View Full Version : How to Find Investors?

Several years of business planning with a friend is finally coming to fruition. We have plans, property we want, and the knowledge to make it work. We just need investors. We have one main investor (who makes money from opening up businesses like the one we want to open) who will provide most of the help and funding, but they want other investors before they committ. I've personally exhausted family and friends.
For those who have done this before, how does one go about finding investors? Any help is appreciated. PM me if you have info you don't want others to see.

Look for various venture capital companies. Most would only invest in an industry that they are familiar and comfortable with.
Another issue is relationships. You have to bring credibility that you can do what you say you can do. It is best to have a mutual acquaintance to make the introductions.
Where can you find them? Trade show or personal financial advisors.

Take a gander at www.kickstarter.com.

Thanks BG. I know one or two financial advisors. I'll talk to them. I'm skeptical of kickstarters ability to actually work...

Are you friends with a cpa or a partner at an accounting firm? If you don't have one yet put a business plan together and meet with your cpa. Often they have clients who come to them for investment opportunities.

I helped finance a movie on Kickstarter. Only a $12,000 budget. It is now being distributed in Walmart, RedBox, and Netflix, with the sequel starting to be filmed next month with a much bigger budget.
There has been a few success stories on Kickstarter.
Even the best of ideas may be hard to get funding.
Is it a new product or Invention?

Very good point. We fell outside of parameters on a commercial lease because we were a startup on a shoestring. We handed them a business plan that changed their minds. They made the exception based on the thought and effort we put into the plan.

No, it's a brick and mortar business, but one that is lacking in my area, and fits in with the liberals' plans for expansion of my town (if you can't beat em, make some money).

Yeah, the CPA friends would be the way to go.

It works really well with narrowly defined products, especially if you have a defined market that you can get hte word out to.
Historically your best bet for this kind of funding was a business loan. You might take a pass at the Small Business Administration website and see if their loans meet your needs and desires.
I hear that banks aren't loaning money to businesses right now, which is f*d, but that's the game.
Good luck.
