View Full Version : Coming Soon: The Gang Unit

Gabriel Suarez

When I worked the Gang Unit, I carried different blades. A Gang Cop carrying blades? Yes. Think of going into a room with twenty thugs that want to kill you...you'd carry things too. Even in the jail. You were supposed to check all the weapons before coming in, but you didn't. You always kept something. Sure it was against the rules...but the rules were never made to keep you alive.

The Gang Unit is a knife designed for use with the prison knife killing system often used by those we hunted back in the day. It is neither elegant nor technical. It is violent and ugly and brutal. Yet that system - using sharpened spoons and shards of glass as killed more men in cell blocks, alleys, and bars, in personal combat than most other "modern" knife systems.

Like the system that spawned it, the Gang Unit is the most sinister purpose-driven knife of our times. Stay tuned boys and girls...the Gang Unit is coming..............

This a prototype we beat the hell out of. It is a short little gut stabber. Notice the egg shaped handle. It is designed to fit the hand in a number of different ways. Think of a punch dagger that is not really a punch dagger. Polymer, hard etched scales, and with a kydex sheath that can be carried in any number of ways.

That looks very interesting. I have been carrying an older Meyerco fixed warncliffe blade knife in my off-hand, left front pocket paired with a Yojimbo II in my right front pocket. That looks like just the thing to upgrade my Meyerco. Between the Meyerco, a pair of Yojimbo II knives, a SOG Swedge and my GNS, I am sold on the blade design.

Hmmm. Interesting. When I first looked at it, I wasn't that excited. But the idea is growing on me. I've got a Hideaway Knife that I really like....in summer. Because it is sized to your fingers, and I wear gloves half of the year, it is useless in winter. The key to this one will be the size of the grip. If it is too fat, it won't hide as well and will be awkward to carry/conceal. If it was as thin as a normal knife, it wouldn't allow enough surface area for a solid grip. You've got to get that grip sized just right. In fact, it might make sense to offer different grip sizes. We usually see knives of various blade lengths mated to the same grip. Here, it would make more sense to have a single blade size offered with small, medium and large grips. I think I'll be getting one to try out.

The knives have been dehorned to feel comfy in the hand. They are scary sharp...and as you will notice, totally clean of markings. They are as easy to "disinfect" of blood borne pathogens as all our knives (a little dip in hidrogen peroxide after diassembly), and purpose designed for, well....you can guess.
