demographic.

Didn't recognize the plate shape. It used to be square back in the late 1990's. Kind of like we have here.............

They still have the square plates. I'm not sure when they adopted the Euro style, but it seems like most of the newer cars have them.

Been there many times. Didn't recognize the place your at.

I think we had a similar exchange last time I was here. As I recall, you posted a pic of yourself on the Oman border up around Dubai somewhere.

WOW...WAY BETTER than that hole we lived in.

I've lived in condemned buildings, barracks, dorms, tents, and trailers all over the world, but this is my first 5-star hotel.

Though not quite 5-star, the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at the Danat International Resort's Arabesque Restaurnat in Al Ain (a convenient hop and a skip from the villa I used to live in) is pretty good too.
