Here's some fascinating history:
Smuggler Nation: How Illicit Trade Made America (http://www.amazon.com/Smuggler-Nation-Illicit-Trade-America/dp/0199746885/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2JSK52VMJWU0G&coliid=I3KIIZFXW45HRU)

America is a smuggler nation. Our long history of illicit imports has ranged from West Indies molasses and Dutch gunpowder in the 18th century, to British industrial technologies and African slaves in the 19th century, to French condoms and Canadian booze in the early 20th century, to Mexican workers and Colombian cocaine in the modern era. Contraband capitalism, it turns out, has been an integral part of American capitalism.

Given current events, studying this side of history might serve as inspiration for new business ventures. While many WT'ers would have moral compunctions with muling a bunch of weed for MS13, I'm betting many would have no such qualms with sneaking a crate full of PMags and Glocks over the beach into Connecticut on a dark and stormy night....

And even better...my family has a history of "black marketeering". Nonetheless...OPSEC will prevail. It would not be the beach nor would we use a stormy night as cover. Good heavens man...it is 2013...there are better ways.

That's my romantic streak showing.... and the Navy upbringing. Why go by land or air when there's a perfectly good coastline beckoning? But agreed, it is 2013...

Related - the Navy's PT boat designs in WWII were an outgrowth of rumrunner boats built during Prohibition, just as NASCAR's roots lie in souped-up bootlegger cars.

The book is mentioned prominently in the current issue of Foreign Affairs Magazine.
