Well boys for my honeymoon the Mrs and I ended up in Maui. We have been enjoying ourselves but I was wondering where someone could recommend a good place to get some Kona for our family back home. Any recommendations?

Hmmmm. Well, they call it "Kona" for a reason. You'll find several coffee plantations on the Big Isalnd, and many of them offer tours. You can walk through the entire process of cultivating coffee--from the vine to the cherry, to peeling the parchment and drying the beans for roasting. But I'm not sure that any of that exists on Maui. If you do decide to head over to the Big Island, then I give my vote to Greenwell Farms. Otherwise, just roll on down the road to Hana and stop somewhere along the way for a cup of joe. No matter what you are drinking, it tastes better with your toes tucked into the sand, watching the sunset.

You can get Kona in Maui at abunch of places. Even their Safeway has packages of it. Also, get 100% Kona as the blend Kona really doesn't do it justice. Even the coffee at McDonalds gave a pleasant surprise along with the local breakfast platter. Stay away from Hilo Hattie as they will price gouge you. Just visited there in December for our 10 year anniversary. Road to Hana was great as ever, the winery, snorkeling, sunrise or sunset on Haleakala are just a few of the outstanding items on our lists. Had a John Chamber's special (home-made sheath with kitchen knife) on me when we renewed our vows. We just shipped ours back home or had a extra luggage bag and loaded it up. Congrats !

Make sure you get the fresh-roasted beans instead of already ground. Some places will fresh-roast your beans on order to help the freshness stay longer. I am not a coffee drinker at all, but I had some samples of the medium roast with just a tad bit of sugar and it was good. I brought some back from a little store called Keokis on the Big Island(they have good donkey balls as well...) and they fresh-roasted it for me. The people I gave it to loved it. If you don't care about money much, get the peaberry beans. Kona coffee is merely Arabica beans but the climate of Kona makes it special.
As already stated, make sure it isn't a Kona blend which is common. There is also another up and coming coffee area on the SE side of the big island (Kau)that is supposed to be very good as well. Mountain Thunder is another well-respected coffee producer.
The wife and I were on the Big Island in February and we are contemplating buying a small kona coffee farm. Hopefully we will make it happen.

Try any store...it is very much available everywhere...and excellent. BTW, there are two places you must try: Pacifico's and Leilani's.

My wife is a coffee drinker, me not so much, and she loves Kona. Locally shes gets it at the Cost plus world market. If you have one near you I'd try there.

All good recommendations so far. Whatever you do, make sure you visit Mama's Fish House!

Great suggestions guys, keep them coming. We went on a walk and found Leilani's. Looks pretty cool. Which would be a must, Mamas fish house or Leilani's? They both look excellent.

If you get to Hana make the full loop by coming back the other way. We did it in a Subaru, but most any kind of car can do it now days. We had a storm the day before and I rolled up my window to keep the waves out! Well not quite that close, but I wondered for a minute if I was going to get wet with the waves pounding on the cliff I was driving on.
As far as coffee it was in many if not most stores and I think even some of the road side fruit/veggie stands had it as well.
Have fun!! We spent part of last winter there and miss it even though the weather is getting pretty nice in the mountains now.

Another vote for Duke's on both Oahu and Maui. Amazing salad bar and great Kona Coffee. On our first trip to the islands in the 1990's we ended up flying all night due to a flight delay and arriving in Honolulu about 0800 hrs local time. My wife and I had been up for 30 hours and asked the hotel concierge where we could get a good breakfast and some Kona coffee. She recommended Dukes which was right on the beach about four hotels down. We ended up eating breakfast there every morning for five days. Can't say enough positive things about it.

With gravy?
Just funnin' ya!!
Now you've made me hungry! I'll just have to settle for a fresh cup of home ground.
Enjoy!

For a really nice romantic evening, go to the Plantation House in Kaanapali. Bring your gold card though. If you want moderately priced amazing food, check out the Kahana Grill. Make sure Chef Alex is still there. He used to be the chef at the Plantation House. Great food but more reasonably priced.
I really miss the islands. Spent my honeymoon on Maui and Kauai.

That certainly is Loco Moco, most often served with "hambuger steak." If you are touring the islands you will be doing yourself a disservice if you don't stop for some Huli Huli chicken. It is rotesserie style chicken with the locally grown Kiava (sp?) wood, absolutely fantastic!
As for Kona coffee, well even the stuff in the stores (Lion brand, etc) will be better than what you can get stateside; though you can find most of it at places like Whole Foods.

If it is loco moco, where is the gravy???
I favored the Portugese sausage and papaya for breakfast while I was there.

Wow, wow again. Took the wife out to Dukes for dinner (we enjoyed breakfast so much we figured dinner would be equally good) and had a fabulous meal. Boy oh boy we are missing out on good food up in Spokane.

So last night we made it into Leilani's. a excellant meal. I might have to give the edge to dukes, but both were really good. I tried a steak and the wife had a surf and turf. Good food. I may have to say that the Wolfs Lodge in Idaho does a better steak so plus one for Idaho. Went to Dukes for breakfast again this morning, we were blown away again. Thanks to all for the exelallant suggestions and anyone traveling to Maui should defiantly hit up these places.
