Well, I hate wine, I already make my own Ginger Beer, so how about Rum. I'm not looking to get stoned here, just something to enjoy in a respectable way. Anyone a fan of this drink or have recs for certain ones to try?

I like white rum but IMO rum is a mixed drink kinda thing. I was told that drinking white rum straight up is actually considered bad for you.

Appletons or Wray & Nephew are two good brands that I have had.

For white Rum, Don Q from Puerto Rico. Yeah yeah I know that Bacardi is supposed to be the "premium brand", but trust me, nothing mixes better than Don Q. Mojitos, Cuba Libre, Screwdrivers, Piņa Colada, etc., Don Q will raise the level of quality in any rum based drink.

As for dark or spiced rum, I enjoy Zacappa from Guatemala. The Bacardi Oakheart is also a good choice.

Keep calm and return fire...

Pusser's Rum has quite a unique taste. I think that's what the British navy had for their rations.

Other good ones are Mount Gay Eclipse (Barbados) and Myers's Dark (Jamaica). +1 for Sailor Jerry.

There's another decent white rum distilled out of Austin, TX, but the name escapes me.

Flor De Cana 18 and Ron Zacapa 24. Both are superb in a snifter with a fine cigar. Not for mixed drinks, way too nice for that purpose.

Those are two fine choices and, as John says, are NOT for mixing! I would add to the list El Dorado 15 yr or older, Appleton 12 yr or older and Santa Theresa 1796. A rum list would not be complete without mentioning Mount Gay XO of course. Enjoy!!!

On this last Thanksgiving morning I was playing chef--masterminding the big feast for a whole bunch of people. I had big plans but I was seriously stressed out about it--scheduling everything out so that it all hit the table at the right time was a tall order. One of the first orders of business was the scratch made cranberry sauce that had to get cooked & chilled. Cranberries, orange juice, cinnamon, brown sugar, salt and a healthy shot of white rum went into the pan. And then a shot of white rum went into a shot glass. Followed quickly by a second. There may or may not have been a third. The remaining preparations and subsequent feast went off famously. A good time had by all--'specially me.

I would say that straight white rum was damned good for me that day. :finger:

Not a rum expert by any means but for mixing The Kraken seems to do the trick; it is dark and strong, but it was their cool marketing campaign that made me buy.

El Dorado from Guyana. The only, and I do mean ONLY good thing about the place. The 12 year old is excellent, the 15 better for not much more cash. Vintages up to 30 years.

For mixing, I definitely lean toward Appleton Estate Reserve, Pusser's and/or Mt Gay. Appleton Reserve is my favorite for mixes and occasionally for sipping.

For sipping Flor de Cana 18 is hard to beat. Keep it chilled and add twist of lime for a little acid. Mmmmmm! Do NOT adulterate this nectar with any mix.

As an aside, if you can get Bundaberg, try it. Bundy Special Editions & 10 yr are quite good and PETA hates them for their ad campaigns. 'Nuff for me!

^^^ Listen to this guy!

For mixer, if you prefer molasses flavors, Myers Dark's a good bet. Prefer vanillas? Captain Morgan Black makes a great rum and coke.

I have dabble in many of Rums, hands down for me is Kilo Kai. Its a product of Curacao. It's spiced amber Rum and may possibly be one of the finest tasting spirits to ever grace my palate regardless of it's type/class. Not really too hard to find just often over looked. Roughly $20 a bottle. Drinkable straight, rocks, or mixed. Many people I have bought bottles for come to the same conclusion.

I drink little rum, I cook with Appleton Estates Dark Rum, and make Pina Coladas with Bacardi light.

Will definitely give those a try. Sailor Jerry looks pretty good too, looks like I have a good shopping list to start with.

Editted to add:

For you Whiskey fans....IMHO, lot of the Martiniques taste nasty but the British Navy is smooth.

Whichever rum you drink, I suggest reading "A Rifleman Went to War" by Herbert McBride. An American who fought in the Canadian army in WWI, it contains a great explanation and defense of the British "rum ration" tradition.
