Does anyone have any input on Dauphin Island??
We rented a beach house there for after Christmas, and was just wondering about the must's, must never's and must not miss in the area. Don't mind day trips. Hopefully Mobile Bay centered excursions.
We explored the area 20 some years ago but would like some insider input, should any be available.

We spent a week on Dauphin island in the autumn of 2010 and it's gorgeous. We were in the off season, so the crowds were much better than in the summertime. The historic fort is a great afternoon stroll, and the aquarium is interesting if you're into natural history.

I've got a home there and love it. On the island itself, check out ft Gains and the Esturarium. Then take the ferry over to Ft Morgan for a lil more civil war history. Enjoy the beaches either on the island or Gulf Shores. Gulf Shores place to eat is Lulus ( Jimmy Buffets Sister).
Just South of Gulf Shores is Foley with a great outlet Center for shopping and Lamberts Cafe, (home of the thrown rolls). If you have kids with you, Lamberts is a must.
And as Dr. Meade said, great food on the causeway and should miss the USS Alabama.
A lot to do, Just whatever your interest is.

My wife and I stayed near Gulf Shores/Ft. Morgan last year and had a great time there. My wife is a Physician Recruiter and was recruiting for the state of AL at the time, so we tacked a few days on at the end of her recruiting trip as we were in Mobile/Fairhope area.
We rented a wave runner for an hour, and spent almost the entire hour within touching distance of a group of dolphins. They played with us almost the entire time, and it was wonderful. Better than any dolphin cruise I went on.
Lulu's is great, we made a stop there too. Orange Beach has several pretty decent restaurants too.
